AK-47 assualt rifles in America
In 2005 the United States lifted the ban AK-47 assualt rifles. In the years since the number of AK-47 assualt rifles being in America is up 11%--and the only reason to have an AK-47 is to kill people (let's be honest, no one hunts with an AK-47).
Judge Andrew P. Napolitano noted in his book A Nation of Sheep that the only folks in America whose civil liberties have been circumscribed in the name of homeland security under the Bush Administration are the gun owners. I don't agree with a fair share of what Napolitano believes, but on this point, I have to agree entirely.
And think about it: so many of our rights have been eliminated our curtailed by this administration in the name of homeland security, and yet the ban on assualt rifles was lifted in a direct pandering to the NRA. Having AK-47s on the street is a serious threat to the security of our home and of our homeland.
Assualt rifles have no place on American streets.

Bloomberg to introduce Obama tomorrow in NY for his economic speech. This can't be nice for Clinton since this is her mayor. Although it isn't an endorsement - it must be unsettling for Team Clinton.

NBC-WSJ POLL: NEW CLINTON LOWS
As expected, one of the two major Democratic candidates saw a downturn in the latest NBC/WSJ poll, but it's not the candidate that you think. Hillary Clinton is sporting the lowest personal ratings of the campaign. Moreover, her 37 percent positive rating is the lowest the NBC/WSJ poll has recorded since March 2001, two months after she was elected to the U.S. Senate from New York.
The poll was conducted Monday and Tuesday this week by Hart-McInturff and surveyed 700 registered voters, which gives the poll a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percent. In addition, we oversampled African-Americans in order to get a more reliable cross-tab on many of the questions we asked in this poll regarding Sen. Barack Obama's speech on race and overall response to last week's Rev. Jeremiah Wright dustup

Hillary's History of Lies
The USA Today/Gallup survey clearly explains why Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) is losing. Asked whether the candidates were “honest and trustworthy,” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) won with 67 percent, with Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) right behind him at 63. Hillary scored only 44 percent, the lowest rating for any candidate for any attribute in the poll.
Hillary simply cannot tell the truth
Wonder if she'll self-destruct before Pennsylvania?

Hillary And The Ranting Right -- A Tale Of Redemption
Yesterday, Hillary Clinton met with the very rightwing lunatic who spent millions of dollars trying to bring the Clintons down, including trying to connect Hillary to Vince Foster's death, Richard Mellon Scaife.
And today, the Clinton campaign (Phil Singer) leads off the day by circulating an article from loony rightwing rag and Scaife-funded, American Spectator that essentially calls Obama adviser, McPeak, an anti-semite and concludes that Obama "has a Jewish problem."
But the Scaife favors for Hillary didn't end there...

And from last thread, after the first comment, then the clarification from Jenny Lorain, this remark from Denise.
"Jennie the light just came on, never mind :) Had to read it again. I thought I read "Judy for Dean" one of our beloved bloggers.
You mean Howard's wife - and I agree."

Had also figured things out before Jenny's clarification, but for a moment, had the same reaction as Denise (altho I never thought I was *beloved,* LOL).
Jenny's remark was in the context of how we at BFA would all come to the defense of a certain spouse of a certain candidate.
Just to be clear, I am a great admirer of Michelle Obama. She demonstrates good judgment on the part of her spouse.
And, sorry for the confusion with my blog name and Judy Dean's. Should I change mine?
Nah ... there's a reason for keeping it.

Democrat says he's ‘most godly' candidate for governor
By JENNIFER McKEE Missoulian State Bureau
HELENA - Bill Fischer's take on the Democratic race for governor is fairly simple:
“Whatever individual would give the greatest glory to the name of Jesus and the greatest glory to the people of Montana should be the winner. I'm asking people to vote for the most godly man,” he said.
And, not to disparage Gov. Brian Schweitzer or the other Democratic candidate in the field, but Fischer, a self-employed excavator and logger from Lakeside, believes that he is the most godly candidate.

Dan Froomkin's column yesterday deals with an issue that will probably not make us any more beloved on the int'l scene than we already are.
Our goodwill abroad is at unprecedented lows.
And we now have an SC decision on the books that may come back to bite US citizens who happen to be arrested in foreign jurisdictions, rightly or worse, wrongfully.
putz, as usual, wanted to have things both ways and then pull a fast one. While having it both ways would have been wrong, I believe that the SC may also have been short-sighted here, to the detriment of US nationals abroad.

Was there ever an executive power that President Bush wasn't eager to take for a spin? The answer may be yes -- the one the Supreme Court denied him yesterday.
After all, in the case in question, Bush was asserting his right to use a World Court opinion to beat his beloved Texas into obliging a Mexican rapist and murderer on death row. Given Bush's longstanding hostility to international institutions and his energetic support of the death penalty, you got the distinct impression his heart wasn't in it.

