Contending Conservatives the right way...

Written by: Jim Nichols on Apr 22, 2008 7:22 AM EDT

In my recent post DFA Training Works I said something that still sits with me as not quite accurate and fair.

Conservatives don’t care if the lady down the street has health care or not. Conservatives don’t care if our economy doesn’t work for working people. Conservatives want us to stay demoralized, sitting all alone in our houses, angry at the world. Conservatives want to tell people it’s a dog eat dog world, that people can’t trust the government. Every time we show up we challenge those conceptions to the very core of its vacuousness.

I can't really decide if I said it wrong, should have used other words, or kept it out all together. I know a number of Conservatives who do care about health care, about poverty, about all the things I speak about. They just disagree with me on the methods and approaches. I feel that they haven't looked very closely at the evidence and policy ideas surrounding those issues. And I feel they do not put up a great deal of effort in responding to my questions and challenges, aside from putting trust in Conservative leaders on TV and the radio.

I am quite often feel angry at the lack of personal effort to back up ideas they passionately hold; past the creative talking points coming out of the media. But still I do meet conservatives who do care. I know they care because I see them worry how they are going to pay their bills, afford health care, save for retirement. And it probably offends them when I go strutting around my Liberal Friends saying they don't.

This morning on my walk, with the dog wandering back and forth and the moon hanging just above the trees I was thinking about something I saw at the King Center yesterday.

It was a quote from one of the video's on the civil rights protesters rules of behavior. It said you must always be respectful, stay calm, look forward, do not respond, do as directed by the group leader. He then went on to say the reason... "we aren't fighting our neighbors... we're fighting for equal rights..."

That kept sticking with me all day yesterday and this morning. As Chairman of the Henry County Democrats I have to focus a lot of economic and social frustration. I know personally as a human rights activist it is mind-boggling that my country and my president is now the focus of much of my human rights focus. It is almost unreal. So many times people want to vent... I do it myself.

The question is what are we fighting for?

I'm fighting for everyone in this country to have health care. I'm fighting for decent wages, education, and opportunity for all Americans. I'm not fighting my neighbor. And it would be wise on my part not to waste time using words and condescending phrases that might not allow them to hear the issues, statistics, and arguments I use to address and change those problems.

I think if I could go back I might say something to the effect of: Conservatives put a higher priority on personal choices than on making sure we all have health care. Personally I'm will to sacrifice a little so that others won't have to suffer. Conservatives put a greater value on personal wealth, and personal hard work paying off, over the strength and welfare of our economy as a whole. They see us as individuals, Liberals see us a complex social group.

That might help me not make it "me against my neighbor" and turn it into "me advocating for my neighbor. All of them to be exact."

So was it ever determined that the Hillary video about Bruce Springsteen was legit?

If it is, I wonder if they took into consideration that his longtime friend and fellow member of the E Street Band (Danny Federici, who actually invited Bruce to be in HIS band) just died and he is in mourning?

Shoppers pick Obama: Clinton 'vote tote' suffers price chop  Sales of Freddy & Ma's Hillary Clinton-themed vote tote started strong, but Barack Obama's the one with the momentum.By Julie FreeseLast Updated: April 22, 2008: 12:21

(FORTUNE Small Business) -- Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will duke it out in the Pennsylvania primary on Tuesday - and if sales of Amy and Anthony Pigliacampo's eco-friendly "vote totes" are any indicator, Obama is in the lead.

In October, the Pigliacampos - siblings and founders of custom-bag brand Freddy & Ma - released a series of canvas bags emblazoned with "Obama," "Hillary," "Democrat," "Republican," or "Independent," offering them for sale online and at Urban Outfitters (URBN). Hillary was the early favorite. But shortly after the new year, the Pigliacampos had to mark down her tote from $25 to $10.

"Almost 90% of the Hillary totes ordered were sold before Christmas," says Anthony, 28. "Then sales plummeted. It was the opposite with Obama. Initially sales were slow, but they gained momentum."

