Fundamental Rights Are Not So Fundamental to President Bush
Dahlia Lithwick, writing in Slate, takes a look at the cases of Mohammad Munaf and Shawqi Omar (two US citizens being held in a US run prison in Iraq):
The Bush administration's main argument in this case is a simple one—a variation of which you may remember from the golden days of lawlessness at Guantanamo: Sure, the military authority in Iraq might look like it's composed of U.S. soldiers, the prisons may appear to be U.S. military jails, the whole effort may seem to be led by the U.S. president, but really these "enemy combatants" are not under U.S. jurisdiction. Why? Well, just as American troops are merely renting out Gitmo from the Cubans, the authorities that captured and held Omar and Munaf are actually just part of a U.N.-mandated international force.
Never is the president's respect for foreign nations greater than when they're holding the legal bag for him. Under this theory, as long as a French chef serves up some crepes in Baghdad once in a while, it's a multinational, not a U.S., army. Oh. And the reason we must allow the Iraqi courts to have their way with U.S. citizens captured there? Because the president worries that if American courts intervene, "other nations would inevitably take offense."
Wouldn't want to offend other nations.

Obama camp: Clinton trying to 'distract attention'
(CNN) -- As Sen. Barack Obama returns from his Caribbean vacation, he and his campaign pick up where they left off -- wrapped up in the controversy surrounding his former minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
[. . .]
Obama's camp said Clinton's remarks were part of a "transparent effort to distract attention away from the story she made up about dodging sniper fire in Bosnia," a reference to comments Clinton made last week.
"The truth is Barack Obama has already spoken out against his pastor's offensive comments and addressed the issue of race in America with a deeply personal and uncommonly honest speech," Obama campaign press secretary Bill Burton said.
The American people deserve better than tired political games that do nothing to solve the larger challenges facing this country."
The problem is there are too few of us. Which reminds me of a story...
During his 1956 presidential campaign, a woman called out toAdlai E Stevenson 'Senator, you have the vote of every thinking person!'
Stevenson called back 'That's not enough, madam, we need a majority!'
In October of 2007, Democratic presidential hopeful, Obama announced his new offensive strategy to distinguish policy difference between himself and his opponent and Democratic then-frontrunner Clinton.
In his announcement he stated that the notion that Clinton and himself were "holding hands and singing `Kumbaya'" on every issue was completely false.
I am loving the group hug here this morning :)
linda b NICE GOING about your representation at Democracyfest.
Left a note for you last thread about Gravel - he's not crazy, just goofy.
I agree, HQ SEND HER SOME TRAINING CLASSES DOWN HER WAY!
She's only been asking for over 2 years
Here's a cute joke for you seashell :)
A couple lived near the ocean and used to walk the beach a lot. One summer they noticed a girl who was at the beach almost every day. She
wasn't unusual, nor was the travel bag she carried, except for one thing; she would approach people who were sitting on the beach, glance around furtively, then speak to them.
Generally the people would respond negatively and she would wander off, but occasionally someone would nod and there would be a quick exchange of money and something she carried in her bag. The couple assumed that she was selling drugs and debated calling the cops, but since they didn't know for sure, they just continued to watch her.
After a couple of weeks the wife said, "Honey, have you ever noticed that she only goes up to people with boom boxes and other electronic
devices?"
He hadn't - and said so. Then she said, "Tomorrow I want you to get a
towel and our big Radio and go lie out on the beach. Then we can find
out what she's really doing."Well, the plan went off without a hitch and the wife was almost hopping up &down with anticipation when she saw the girl talk to her husband and then leave. The man then walked up the beach and met his wife at the road.
Well, Is she selling drugs?" she asked excitedly. No, she's not," he said, enjoying this probably more than he should have.
Well, what is it then? What does she do?" his wife fairly shrieked.
The man grinned and said, "She's a battery salesperson."
"Batteries?" cried the wife.
"Yes ....." he replied -
She sells C cells by the sea shore!"
Ronald Cloud from last thread: "What is she trying to prove? Can anyone imagine a freshman senator in her position remaining in the race. There is a reason she was so alarmed @ Bill Richardson endorsement....it's the beginning of her end."
Point of fact: Hillary Clinton is not the freshman Senator in this race.
I'm sure what they meant was she is the freshman Senator from NEW YORK.
The Clintons are using MI and FL to attack Obama....really low blow.
It's brilliant, Bill and Hillary. Turning the FL and MI fiascos into Obama's fault....