President pays tribute to Britain and calls for 'brotherhood'
Sarkozy urges Anglo-French axis for progress in Europe and the world, and pledges more troops in Afghanistan
Julian Borger, diplomatic editor
The Guardian, Thursday March 27 2008
Nicolas Sarkozy yesterday declared the birth of an Anglo-French axis as a force for progress in Europe and the world, on issues ranging from climate change and nuclear power to UN reform and the war in Afghanistan.
Addressing both houses of parliament, President Sarkozy delivered perhaps the warmest homage to Britain delivered by any postwar French leader. Differences over the European Union and past rivalries, he said, could be overcome.
"In the name of the French people, I have come to propose to the people of Britain that together we write a new page in our shared history, that of a new Franco-British brotherhood - a brotherhood for the 21st century.

Continuing the bombing raids in Pakistan will certainly not endear us to its new government.
Nor will they elicit its cooperation, which is what is needed.
Just a reminder: John Negroponte was one of the key figures in Iran-Contra. Having this criminal remain in key diplomatic positions as he has (and as have several others from this sordid affair) during putzCo makes *diplomacy* a sham.

The Bush administration is scrambling to engage with Pakistan's new rulers as power flows from its strong ally, President Pervez Musharraf, to a powerful civilian government buoyed by anti-American sentiment.
Top diplomats John Negroponte and Richard Boucher travelled to a mountain fortress near the Afghan border yesterday as part of a hastily announced visit that has received a tepid reception.
On Tuesday, senior coalition partner Nawaz Sharif gave the visiting Americans a public scolding for using Pakistan as a "killing field" and relying too much on Musharraf.

Environmentalists claim governor dropped friend as park chief after toll road row
Ewen MacAskill in Washington
The Guardian, Thursday March 27 2008
Clint Eastwood is said to be planning to reprise his role as the maverick, Magnum-toting cop from Dirty Harry. Rumours suggested that his first victim was likely to be Arnold Schwarzenegger, who last week showed a ruthless streak Eastwood's character would be proud of when he terminated the star's contract as a California park commissioner.
But the California governor can relax: Eastwood does not have him in his sights, using an interview yesterday to play down the row over his firing.
The official line from the governor's office is that Eastwood's tenure has expired and it is time to give someone else a chance. But environmentalists claim the real reason is because of his opposition to Schwarzenegger's plan to push a six-lane toll road through the San Onofre state beach.

Iraq implodes as Shia fights Shia
Another tragedy as the Shia majority turn on each other
By Patrick Cockburn
Thursday, 27 March 2008
A new civil war is threatening to explode in Iraq as American-backed Iraqi government forces fight Shia militiamen for control of Basra and parts of Baghdad.
Heavy fighting engulfed Iraq's two largest cities and spread to other towns yesterday as the Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, gave fighters of the Mehdi Army, led by the radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, 72 hours to surrender their weapons.
The gun battles between soldiers and militiamen, who are all Shia Muslims, show that Iraq's majority Shia community – which replaced Saddam Hussein's Sunni regime – is splitting apart for the first time.

US/IRAQ: Sadr Offensive Shows Failure of Petraeus Strategy
Analysis by Gareth Porter*
WASHINGTON, Mar 26 (IPS) - The escalation of fighting between Mahdi Army militiamen and their Shiite rivals, which could mark the end of Moqtada al-Sadr's self-imposed ceasefire, also exposes Gen. David Petraeus's strategy for controlling Sadr's forces as a failure.
Petraeus reacted immediately to Sunday's rocket attacks on the Green Zone by blaming them on Iran. He told the BBC the rockets were "Iranian provided, Iranian-made rockets", and that they were launched by groups that were funded and trained by the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Petraeus said this was "in complete violation of promises made by President [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad and other most senior Iranian leaders to their Iraqi counterparts".
Petraeus statement was clearly intended to divert attention from a development that threatens one of the two main pillars of the administration's claim of progress in Iraq -- the willingness of Sadr to restrain the Mahdi Army, even in the face of systematic raids on its leadership by the U.S. military and its Iraqi allies.