(The Hill) Frank sides with CBC, holds fast on Cherokee funding

By Kevin Bogardus
Posted: 04/21/08

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) has threatened to block housing legislation for Native Americans if the final bill does not include a funding ban against the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma .

Frank shares a concern first raised by the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), whose members have proposed several measures to punish the tribe for changing its constitution last year to exclude the Freedmen — a group of largely black Americans who are descendants of freed slaves once owned by tribe members — from its ranks.

The tribe’s actions have led to an intense fight between the Cherokee Nation and the CBC. The tribe has hired a number of lobbyists to push back against punitive legislation as it also battles the issue in federal and tribal court. The powerful House Financial Services Committee chairman is yet another obstacle for the Cherokee.

“We would not pass the bill. We would not acquiesce to give funding to the Cherokees,” said Frank, whose committee has jurisdiction over the legislation. Frank said he would not bring a conference report to the floor for a final vote without the ban firmly in place. ... full article: http://thehill.com/business--lobby/frank...

'Most racist' article attacked Native peoples in Paraguay

by: Rick Kearns / Indian Country Today
April 21, 200

ASUNCION, Paraguay - The Most Racist Article of the Year Award for 2007, given by the human rights organization Survival International, goes to a Paraguayan newspaper that published an editorial describing Native people as ''a cancer'' and as having ''filthy habits.'' Indigenous advocates also point to economic aspects and severe oppression as being parts of the reason for the media attack.

SI's award is a new feature of its ''Stamp it Out'' campaign, which aims to challenge racist depictions of tribal people in the world's media. The winner, La Nacion of Asuncion, received a certificate March 21, inscribed with a quotation from Lakota Sioux author Luther Standing Bear: ''All the years of calling the Indian a savage has never made him one.''

Indigenous advocates from Paraguay are asserting, however, that the reasons behind the tirade are also economic, noting that the editorial writer is a hotel owner who claimed that the Native peoples were scaring away customers.

The targets of the article's vitriol are mainly Ava Guarani people who ended up living in a public park in the capital city of Asuncion for nine months, between January and September of last year. According to activists and attorneys involved in the issue, this group of families and others were supposed to be able to move into territory purchased for them - after their ancestors were forced off much of the same land - but problems have arisen in finishing the purchase arrangement.

These details did not appear in the editorial, titled ''Indians in Uruguay Square,'' published in La Nacion Sept. 13, 2007.

''A Neolithic Indian camp right in the city center is unthinkable, but there it is, like a dangerous cancer, spreading bad smells, destruction and contamination,'' wrote Osvaldo Dominguez Dibb, author of the editorial and owner of La Nacion and the new Crowne Plaza Hotel in Asuncion. ''The city's being punished for no reason, and it shouldn't have to pay for it. The Indians have to learn to live like people, or get back to the jungle.''

Dominguez Dibb did not respond to requests for comment about the award or the issues facing indigenous people in Paraguay. The editorial writer is the owner of the newspaper and the principal shareholder of Karmar, S.A., which purchased the Crowne Plaza Asuncion. This same hotel is near the park mentioned in the article. What is not mentioned in the article, according to the indigenous advocates, is that Native people in Paraguay have been violently oppressed for many years and that this latest situation is another reflection of those discriminatory conditions. ...full article: http://www.indiancountry.com/content.cfm...

couldn't have that in a President could we? lol .  a President who appeals to people who think? the shame

Phil, a lot of people who can think are supporting HC and I've heard them say that she's the one who can beat McC, which may or may not be true.  Isn't it rather condescending to infer that Clinton supporters are *less than or *inferior to* BO supporters?  I personally think that supporters of both cands are being misled and that I say that becuz of their war stance...HC's latest war comments and BO wanting to "end the war in Afghan" and "going into sovereign Iran w/o invitation."  Too me, these are very serious issues and no thinking person who wants peace could possibly vote enthusiastically for these two.