Gotta love it: Republican Science, lol!
Just to finish this discussion, Hillary is the Junior Senator from New York (Schumer is the Senior Senator) but she is in her Second term. Obama is in his first term.

In light of Tuzla-gate (catchy, no?), reporters are going over past statements by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, (and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois) to see if others don't stand more rigorous examination.
One that may get renewed scrutiny is a story she told “Women in Military Service” in 1994 -- that shortly after the end of the Vietnam war, she looked into joining the Marines.
In June 1994, Clinton told an organization trying to build a memorial for women who had served in the armed forces, that while living in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in 1975, “I decided that I was very interested in having some experience in serving in some capacity in the military. So I walked into our
mainefem - You are such a hoot. BTW, I loved the *kitty* from yesterday. From one kitty lover to another it was very cute.
Why isn't Jake Tapper looking into McCain's past statements? Why does this guy get a pass?
I will not criticize Senator Clinton - because she will be expected to stump for Senator Obama in some states where she has some clout, after Senator Obama earns the party nomination for President. If she does not fulfill her responsibility when that time arrives - well . . . . . . .
( How refreshing to be able to return to spelling President without a lower-case p and a capital R ). Farewell to the R(epublican)-Rated George W. Bush.
And, as always . . . . . . .
WASHINGTON
Maureen DowdWhile the cool cat’s away, the Hillary mice will play.
As Barack Obama was floating in the pool with his daughters the last few days in St. Thomas, some Clinton disciples were floating the idea of St. Hillary as his vice president.
She can’t win without him, said one Hillary adviser, and he can’t win without her.
They’re stuck with each other.
It’s one of my favorite movie formulas, driving the dynamics in such classics as “A Few Good Men,” “The Big Easy” and “Guys and Dolls”: Charming, glib guy spars and quarrels with no-nonsense, driven girl, until they team up in the last reel. He spices up her life, and she stiffens his spine. And soon they hear the pitter-patter of little superdelegate feet, who are thrilled not to be pulled in two directions anymore.
And everybody’s happy. Or are they?
A couple of weeks ago, when Hill and Bill mentioned the possibility of a joint ticket, it was an attempt to undermine Obama and urge voters and superdelegates to put Hillary on top; the implication was that this was the only way Democrats could have both their stars, and besides, it was her turn. The precocious boy wonder had plenty of time.
For the rest, clicky
OH NO!!!
I love it...Hillary wanted to join the Marines...The lies keep coming.
She and I are about the same age and she would be in her late 20's. I was discharged in late 1969 at the ripe old age of 22.
They should have signed her up. She would have enjoyed Granada, Panama, Lebanon and Gulf1. Maybe then she wouldn't be lieing about snipers.
She has moved from disgusting to the depths of pathetic.
She has as many mental problems as McCain. Because of her insecurity, she has to act tuff, change her name constantly, and tell heroic stories. Just what we need in the WH after 8 years of the worst POTUS in history.
I will not criticize Senator Clinton - because she will be expected to stump for Senator Obama in some states where she has some clout, after Senator Obama earns the party nomination for President. If she does not fulfill her responsibility when that time arrives - well . . . . . . .
David~ I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this to happen, in fact, I hope she doesn't ever stump for Barack. It would be a lose-lose consequence.
Many Muslims Turn to Home Schooling
...“I don’t want the behavior,” said Aya Ismael, a Muslim mother home-schooling four children near San Jose. “Little girls are walking around dressing like hoochies, cursing and swearing and showing disrespect toward their elders. In Islam we believe in respect and dignity and honor.”
Still, the subject of home schooling is a contentious one in various Muslim communities, with opponents arguing that Muslim children are better off staying in the system and, if need be, fighting for their rights.
Robina Asghar, a Muslim who does social work in Stockton, Calif., says the fact that her son was repeatedly branded a “terrorist” in school hallways sharpened his interest in civil rights and inspired a dream to become a lawyer. He now attends a Catholic high school.
“My son had a hard time in school, but every time something happened it was a learning moment for him,” Mrs. Asghar said. “He learned how to cope. A lot of people were discriminated against in this country, but the only thing that brings change is education.”
Many parents, however, would rather their children learn in a less difficult environment, and opt to keep them home....

