A Democrat in the White House
I wanted to highlight an interesting editorial over at Buzzflash.com: Can Democrats get past the Obama-Clinton battle to 'live long and prosper'?. There are always passionate discussions in the comments about the different Democratic candidates and I just hope we all remained focused on defeating John McCain and increasing our majorities in the House and Senate. From Buzzflash:
Maintaining logic is lousy when you are behind a candidate, but vital when you are trying to cover a campaign. But don't confuse cold logic with uncaring. My focus is on the prize, a Democrat in the White House and significant increases in Democratic ranks in the House and Senate along with state House, Senate, and governors races.
One phrase we have repeated is that we intend to fully support the Democratic Party candidate for president, regardless of whom that is. Some readers have a hard time believing that. I can understand their point, but to quote Spock, their positions are "highly illogical."

Thanks, Denise, for the cute joke.
Objectivity is second!
Deaniac makes good points that I've also thought about. BO needs to come out now and say that we're leaving Iraq, ASAP, lock, stock and repeating rifles. Then he needs to retract his statement that we have to "win the war in Afghan." Then he needs to retract his statement that he would go into (bomb) Iran with actionable intel and w/o permission from the sovereign state.
If he says this and if I believe that, I may consider registering as a dem and voting in the OR primary for him.
If he has the courage to talk about an even-handed approach in I/P, I'll register the day he says that. (he already alluded to that and then took it back by kissing facing with AIPAC)
If HC makes a "peace" statement, along the above lines, I'll vote for her.
Right now, the misspeaking, lies and stretching of the truth are coming from everywhere. They're politicians and can smell the power of the unitary executive.
****************************
S/O on the CM was talking about "grudge voting" - throwing your vote to green or Gravel or whomever if your candidate isn't the nominee.
I would suggest that when fear of either candiate is stronger and deeper than love of country, which McC will finish off, no doubt, leading perhaps to nuke war, than there's little hope, is there? And hate is not the opposite of love. The opposite of love is fear. Hate is Fear.
On a personal level, I'm not afraid of any of the 3 or how they govern. But the country as a whole should be very afraid of McC. Very. He'll blow up the world in a heartbeat.
Who's on the tickie with him? Condi? Huck?
At the very least, guys, think of your grandbabies if McC wins.
Oh well. Off to run errands and then paint.
Good firsties, Susan.

There are no opposites in love. Love is the great unifer. Point zero has no polarity. Polarity begins at light.

Subject: Earth: The Sequel
Dear Susan,
Fred Krupp, President of the Environmental Defense Fund and journalist Miriam Horn have just published a fascinating book called Earth: The Sequel - The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Warming.
The book tells the story of scientists and businessmen working on the front lines to solve the climate crisis, turning our planet's greatest threat into our greatest economic opportunity.
The book also explores breakthroughs in solar, wind, and biomass technologies, in addition to examining how we must reinvent everything from cars to concrete and replace our current outdated centralized electrical grid with a smart, multidirectional energy network.
You can buy your copy of Earth The Sequel by clicking here. ... http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Sequel-Reinv...
Thank you,

Scientists have discovered the oldest human remains in western Europe.
A jawbone and teeth discovered at the famous Atapuerca site in northern Spain have been dated between 1.1 and 1.2 million years old.
The finds provide further evidence for the great antiquity of human occupation on the continent, the researchers write in the journal Nature.
Scientists also found stone tools and animal bones with tell-tale cut marks from butchering by humans.
Love knows no opposite.

""The Reverend Jeremiah Wright is an outstanding church leader whom I have heard speak a number of times," Snyder wrote. "He has served for decades as a profound voice for justice and inclusion in our society. To evaluate his dynamic ministry on the basis of two or three sound bites does a grave injustice to Dr. Wright, the members of his congregation, and the African-American church which has been the spiritual refuge of a people that has suffered from discrimination, disadvantage, and violence. Dr. Wright, a member of an integrated denomination, has been an agent of racial reconciliation while proclaiming perceptions and truths uncomfortable for some white people to hear. Those of us who are white Americans would do well to listen carefully to Dr. Wright rather than to use a few of his quotes to polarize."

OMG, don't tell Huckabee! It's prolly a relative.

