Progressive Values Stories: Drew & Carol on Openness v Secrecy

Written by: Edwin Rutsch on Apr 3, 2008 12:43 PM EDT

Linked to groups: What are Progressive Values? Study Group

I met Drew at an Obama event  in Oakland, California and Carol Hanelberg at a convention in Los Angeles.  They both had in common a value of openness. Drew is disturbed about the secrecy in government and feels Barack Obama will bring transparency. Carol talked about openness starting at home and extending  out to family, friends and society.

"The best weapon of a dictatorship is secrecy, but the best weapon of a democracy should be the weapon of openness."
Niels Bohr

"Where secrecy or mystery begins, vice or roguery is not far off."
Samuel Johnson

Progressive Values Stories: Drew on Openness v Secrecy

The Bush administration has been one of the most secretive administrations and it really has affected my trust in my government, the way I have viewed my ability to be involved in politics.  I have really respected Obama’s commitment to transparency in government, a government that is accountable for its own actions.

That’s what democracy is really about – being able to be in involved, and honesty and transparency.  So I really support him on these points.

I think it’s about trust and that your government is abiding by their own rules and not trying to have only their self interests in mind but the public in mind.  And unless, they’re open about it, I think people inherently will agree that they’re up to no good, that they’re against their speaking points.  And in this particular administration, I think they  really are.  In the war in Iraq, it’s so clear to me that a lot of accusations they made before going to war with Iraq were trumped up.  I think they need to be held accountable, and I think Barack will hopefully be transparent from the beginning, so those types of mistakes won’t happen again…

You confront your mistakes, and the most important thing is to learn from your mistakes, and if you apply that to politics, we all have to learn from our mistakes with the economy, with the way we have dealt with social issues.  I think there is a lot that is not being said, and I hope that will change.

If you don't learn from your mistakes, you will continue to make them.  And still trust in the public.  And if the public does not trust the administration, there is not going to be a real democracy, as I see it.  So that's my take on it.

“Nothing is more dangerous than a dogmatic worldview - nothing more constraining, more blinding to innovation, more destructive of openness to novelty.”
Stephen Jay Gould

Carol Hanelberg on Openness and Caring

I live in Orange County in Huntington Beach.  I’m involved here in setting up the table for Clean Money.  I think my progressive values is maybe like traditional values, because I believe having open communication within your family, my children, my boyfriend, my close family, my brothers, my mother and also friends.  And just thinking about other people outside of yourself.

I think if you start here, then you can build on it, and use that throughout your community, city and state, and so on and so forth.  I think they can be used on a larger scale, but I think the basics start at home – with yourself and the people that are closest to you.

I think about my mother.  In growing up, my mother was very open, very verbal, was a good communicator.  My dad was more on the quiet side. But then you also get a message by learning or looking for things from quiet people as well.  I don’t remember a particular story, but I just feel that it’s important, because miscommunications are so easy to happen if you don’t really check with a person and make sure that what you’ve said is understood, and that you give them also a chance to talk and express themselves.

I think communication, the closeness, caring about other people.  I think that starts, of course, in your family, the way your brought up with your parents’ values, family values, and then what you learn from that, what you want to do a little bit differently with your own family.  So I think it starts with your family, the closeness and caring, then you’re able to project that and use that with other people outside of your family.

Edwin:  How did you develop that sense of caring?

Answer:  I know that I didn’t really know what I wanted to become when I grew up when I was a little girl.  But I did know that I wanted to have a family.  I felt the motherly, maternal instinct.  And I think that carries throughout your job, and also any work you do in the community.

More  Resources about Openness and Transparency

 Definition:
- affording unobstructed entrance and exit; not shut or closed.
- characterized by an attitude of ready accessibility (especially about one's actions or purposes); not secretive ....
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/openness
http://www.wordreference.com/definition/openness

Transparency
Transparency, as used in the humanities, implies openness, communication, and accountability. It is a metaphorical extension of the meaning used in the physical sciences: a "transparent" object is one that can be seen through.

Transparency is introduced as a means of holding public officials accountable and fighting corruption. When government meetings are open to the press and the public, when budgets and financial statements may be reviewed by anyone, when laws, rules and decisions are open to discussion, they are seen as transparent and there is less opportunity for the authorities to abuse the system in their own interest.....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transparency_(humanities)

Open Society
In open societies, government is responsive and tolerant, and political mechanisms are transparent and flexible.....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_society

Open Government
Open government is the political doctrine which holds that the business of government and state administration should be opened at all levels to effective public scrutiny and oversight. In its broadest construction it opposes reason of state and national security considerations, which have tended to legitimize extensive state secrecy....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_government

Some Questions To Ponder:
 -  What are your thoughts about openness, transparency and secrecy?
 -  Do you have a personal story or anecdote of how you learned some insight into these values?
 -  How has the conservative value of secrecy failed?
 -  How have conservative values in general failed?