IMO it is not one-size-fits-all issue. Each child and school is different and effects the decision every parent makes differently

Karen, I agree with that totally. I can't imagine that any good would come of her support FOR Obama after all her negativity against him personally.
Thank you Monica for the Kos link on the previous thread.
linda b Thank YOU for all the wonderful work you've been doing in VA. Iron Jawed Angeles is on my favorites list at facebook and myspace. Our local National Women's Political Caucus Chapter held a special viewing of the film a few years ago. We had a packed house. Our members were encouraged to invite young men and women. The young folks who attended were very moved. Several joined our organization that evening and have stayed very active. Some of those same young women are now in Leadership rolls.
DemocracyFest is going to be lots of fun this year. I hope they invite my friend with the NWPC to speak and have her table again. She has attended the last two years. The last time I spoke with her, she mentioned that she had not been contacted but was interested. I told her about your Women's group and the work you'll have been doing.
It's all been very unfortunate and was to be expected for quit sometime. I do agree with Joan In Florida.
Denise
I spoke very very fast and had a lisp when I was very small. The speech therapist had us say the phrase over and over during our classes. I was a very shy little girl. My Mother put me in the arts to bring me out of my shell. It worked. I became kind of a rebel in the '70s. I think rock and roll music had something to do with it too.
Senator Gravel is an interesting fellow. I think he's just been very honest. Alaska must be quit an adventurous place.
My hubby and I loved the show Northern Exposure. I liked to watch the moose that walked through town before and after every episode. We made up a moose dance in his honor.
Iron Jaw Angels
I saw it on the bus as I went with a friend to DC for the women's march a few year's ago.
I loved the movie, so touching and informative. I love Hillary Swank , what an actress.
I met my daughter at the march and we kinda got to see Howard there but he was surrounded by a large crowd. Maybe at the fest I can say hello. I know they keep him guarded. They did at the TBA conf. But I got to wave at him before he came out to speak. He gave me that cute smile and wave. Wonder what he thinks of all these people wanting to see him and speak to him.
I am really looking forward to Democracyfest. Never been. But I do know Rich is going to make up a list of local places to eat and all.
It will be fun to meet all these people I have "talked" to for so many years.
Scary too!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From Clinton's former Pastor:
""The Reverend Jeremiah Wright is an outstanding church leader whom I have heard speak a number of times," Snyder wrote. "He has served for decades as a profound voice for justice and inclusion in our society. To evaluate his dynamic ministry on the basis of two or three sound bites does a grave injustice to Dr. Wright, the members of his congregation, and the African-American church which has been the spiritual refuge of a people that has suffered from discrimination, disadvantage, and violence. Dr. Wright, a member of an integrated denomination, has been an agent of racial reconciliation while proclaiming perceptions and truths uncomfortable for some white people to hear. Those of us who are white Americans would do well to listen carefully to Dr. Wright rather than to use a few of his quotes to polarize."
In regards to this post.
THE END IS NEAR!!!
Join thousands of others in counting down the final days of the worst presidency ever! Here: http://www.backwardsbush.com/
There is a new thread. Live long and prosper.
Thanks, Denise, for the cute joke.
Deaniac makes good points that I've also thought about. BO needs to come out now and say that we're leaving Iraq, ASAP, lock, stock and repeating rifles. Then he needs to retract his statement that we have to "win the war in Afghan." Then he needs to retract his statement that he would go into (bomb) Iran with actionable intel and w/o permission from the sovereign state.
If he says this and if I believe that, I may consider registering as a dem and voting in the OR primary for him.
If he has the courage to talk about an even-handed approach in I/P, I'll register the day he says that. (he already alluded to that and then took it back by kissing facing with AIPAC)
If HC makes a "peace" statement, along the above lines, I'll vote for her.
Right now, the misspeaking, lies and stretching of the truth are coming from everywhere. They're politicians and can smell the power of the unitary executive.
****************************
S/O on the CM was talking about "grudge voting" - throwing your vote to green or Gravel or whomever if your candidate isn't the nominee.
I would suggest that when fear of either candiate is stronger and deeper than love of country, which McC will finish off, no doubt, leading perhaps to nuke war, than there's little hope, is there? And hate is not the opposite of love. The opposite of love is fear.
On a personal level, I'm not afraid of any of the 3 or how they govern. But the country as a whole should be very afraid of McC. Very. He'll blow up the world in a heartbeat.
Who's on the tickie with him? Condi? Huck?
At the very least, guys, think of your grandbabies if McC wins.
Oh well. Off to run errands and then paint.
I am really looking forward to Democracyfest. Never been. But I do know Rich is going to make up a list of local places to eat and all.
I've started, but I'm going to put off creating the final list until the last minute, since it's an area where lots of new places are opening. Not a lot in walking distance, but a lot in a very short drive. I have promised Jessica to include a list of places that deliver! And for those who like to grocery shop there's a Wegman's (upstate New Yorkers will know what that is).