Do we want peace or not?   We'll not get it with these two, unless one or both is fibbing a bit to get the war-mongering testosterone or frightened of terrorists votes. The dem party is now the other war party.

Did any of these kids who may not yet be able to vote attend the BO rallies?  If so, do they know the issues?  Anybody can attend rallies.  Same goes for HC rallies.

*******************************

breaking - msnbc currently reporting problems w/voting machines in Philly -  they're breaking down and not working in African Amreican communities.  more to come....  it's gonna be a long day!

If the machines were breaking down in HC country, would you all be blaming HC?  I don't hear a peep about this since it's BO *territory.*

***********************

Carter - the same man who was vilified in our press? (the disgraceful CM)

*******************************

Rice - Americans love her and she has high ratings, last I heard.  She could be on the ticket.  How smart are Americans to not know what a disaster she is?

*************************

When there was the outcry that Obama would meet with any leader around the world, the complaint against him was from that old paradigm of" enemies and friends and superiorty and carrots and sticks".  That's the kind of "old f**t thinking" I was referring to.

I'm an older wiser woman and I always liked to hear BO say he'd meet with *enemies.*  He changed his tune and now said that he'd not meet with Hamas.  Big big huge mistake.  He was for reaching out before he was against it.

No perfect candidate.  But if he's the nominee, he gets my vote in the gen'l.  Same goes for Clinton.  McC must be stopped.

Denise - that is so cool about Julie Nixon Eisenhower. She and David (for whom Camp David is named) are in possession of a pen or one of the pens that the Germans used to sign their surrender at the end of WWII. They showed it on the CSPAN Ike library show. For some reason I am in awe of that pen - that it is not in a museum I guess. Did I tell you guys about the TV miniseries Dresden? I'm anticipating Episode II in the mail from Netflix today. It's riveting.

Joan - I signed the petition for secure votin.

U.S. war costs could be under $170 billion: Pentagon
Tue Apr 22, 2008 12:49pm EDT
By Andrea Shalal-Esa

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon's budget chief on Tuesday said she expects the total cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in fiscal 2009 to be less than the $170 billion estimate given earlier this year by Defense Secretary Robert Gates when pressed by U.S. lawmakers.

"I expect it to be less," Pentagon Comptroller Tina Jonas told Reuters after a speech to a conference sponsored by Jane's Information Group.

Jonas said she would meet with Gates later on Tuesday to discuss whether to give lawmakers a total estimate for war spending needs. The Bush administration has already requested $70 billion in war funds for the fiscal year starting October 1, and says it will need more.

Asked about the prospect that Congress might combine fiscal 2008 and 2009 war spending, Jonas told the conference she was confident that lawmakers would "come to some accommodation."

The United States of Stupidity  We, the people, didn't used to be this dumb
Thursday, April 24, 2008
By Alan Bisbort ...And my flag lapel pin ... honey, have you seen my flag lapel pin?! I can't go out in public without the flag lapel pin! That's like streaking! ...

ABC News hosted the final debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama last Wednesday night. And so, with trepidation, I switched it on. Unlike sports events, one can't mute the volume for a debate. You actually have to listen. And what a mighty crock of stupid it was, forever curing me of watching anything produced by a network news organization.

Two things occurred to me while I watched Gibson and Stephanopoulos assault and batter Obama. 1) Why don't the networks just come out and say it straight up: They don't want a black man in the White House. 2). Obama needs to be better prepared to deflect the stupidity in future debates with McCain. If anything, Obama has erred on the side of hope. He actually thinks he will be asked intelligent questions.

Hope is nice, of course, but a good left jab and a couple of well-aimed rights into the soft white underbelly would work wonders. When Obama stands up and says, "I will not play dumb any longer," he may just prove to be an agent of change. For all of us. ¦

He changed his tune and now said that he'd not meet with Hamas.  Big big huge mistake.  He was for reaching out before he was against it.

Obama was always referring to the leaders of other countries, not terrorist organizations. He was right to say he wouldn't meet with Hamas.