POLITICS-US: McCain's Gaffes Reflect Bush's Iran-Qaeda Myth
Analysis by Gareth Porter*
WASHINGTON, Mar 21 (IPS) - Sen. John McCain's confusion in recent allegations of Iranian training of al Qaeda fighters in Iraq is the result of a drumbeat of official propaganda about close Iran-al Qaeda ties that the George W. Bush administration and neoconservatives have promoted ever since early 2002.
McCain, the Republican nominee for the presidency, was confusing the Bush administration's charges of Iranian training of Shi'a militiamen associated with the Mahdi Army with the administration's propaganda theme of Iranian tacit or explicit support for al Qaeda operatives in Iran -- charges which have amplified by right-wing media.
During a press conference in Jordan Tuesday, McCain brought up the charge that Iran with training al Qaeda operatives and sending them to Iraq, then corrected himself after Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a Democrat from Connecticut, whispered in his ear. It was the fourth time in a little over three weeks, however, that McCain had made the same charge.

Good morning, everybody
There must be some sort of stages that victims go through and I have reached angry. Yes, I woke up angry and I don't think it will go away because it feels right.
I am angry that even a minority of my fellow countrymen would consider a man like John McCain as a potential president. His selection is the height of irresponsible behavior. His having displayed blind obedience and bombed another nation was wrong. Bombing Vietnam was wrong. Bombing Iraq now is wrong. Chanting a ditty about bombing Iran later is also wrong.
The best I can say about John McCain is that he's Vietnam's revenge on American. They sent us back a man with a twisted shoulder and a twisted psyche to drive the nation to perdition.
In the process of looking for how many kinds of bombs we have in our arsenal (did you know that with the exception of the car bomb, the suicide bomb, and the IED, the bomb is an aviator delivered munition?) I happened across this video. The designation of John McCain as the Republican candidate tells us that it's not the men selected who are stupid.
good morning! my question of the day:
Just Who Do These Rich Clinton Donors Think They Are?
The more I read about the rich donors who told Nancy Pelosi to shut up, the more angry I get. I may not agree with her on quite a few issues, but Speaker Pelosi is second in line to the Presidency, the first woman to hold her position and a figure demanding of respect - especially from people who are supposed to be her fellow Democrats. These guys seriously think that because they went to a fancy fundraiser or maybe played a round of golf with the ex-president that they really are better than the rest of us. They have every right to add their voice to the chorus supporting Sen. Clinton, but they have no place, no standing, no right to order the Speaker around.
clip... We poor unwashed masses, lacking mansions and minks and chaueffers, elected Rep. Pelosi to the position of Speaker via our representatives in the House. We may not have tee times at the golf club, a yacht parked on the intra coastal, nor do we feed our pets prime rib -- but we know that the Speaker is to be afforded a modicum of respect.
This is the stain that remains on the party even after the events of Crashing The Gate were documented by Markos Moulitsas and Jerome Armstrong. These are the hangers-on who look down their plastic surgery noses at Governor Dean's 50-state strategy and his middle class demeanor even as the party begins to regain its role as a truly national party. These are the people who think nothing - nothing - of throwing a tantrum because us people, us regular Joes and Janes, had the gall to not vote and caucus for the candidate they bankrolled and sought to shove down our gullets the way they always do. Instead we chose to vote for a candidate whose donor base is almost 2 million strong. Just like a couple of weeks ago when they were demanding refunds of their donations to the party they thought they owned they are once again trying to tell us they bought the Democratic party the same way they bought a diamond necklace at Tiffany's for their trophy wife.
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/03/26/clinton_donors_warn_pelosi_on.html
how do we know the surge has failed? Since the object of the surge was pacification and the Iraqis are clearly not pacified, it's obvious.
Looks like other people are waking up angry, as well. Americans were quite happy to put up with a bunch of filty rich who considered themselves to be elite on the basis of having acquired (by hook or by crook) a lot of wealth. But the idea that being filthy rich entitles them to rule doesn't sit well with the average Jo. As Obama said the other day, most Americans have modest aspirations. This is a virtue. Modesty, whether in behavior, dress or aspiration, should not be taken as an excuse for abuse and disdain.
That we've got hoity-toity pricks in both the Republican and the Democratic party doesn't make it OK to let them get away with their arrogance. Enough is enough.
"diplomacy" in the Bush/Cheney dictionary is just a fancy word for "threat"
"negotiate" is also another word for "threat"
good morning Monica! yes, this average Jo says enough is enough! I do believe a large number of American democrats have realized that this isn't just about Clinton vs Obama - it's about purchased power vs the American voice.
rae at 5.
I had forgotten Hillary's story about Chelsea being near Ground Zero, but your post reminded me that it was reported at the time, with the later revision that she wasn't.
At the time, it was easy to forget; bigger things on all our minds.
Everything Hillary says and does sets women's struggle for equality back another notch. She acts like a spoiled little kid and the only bright spot is, on balance, so does Bill.
Last night on NBC, they showed tape clips of her telling the Bosnia lie on 4 separate occasions (after claiming it was a slip due to sleep deprivation).
Time for her and Bill to pack their bags and retire somewhere.
-- volney
PS Don't forget another of her fables, that she was named for Sir Edmund Hillary, even though when she was born and named he was still an unknown beekeeper who hadn't climbed anything yet.
Jo
thanks for that
Obama has been transformed by his donor base whether he meant it or not, and it is now a proxy fight between the duopoly and the people
dance with the ones that brung ya"or else" says Hillary's backers (and yes they are crass enough to use that language, by their action) to the DNC and the answer to that has to be a million more little donors for Howard
Obama has opened the door to changing politics for decades to come if we are brave enough to walk through and claim that "seat at the table"
what Carville said about Richardson was more disgusting than anything Rev. Wright said but I haven't heard Hillary condemn him either
the current fight has very little to do with the two candidates and much to do with the long term health of the Democratic Party and who it represents, party bosses and the special interests that give them orders, or the people