Hillary's SD gas tanks are starting to suck fumes... et tu, Jack, Jon?

(CNN) — Two prominent supporters of Hillary Clinton suggested Thursday the New York senator needs to best rival Barack Obama in the total popular vote to have any chance at winning her party's presidential nomination.

In separate media interviews, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine and Pennsylvania Rep. Jack Murtha both indicated they believed Clinton will be unable to convince enough superdelegates to support her if she finishes second to Obama in both the pledged delegate count and the popular vote.

clip... Corzine also suggested he himself may cast his superdelegate vote for Obama should Clinton fail to win the popular vote, though the New Jersey governor insisted he thought Clinton would come out on top in that count if the Florida and Michigan contests were counted.

Murtha echoed Corzine's sentiments in an interview later Thursday, saying, "Clinton has to win Pennsylvania…She has to be ahead in the popular vote to have any chance at all of getting this nomination."

For me, this is such exciting news and it seems BO is involved in it, even if covertly.  I've been waiting for one or both candidates to say something about this...and now, if BO will come out openly and endorse this group, I may have to vote for him in the primary - which means re-registering.  :-)

IMO, unless we change our aggressive ME war policy, we'll never  have the will or money to take care of our own citizens.  It's time to take down or at least challenge AIPAC and have a US dialogue about I/P.

I'm really hopeful....finally.  This is a great article.

http://www.thejewishweek.com/viewArticle/c39_a5882/News/International.html

"....Several activists with ties to Democratic presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama are on the panel, as well. They include Robert Malley, whose involvement in Obama’s broad foreign policy advisory team has generated criticism from Republicans and some pro-Israel groups, and Alan Solomont, a top Obama fundraiser and major player in Democratic politics.

Also on board: David Kimche, a former deputy chief of the Mossad and a member of the advisory council of the Israel Policy Forum (IPF) — another pro-peace process group that was connected with last year’s efforts but which, several source say, is not directly involved in the current project.

Several activists associated with the project say the goal is to offer lawmakers an alternative perspective that they say is closer to the consensus positions of American Jews than that offered by major pro-Israel groups like AIPAC, which they say have not supported aggressive U.S. peacemaking in the region.

Yes!!!  Go, J Street!

Susan - my Dad built things out of sheet metal, but not cars.  and my first car was a Nova, too.  1967, maroon, 4 door - it was the 'old style'.  it really ticked me off when they changed the body style of the Nova!

Another Clinton Fundraiser Has A Suspect Past

HOUSTON — A Texas oilman who's accused of defrauding the Nigerian government by illegally pumping and exporting 10 million barrels of oil is a major fundraiser for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

Kase Lawal of Houston is at least the fourth person accused or convicted of criminal wrongdoing to help finance Clinton's political ambitions since 2000 and the second in her quest for the White House. The list also includes Chinese and Pakistani fugitives and a former Miami lawyer who was convicted of defrauding Cuba.

PRESS RELEASE: Betty Hall

April 3, 2008

Brookline, NH - NH State Representative Betty Hall is hosting Dr. Daniel Ellsberg, Vietnam War critic, for a special event at the Capitol Center for the Arts Monday April 14 at 7pm. It was Ellsberg who released the Pentagon papers which helped end the Vietnam War. Ellsberg will be headlining a group of supporters for Betty Hall's HR24, which, if passed in the NH House would ask the US House to begin an investigation to verify if there is sufficient cause to hold our government leaders responsible, as provided in Jefferson's Manual, Section 603.

Hall's petition specifically cites President Bush and Vice-President Cheney. The historic vote will come to the NH House on Wednesday, April 16.

If passed, it will represent the first time that a state legislature would have invoked the special privilege to ask the US House for investigations to begin with a President and Vice-President. It does not need to be passed through the NH Senate, nor obtain the signature of NH Governor Lynch.

Hall has stated, "My failure to vote for the NH House Resolution for the Nixon Impeachment is the absolutely biggest regret of my legislative career. That is why I am so dedicated to doing this now."

Also present will be former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark, who served under President Lyndon B. Johnson; Dr. Robert Bowman, who was the director of the Star Wars missile defense program under Presidents Ford and Carter; John Nichols, writer for The Nation magazine and author of "The Genius of Impeachment: The Founders' Cure for Royalism"; Phil Burk, businessman and impeachment scholar who is versed in the rules of law outlined in Jefferson's Manual. Other dignitaries are rescheduling commitments to attend the historic gathering, which is open to the public.
Speakers are scheduled for a 4 pm press conference at the restored Victorian mansion, Kimball House, as well as a 5:30 pm reception with NH State Representatives who will be able to personally exchange opinions with the honored guests.
The public is invited to contact the Capitol Center for the Arts for tickets (225-1111) for the Monday April 14, 7pm event; tickets go on sale Monday, April 7. Free on street parking and free parking at the Capital Commons Garage on Storrs Street, after 5:00.

