Progressive Values Stories: Patricia Player on Security

America's health care system is neither healthy, caring, nor a system.  Walter Cronkite

Patricia Player volunteers for  OneCareNow.org, the California single payer health insurance initiative.   I interviewed her at a street fair in El Cerrito, California where she was staffing the One Care Now booth. She didn't identify as being progressive because she doesn't like labels. She did talk about the value and importance of security and from her talk, I realized the relationship between security and caring. When people don't have health care and are feeling anxious and insecure, it causes them to become more concerned about themselves. When they feel secure, knowing they don't have to worry about having health care, it's easier for them to care about others. If progressives want to create a caring society, we need Single Payer Health Care.

Progressive Values Stories: Patricia Player on Security

National security is the fig leaf against freedom of information.
Ralph Nader

I am Patricia Player, and I’m a retired teacher here in West Contra Costa.  I have been living for almost 70 years in this area.  When I was asked about progressive values, it sort of hit me wrong, because I like to think of values being believing strongly, and going to work for it, live by and practice.  So therefore I’d like to just talk about values and leave off all the labels.

I think a value is that people feel secure – a security in being able not to have to worry if they have to going to a doctor, whether they can have vision care – all of those things, that they have somebody they know is going to be there for them.  And that it isn’t going to take so much of their individual resources away to provide that.  And they don’t’ have to go without eating or go without enjoying life.

Edwin:  Is that a value of yours, security?

Yes.  Security.  And also feeling confident that you can handle whatever comes up to you.  That’s a real value, and I think having good health care certainly helps people feel more confident in their life.  I just feel it’s important they feel they’re going to make it, whatever comes up.  They want to get up each day and participate.

Another value I have is I really think people have to give back in their community, and provide volunteer service.  Once you feel confident, have good emotional, physically security, you have the time and effort to give back to the community.  I think it’s important to do that.

Edwin:  Generosity?

Right, right.  I think so.  And I think it’s a matter of feeling that you have something to offer, and I think you’re more likely to find that if you have the confidence and security about the basic necessities – shelter, food, health care.   That kind of thing.

JOAN:  It sounds like you’re not just worried about yourself, but about community.

Answer:    And I think that personally, I can’t be secure in this community unless I feel that everybody has their needs filled.  That’s really true, and one of the big things is of course, not only having a place to stay, and to have necessary nutrition, but good health care, and it’s got to be preventative care.  It can’t be just when you get sick.  You have to be taken care of all of the time.

You know what?  I’ve been really blessed.  Because I was born to a couple that had just graduated from University of California and just settled down in Red Bluff, CA.  My dad at the end of the depression in 1938, he was a great salesman and during the war years he was able to work, and so we always had enough to eat.  My mother was a full-time housewife even though she was a university graduate, and I had a very secure home financially.  But my mother developed an aneurism in 1941, right after the birth of my sister, so for 3 years she was at UC Med recovering from that.  So we didn’t have the security of having, not being free from health care.  I think that makes a difference – even though my dad provided that care for us, he was fortunate that UC Berkeley wanted to provide all that care for free, because they were experimenting on how to handle aneurysms in the brain.  So she recovered from that, but I’m very aware of the fact that it’s important to have good health care, and a young couple would never have recovered if they had had to pay for that health care and not been provided by the university.

More about Security

Wikipedia
Security
is the condition of being protected against danger or loss. In the general sense, security is a concept similar to safety. The nuance between the two is an added emphasis on being protected from dangers that originate from outside. Individuals or actions that encroach upon the condition of protection are responsible for the breach of security......
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security

Definition of Security:

- freedom from anxiety or fear;
- the state of being free from danger or injury;
- defense against financial failure; financial independence;
- a guarantee that an obligation will be met;
- measures taken as a precaution against theft or espionage or sabotage etc.;
- Freedom from apprehension, anxiety, or care; confidence of power or safety; hence, assurance; certainty.

Some Questions To Ponder:

- Help get the word out about progressive values by sending any stories, links, ideas and resources that relate to progressive values to me.

 - If Caring is a progressive value, what is the contrasting conservative value?

Some of Jeanne Cummings analysis for Politco regarding the surge of Democratic voter registration in Pennsylvania and how the trend may affect Tuesday's results:

"An historic spike in Democratic voter registrations in Pennsylvania could help Barack Obama cut into Hillary Clinton’s vote in Tuesday’s primary, robbing her of the big victory margin she needs to justify continuing the primary fight.

" , , , , ,

"A county-by-county analysis by Politico suggests that the hard-fought primary between Obama and Clinton has accelerated an ongoing partisan shift in Pennsylvania that could soon move it out of the battleground presidential states and ripple across congressional races this fall, as well.

" . . . .

"According to the Secretary of State’s office, since January about 217,000 new voters have registered for the April 22 primary, the vast majority of whom signed up as Democrats.

"In Philadelphia, by far the state’s largest city, more than 12,000 new Democrats were added to the rolls in the final week before the March registration deadline, compared to just 509 Republicans.