The rise extended Wednesday's gains of $4 a barrel after a US report showed lower-than-expected petrol stocks.

Calling his campaign a referendum on the war, Lugo said that the democrats are sitting on the fence and he didn't think that continuing to run as a democrat would be a good fit for his campaign. "I am running for office because I want to end the war in Iraq. It is time to bring the troops home and acknowledge the terrible injustice that we have caused. It is time to stop rationalizing our wasteful military spending and abuse of the national trust in the name of a war that never should have happened. We have lost too many good people with no clear objective. We are basically repeating the mistakes of Vietnam."
Lugo said that after running as a democrat for three months his sense was that they are not ready to end the war. "Personally I think the democrats are in a better position to do some good than the republicans, but I don't think the democrats are ready yet to do the right thing. I had hoped that by running I might help push the dialogue on the peace issue, but the democrats didn't really seem to be interested. So I am going to go back to my roots as a progressive and seek the nomination of the green party which has a stronger position on the issue of peace and a generally more progressive platform all around."
According to a recent poll, about 47% of Americans say that the we should stay the course in Iraq, citing the need to stay and take care of the situation that has been created by ongoing US occupation. In contrast, Lugo feels that the troops should be withdrawn immediately. "I was listening to General Abizaid speak this week at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He was talking about our need to protect America by being in Iraq. This is the basic problem. We are not protecting America by occupying Iraq. Iraq did not attack the United States. We attacked them. If anything we have made ourselves more insecure by occupying Iraq. We have created wounds that will take generations to heal. We have made enemies who will not forget us in their lifetime."
Citing a lack of interest in the peace issue within the democratic party, Lugo said that he was going in a different direction. "I am all for dialogue and debate on the issues, but it seems clear to me that the democratic party is not on board regarding this issue. For me the war is a moral issue of profound significance. I don't think that we can remain in Iraq and consider ourselves to be a moral nation or a righteous country. We have already violated international law and basic decency by attacking a country that was significantly weaker than us and occupying it with no clear mandate. I don't think the democratic party in Tennessee sees this issue the same way I do." .... http://www.knoxviews.com/node/7377

San Juan, Puerto Rico - Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton will pose a question to a contestant in the Miss World Puerto Rico pageant via a prerecorded video
...
Clinton was invited to participate by pageant organizers and had a lot of fun recording the question for tonight's pageant, according to spokesman Angel Urena. He did not say what Clinton will ask on the video.

Maybe she'll ask the contestant:
¿Es su nombre Monica?
Judy: "Continuing the bombing raids in Pakistan will certainly not endear us to its new government."
If the targets are dead what the Pakistani's complain about after is just cover. They want the islamist taken out just as much as we do. Do YOU hope they have safe haven there???
Sitka, if you bothered to go to the link, you'd find I quote a very small fraction of the article.
Well, if you won't listen to me, hopefully you'll listen to Danny who asked that you post less and link more.

Sitka is pretty selective in criticizing "Long Posts" (actually mine are usually 2 or 3 paragraphs with a link to a much longer article).
I haven't seen him go after Bearse or Dorgan for their long and tedious pro-Obama screeds

John,
I have been ignoring Sitka for several months. He adds nothing to any discussion. In the immortal words of Mike Ditka, "An empty tin can makes a lot of noise" and Sitka is an empty tin can.
Skip over anything he posts and the blog catchup time is greatly reduced with no valuable content missing.
John wrote "I haven't seen him go after Bearse or Dorgan for their long and tedious pro-Obama screeds"
Or the tendentious articles that Jennie and seashell linked to showing the resentment of American Jews towards the Obama campaign's obvious bias against Israel.