Carter on the other hand is in a different category than POTUS. As a private citizen and former prez, he can negotiate with whoever he wants as long as it doesn't put the U.S. in a difficult situation. He can be effective where the president could not.

 Isn't it rather condescending to infer that Clinton supporters are *less than or *inferior to* BO

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the press does it all the time when referring to Clinton supporters who have less of an education seashell
I was mocking the idea that there was something somehow wrong with an education; and that idea is getting this country into deep trouble with our competitiveness with the rest of the world's economy.
Clinton supporters are of two kinds they like her or they don't like him, and come in all shapes and sizes and degrees or lack thereof, but woe to the country that is against someone because he appeals to "educated" people.
WASHINGTON -- Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton said today that a win in the Pennsylvania primary -- no matter how narrow the margin -- will be all she needs to claim victory.
"I don't think the margin matters" in today's vote, she said on NBC's "Today Show." "A win is a win."
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-campaign23apr23,0,3084943.story
Evidently HRC does not understand even to this day how a Democratic primary works.
It's the delegates, stupid! Nobody "wins" a primary either, they just split the prize accordingly.
She wants to run our country by making her own rules. We already have a prez right now that does that and he's the worst prez this country has ever had.
I was talking about the cost of a tank of fuel with the young truck driver delivering feed today, would fit the Clinton demograhic, and he said "It's all Bush's fault."
my answer "I actually think it is more Cheney, since he is running things, and has closer ties to big oil, but the voters who thought they could elect two oil men and not have fuel prices go up share some of the blame.", he rolled down the window a bit more so he could spit out his chew, and said (after a moment of silence that might of reflected that I had hit a bit too near to home) "It's got to change."
my milk hauler volunteered that he thinks Bush the worst ever but "doesn't know if the country is ready for some colored guy, but after this might be"
both these guys are deer hunter, NASCAR fans, regular middle america, and will vote for Obama
Race was brought up at the hay sale by a Hillary supporter who volunteered Obama "looked like he had the nomination", but then said "10% of American's won't vote for a black man", to which I said, "but aren't 90% of them already Republicans?" and he said "at least".
without the PA primary going on these guys would be thinking about when the river was going down enough to fish or where to find morels
on to Kentucky and Oregon ... the country is getting ready for an historic election
Tell me how Hillary Clinton is different from John McCain?  The rhetoric changes all the time, so I suggest we look at the actions, the alliances, the supporters.  Both are authoritarians, both supported the war, both offer aggressive foreign postures; both use tactics that demean Barack Obama, both are part of the military/industrial/ government complex and will not be willing or able to change that, and Hillary has now promised a prominent role for McCain should she be elected president.
What are we missing here?
And no, Hillary Clinton will not have my vote.  I won't vote for someone I do not respect, trust, see no evidence of an ability  to lead.  She, through her tactics, authoritarian, secretive, and punishing, set universal health care back 16 years.  Do we have any evidence at all that she has changed her thinking, her tactics?  Do you really believe this individual can bring people together, sit them all on one side of the table and the problem on the other side?  And isn't it hubris that Bill and HIllary would want 8 more years in the White House when the Constitution limited the presidency to 8 years? And do we really think Bill Clinton wouldn't make this a co-presidency?  And what did the Clintons really do for this country?
And frankly, I do question the thinking of people who support Hillary Clinton.  The problems have changed, are complex, interrelated, multicultural. Do they really think the old methods of the Clintons can hope to solve them?  Barack Obama has shown he can think circles around her.  I'm not sure how really intelligent she is.  She's certainly capable of memorizing facts, harangueing, taunting, repeating sound bytes, but can she lead?  Can she persuade? Can she show by example that she is ethical, principled, compassionate, knowledgeable about the diversity of the world?
Think what the Clintons did to Al Gore.  They ignored his most passionate and commited focus until the end of the last term, then hastily declared some monuments, and because of their behavior in the White House made Gore's re-election problematical at best.  Is this the kind of character, friendship, loyalty, and commitment you want to put back in the White House?