"That statewide Democratic surge has been accompanied by a flood of party-switching. More than 178,000 voters have changed their party status since January — and the Democrats have captured 92 percent of those voters.

"In Delaware County, a Philadelphia suburb once home to a storied Republican machine, nearly 14,000 voters have switched their party affiliation to Democratic since January compared to just 768 who became Republicans.

" . . . .

"A poll of those switchers and new registrants released by [Terry Madonna, a political scientist and director of the Franklin & Marshall College Poll] last week found that Obama was the preferred candidate for 62 percent of them. Clinton insiders said they are also bracing for the same 60-40 split among newly registered Democrats.

"Depending on turnout, Madonna said, those newcomers could help Obama cut a Clinton victory margin by 2 to 3 percentage points and keep her below a double-digit win that would breath new life into the hard-fought race.

“'It’s another important factor working in his favor,' Madonna said."

My Vote's for Obama (if I could vote) ...by Michael Moore

Friends,

I don't get to vote for President this primary season. I live in Michigan. The party leaders (both here and in D.C.) couldn't get their act together, and thus our votes will not be counted.

So, if you live in Pennsylvania, can you do me a favor? Will you please cast my vote -- and yours -- on Tuesday for Senator Barack Obama?

I haven't spoken publicly 'til now as to who I would vote for, primarily for two reasons: 1) Who cares?; and 2) I (and most people I know) don't give a rat's ass whose name is on the ballot in November, as long as there's a picture of JFK and FDR riding a donkey at the top of the ballot, and the word "Democratic" next to the candidate's name.

Seriously, I know so many people who don't care if the name under the Big "D" is Dancer, Prancer, Clinton or Blitzen. It can be Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Barry Obama or the Dalai Lama.

Well, that sounded good last year, but over the past two months, the actions and words of Hillary Clinton have gone from being merely disappointing to downright disgusting. I guess the debate last week was the final straw. I've watched Senator Clinton and her husband play this game of appealing to the worst side of white people, but last Wednesday, when she hurled the name "Farrakhan" out of nowhere, well that's when the silly season came to an early end for me. She said the "F" word to scare white people, pure and simple. Of course, Obama has no connection to Farrakhan. But, according to Senator Clinton, Obama's pastor does -- AND the "church bulletin" once included a Los Angeles Times op-ed from some guy with Hamas! No, not the church bulletin!

As for Toms Red Winks, they simply had to hutle against an inferior and injury ridden Predator team that took two games from them...........now, the REAL competition comes tho, and the Eastern conference plays some tough hockey as well................prediction..Red Winks dont even make it to the finals...............

Yes, that what they said about the Wings when they busted through Calgary and San Jose to meet Anaheim last year, because Detroit lost Schneider and Krowall to injuries in the Conference finals.  In fact, Detroit was called inferior to every team they faced in last year's playoffs. Too bad they made their opponents hustle regardless.

I've also flipped a coin and determined that the Wings will make it to the finals, and that Clinton won't become the Democratic nominee this year.  Time will tell.

An epidemic of party switching worries me, because that usually works in Hillary's favor. Remember, she's the one the GOP wants to run against, hence the endorsement by Richard Mellon Scaife's Pittsburgh newspaper.

I'll be really happy when tomorrow's over, for better or worse.

If I'm reading this correctly, the Boston Marathon has the women's first place cash prize higher than the men's:

http://www.bostonmarathon.org/2008/cf/Public/Commentary.htm

Women's Race Day Commentary

9:25 a.m. The women's wheelchair race has begun. Back this year are defending champion Wakako Tsuchida of Japan and two-time Boston winner Cheri Blauwet, returning after taking a break for her medical studies at Stanford.

9:15 a.m. Greeted by overcast skies and a temperature reading of 50 degrees, the field of 11 women in the 112th Boston Marathon must be less anxious at the starting line than they were in last year's cold, rain and wind. But there is still a race to run - and hopefully win - so you can be sure they are all still battling nerves of a different kind.

...

They and their rivals will all be chasing the $150,000 first-place prize, the biggest ever guaranteed in a marathon.

Stay here throughout the race for mile-by-mile updates.

The 112th Boston Marathon start times are as follows:

9:25 a.m. Wheelchair Division Start
9:35 a.m. Elite Women's Start
10:00 a.m. Elite Men & Wave 1 Start
10:30 a.m. Wave 2 Start

...

Men's Race Day Commentary

9:32 a.m. - A few facts: There are two past champions in the field, Robert Cheruiyot (2003, 2006, 2007) and Timothy Cherigat (2004).

...

The man appearing most likely to contend for the $100,000 winner's purse is the same man who did so last year, James Kwambai.

April 21, 2008 The Rockridge Era Ends

An important announcement from the Rockridge Institute

First, a big Thank You!