The lure I cast here yesterday must have either hit the weeds or was not enticing enough to get a second look...I'll cast another.

The Republicans have always acted like they own our flag...with the "either you're with us or you're against us" attitude.

Corporations have worked themselves into being a political player in our democracy...Religion too...hello people!

More people have finally started opening their eyes and they're getting engaged in their government. A democracy doesn't function well for the people unless the people are engaged in the process.

We should have a day to celebrate democracy...OUR DEMOCRACY. A day of celebration and education of the citizenry of our country. The highest form of patriotism in a democracy is to be democratic.

From The Economist print edition

Not an April fool, honestly

IN THE weeks before Trinity...Similarly, an experiment carried out in Long Island a few years ago...

The bugaboo this time is black holes. A black hole is an object so dense (and thus with such a strong gravitational field) that nothing—not even light—can escape it. Not surprisingly, no such object has ever been observed directly. However, the indirect effects of black holes can be seen all over the place, and the universe would not make sense without them, so there is little doubt that they really do exist.

Campaigners urge ban on cancer-link chemicals

David Batty and agencies guardian.co.uk,
 Wednesday April 2 2008

Health campaigners today called for a Europe-wide ban on man-made chemicals found in cosmetics and pesticides to help cut rising rates of breast cancer.

A report published today warns that cases of the disease can only be reduced by removing hormone-disrupting man-made chemicals from a range of household products.

The study by Professor Andreas Kortenkamp, the head of toxicology at the University of London's school of pharmacy, states: "We will not be able to reduce the risk of breast cancer without addressing preventable causes, particularly exposure to chemicals."....

Environmental group co-founder talks about chemicals found in humans

By Paul Wood
Tuesday April 1, 2008

CHAMPAIGN – If you make a dangerous chemical in a pesticide lab, 120 laws regulate your work.

Cross the hall and do it in a consumer products lab – 0 regulations, says Kenneth A. Cook, who co-founded the Environmental Working Group in 2002.

Cook was in town Monday as the guest of state Rep. Naomi D. Jakobsson, D-Urbana. She's the sponsor of a bill that would ban phthalates in children's products, another one of Cook's concerns.

Though phthalates are considered hazardous waste and are regulated as air and water pollutants, the Environmental Working Group contends, they are unregulated in food, cosmetics and consumer and medical products.

Your body is full of chemicals, many of them necessary for life itself, and not a few you'd probably rather live without.

When Cook's group took samples from 10 Americans in 2004, they found 287 industrial chemicals among them, some of them banned as long ago as the 1970s...

But that equation, to be true, mens that information must be lost in the Black Hole, in other words it will evenually disappear with all the matter absorbed over millions of year and that is not possible to be consitent with physics as we know it. That is why Hawking has posed the solution to his own paradox that there are other universes into which the information passes. Hardly an answer that sits well in the physics community.

Man with no country
Just a guitar and a love that he sung
(he only wants to see)

Man with no country
walking along down long dusty roads
(he wants to stay ahead of everything)

He's got to see new horizons each day
He'll never stay

Man with no country
Looks up and sees birds in the sky
(he wants to be so free to fly high)

Man with no country
Never looks back to that place that he´s coming from
(something inside him always moving on)

Though he'll remember the moments of making new friends each day
Still he won't stay

Man with no country
Comes into town and looks for a bar
(somwehere that he can play his acoustic guitar)

The girl at a moment sees him and says "I'd like the way that you
touch the strings
come play with me I'll give you everything"

But he's such in other things that will set him so free
(that's the way he knows it's got to be)
And heaven is a long long way from where he stands
He's a very lonely man

But he's such in other things that will set him so free
(that's the way he knows it's got to be)
It's gotta be
And heaven is a long long way from where he stands

Elvis Costello - Oliver's Army

Don't start me talking
I could talk all night
My mind goes sleepwalking
While I'm putting the world to right
Called careers information
Have you got yourself an occupation?

[Chorus:]
Oliver's army is here to stay
Oliver's army are on their way
And I would rather be anywhere else
But here today

There was a checkpoint Charlie
He didn't crack a smile
But it's no laughing party
When you've been on the murder mile

Only takes one itchy trigger
One more widow, one less white nigger

[Chorus]

Hong Kong is up for grabs
London is full of Arabs
We could be in Palestine
Overrun by a Chinese line
With the boys from the Mersey and the Thames and the Tyne

But there's no danger
It's a professional career
Though it could be arranged
With just a word in Mr. Churchill's ear

If you're out of luck or out of work
We could send you to Johannesburg

[Chorus]