Susan, YES, of course. Thank you. Love has no opposite since it's not part of the polarity. That means that if people really believe that god is love, they couldn't also believe in the *devil.*
So maybe we could say that fear and hate are on the same continuum. Is that with 2 u's?
This strikes me as well-reasoned.
- First, many people have said that there are few policy differences between Obama and Clinton, but the truth is that their telecom policies could hardly be further apart from each other. Obama proposes exactly the sort of transformative, open telecommunications policy that we need to transform the media landscape in America, while Hillary Clinton's telecom proposals are nothing more than heinous corporate welfare. Without a transformed telecommunications landscape, we are going to have an extremely difficult time building a progressive America or passing any of our other legislation.
- Second, in terms of electability, in order to win the general election a candidate must first become the nominee. Simply put, I don't see many ways for Hillary Clinton to pull that off. Further, in order to win the general election, Democrats will need time to define McCain, and time to heal the party once the nomination contest is over. However, Hillary Clinton's only path to the nomination is through the convention in late August, and also through a intra-partisan civil war. In other words, Clinton's path to the nomination renders her unelectable in the general. There simply won't be enough time to heal the party and define John McCain.
- Third, how a candidate campaigns is a strong reflection on how that candidate governs. For example, we could tell from the 2000 election that George Bush would govern through a series of power grabs, Orwellian language, and with a total disregard for popular opinion. Barack Obama, by contrast, is campaigning through unprecedented national grassroots organizing, speeches that are becoming the stuff of legend, and the manifestation of a new political coalition that moves us away from the political alignment of 1968-2004. Too often, I have heard from the Clinton campaign and its surrogates about states and demographic groups that don't matter. Such statements are a stark reminder of a recent version of the Democratic Party that takes its base for granted, and only campaigns in a select few swing districts. We need a Democratic Party that organizes and governs based on Barack Obama and Howard Dean's campaign styles, rather than one that is based on Hillary Clinton's and Terry McAuliffe's.
- Fourth, coattails and movement building matter. In both of Blue Majority's victories so far in 2008, Donna Edwards in MD-04 and Bill Foster in IL-14, the energy and activism brought to bear by Barack Obama were key. The activism in support of Barack Obama has the potential to greatly enhance the political reach of the progressive movement, and also to provide Democrats with sweeping downticket victories. I once called this progressive movement symbiosis, and I still believe it is the most promising path to a truly progressive governing majority that I have seen in my lifetime.
Will s/o please tell me why BO is NOT pushing for a do-over? A do-over would likely favor HC. I really would like a good reason since I don't think voters anywhere should be disenfranchised....the way we are most of the time, especially in primaries.
And no more first two states choosing the dem candidate. The system is broken.
What a mess.
WOW!!! a human jawbone 1.1 to 1.2 million years old...are they suggesting we evolved from apes...lol
next they'll say 9-11 was an inside...laughing too hard to finish sentence.
Isn't Rich a trekkie? LOL

Obama Adviser Supports Telecom Immunity By Jeralyn, Section Elections 2008Posted on Fri Mar 07, 2008 at 10:31:08 PM EST

Sen. Barack Obama likes to say he intends to rely on the people around him in making presidential decisions.
We've seen how that would play out with Samantha Power. Now there's John Brennan, one of his advisers on intelligence and foreign policy.
Think Progress reports:
Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has consistently spoken out and voted against granting retroactive immunity for telecoms that participated with the administration’s warrantless wiretapping program. This stance was part of the reason he won the support of Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), a leader on civil liberties issues.
One of Obama’s advisers on intelligence and foreign policy advisers, however, is someone who “strongly” supports telecomm immunity.
What Brennan told the National Journal is below the fold:
There is this great debate over whether or not the telecom companies should in fact be given immunity for their agreement to provide support and cooperate with the government after 9/11. I do believe strongly that they should be granted that immunity, because they were told to do so by the appropriate authorities that were operating in a legal context, and so I think that’s important. And I know people are concerned about that, but I do believe that’s the right thing to do. I do believe the Senate version of the FISA bill addresses the issues appropriately.
Can we really trust that what Barack Obama says on the campaign trail will be what he delivers as President?

If McCain were to be elected, it would mean that there are even more irresponsible and self-centered people in this country than we thought.
Electing a McCain has to be defined as an act of cowardice.

Monica...I see them on the road every day...they call and complain about the condition of their road but get mad when you're slowing them down trying to fix it. Flashing lights don't mean diddly-squat...if they can get by equipment in the road they're going to do it...even if it means driving in the ditch and making a mess...retirement can't come soon enough (it wasn't like this 20 years ago).
I vaguely remember BO saying this. I wonder if the powers that be would let him go thru with it. Would he fight for this or would he compromise...maybe letting us comment AFTER the legislation is signed.

Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 11:29Today, Obama is throwing down the gauntlet on a internet freedom, telecom lobbyists, and on opening up government in general to the public. It's some genuinely radical stuff, and it includes the use of blogs, wikis, and openness in government hearings. Significantly, Larry Lessig has endorsed Obama's platform.
Specifically, Obama wants the public to be able to comment on the White House Web site for five days before legislation is signed.
Electing a McCain has to be defined as an act of cowardice. "
So, Monica, what do you call a good dem who will throw McC a vote by not voting for the dem nominee...becuz their guy/gal isn't the nominee? McC may win becuz of these people who hate so much.
Remember the book "Women Who Love Too Much?" Well, this election we have "Democrats Who Hate (their own) Too Much." Very sad for our country.
Obama related to six US Pres., Truman, LBJ, Ford and I forgot the others. This is according to geneology study, so says Chris Mathews. Wonder if Obama knew this before.
BC said "Two people who love this country."
Ok, which two people and where's the proof? It's not on the tape. I think we need to stop and breathe. Things are getting ugly and being spun and frankly, I'm not sure where or when or who anymore.
Show me which two people love this country.
Show me the WMD.
if they can get by equipment in the road they're going to do it...even if it means driving in the ditch
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I see them too Reed, and the funniest was the guy I pulled out of the ditch, after he whipped around a silage wagon on a curve only to meet a car and hit the ditch, and was swearing at me for being on the road til I pointed out he had done his deed where there was a double yellow line, but what worries me more are the kids talking on the cell phone while on cruise control as they pass on the same curve and yellow lines and won't even hit the ditch
farm machinery is never going over 20mph so might as well be standing still to someone doing 65
Will s/o please tell me why BO is NOT pushing for a do-over?
It's futile in Michigan and has nothing to do with Barack pushing or not pushing for a do-over. The Republican-controlled Michigan legislature will not approve it.
The end.