The Rockridge Institute was founded with a mission: to teach Americans about the role of values and framing in political debate, and to help progressives equalize the framing advantages enjoyed by conservatives. With your help, Rockridge has done more than any small think tank could be expected to do. About 1,000 of you have donated to support our efforts. More than 8,000 have registered as members of Rockridge Nation to engage actively with us. And hundreds of thousands, both in the US and abroad, have bought our books and used our materials. If you are one of those hundreds of thousands, political discourse will now look different to you. As you read the newspapers and the blogs and watch TV, you can see the effects of our work everywhere. Your support has made that possible. For this and so much more, you have our complete admiration and gratitude.

Nonetheless, the Rockridge era will come to an end on April 30.

What we have written will remain as archives on our websites www.rockridgeinstitute.org and www.rockridgenation.org.

Good  Morning,

Good Luck, Jo.  A job we love isn't a job, it's a contribution to life.   I'll think good thoughts.  You certainly  offer a lot in the communication field: reason, perceptiveness, inclusiveness, insight.

And, here's hoping, fingers crossed, beseeching the gods, etc.  We have so many serious, possibly catastrophic problems that leadership is a desperate necessity.  Maybe that's part of the venom and polarizing, a sense of fear underneath all this, that more bad leadership, corruption, collusion, war mongering will sink the human species.

And yes, Michael Ellis, ideologues of whatever stripe do more damage than good; we've at least a hundred years of history that show that.

Character, intelligence, commitment, and transparency are paramount, and Obama is the only candidate to demonstrate that in this primary battle.  Clinton's rhetoric, actions, vantage, and pandering hopefully will be clear to what should be media savy audience.

Kunstler on transportation

http://www.kunstler.com/

Now get this: we are sleepwalking into a transportation crisis. As I already said, the airline industry is dying. The price of petroleum-based aviation fuel is killing it. And forget the fantasies about running it on bio-diesel or used french-fry oil. Driving cars will not be an adequate substitute, either. It's imperative that this country gets serious about restoring the passenger rail system. We can't not talk about it for another year. We must demand that the candidates for president speak to this issue. If you who are reading this are active reporters or editors in the news media, you've got to raise your voices behind this issue.

Suzanne Goldenberg ...

  • guardian.co.uk,

  • The outspoken film-maker Michael Moore endorsed Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination on the eve of the Pennsylvania primary tomorrow, accusing Hillary Clinton of cynically trying to inject race into the contest.

In an angry posting on his website, Moore said he had intended to stay neutral in the Democratic contest but was led to speak out after last week's debate in Philadelphia when Obama was questioned about his pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

Moore, who became famous for his cinematic rants against the gun industry, the Bush administration, and the US health care system, said he was disgusted when Clinton followed up on the moderators' line of questioning to Obama by mentioning Wright's contacts with the Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan.

The remarks, said Moore, were the final straw.

    mary @ 21

When watching the news, I always look hard at the shots of whatever rally they are showing. You will notice they often don't give you crowd shots of Obama's (because they are huge), but when they do there are no empty seats whatever the venue size.

When they show Clinton's, you will often see a dsproportionate number of people seated behind her. I often wonder if the whole audience isn't actually sitting behind the platform!

Then when they show the venue, it is almost always what you posted, half a gym with the rest curtained off, etc.

She gave it away when she griped about "Obama and his huge rallies" way back in February.

The most egregious example was the so-called "demonstration" by the would-be Michigan Clinton delegation. The space was teeny and curtained off by what looked like black plastic garbage bags taped together. Clearly they had been expecting a much better turnout.

If she stiffs any vendors I hope it's not the event staging people b/c IMO they have worked overtime to make her look interesting.

h/t First Amendment from Daily Kos: check this out from Drudge: PA isn't the *granite* state - NH is!!!!!!!!

Controlled excitement is building inside of Clinton's inner circle as closely guarded internal polling shows the former first lady with an 11-point lead in Pennsylvania!

Clinton is polling near to nearly 2 to 1 over Obama in many regions of the granite state, a top insider explained to the DRUDGE REPORT.

A strong coalition of middle-class and religious voters has all but secured a Clinton victory Tuesday, with headline-making margins, the campaign believes.

"It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of how much," a senior campaign source said Monday morning.

When pressed if the dramatic internal polling numbers could somehow be flawed in a state as demographically complex as Pennsylvania, and with new voter registration surging to unseen levels, the campaign insider held firm.

"Senator Obama would be wise not to unpack his bags quite yet."

The Clinton campaign can gloat about PA all they want.  They still cannnot be happy she is in debt.  Also according to this article she needs more than an 11 point victory, she needs a 20 point victory, I cannot see that happening.  And she needs hugh victory's in the upcoming primaries as well.  Plus she needs hugh turnouts in all the upcoming states.  Seems to me the hugh turnouts always favor Obama.

let the Clintons bray it from every roof if they think they're winning big - Obama will do better if they do.  in previous primaries when folks thought HIllary was in trouble they decided for her at the last minute .  I don't think so many are feeling sorry for her now or feeling that they want to 'vet' them a bit more before someone takes it, but her boasts of big wins in PA could really swing things his way, imo.

and (imo) it would be fitting if she bragged herself right out of the race....  ;)
