This is What I Call Civic Engagement

Agence France-Presse via Yahoo! reports on Tshewang Dema, a citizen of Bhutan who walked over 600 km to vote in her country's first Democratic elections:

The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan may lay claim to having the world's most enthusiastic voter -- a 65-year-old woman who walked 600 kilometres (380 miles) to cast her ballot.

...

People were allowed to vote only in the place of their birth and thousands headed to remote villages to take part in the country's first parliamentary elections ending absolute rule by the Wangchuck dynasty.

Death of the Bees: GMO Crops and the Decline of Bee Colonies in North America

Brit Amos
Global Resource
March 26, 2008

‘Commercial beehives pollinate over a third of [North}America’s crops and that web of nourishment encompasses everything from fruits like peaches, apples, cherries, strawberries and more, to nuts like California almonds, 90 percent of which are helped along by the honeybees. Without this pollination, you could kiss those crops goodbye, to say nothing of the honey bees produce or the flowers they also fertilize’.1

This essay will discuss the arguments and seriousness that affects the massive deaths and the decline of Bee colonies in North America. As well, it will shed light on a worldwide hunger issue that will have an economical and ecological impact in the very near future.

There are many reasons given to the decline in Bees, but one argument that matters most is the use of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) and Terminator seeds that are presently being endorsed by governments and forcefully utilized as our primary agricultural needs of survival. I will argue what is publicized and covered by the media is in actuality, masking the real problems of Terminator seeds and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s).

Terminator seeds; genetically produced and distributed by powerful multinational lobbies manipulate government and agricultural policy to encompass their agenda of dominance in the agricultural industry. American conglomerates such as Monsanto, Pioneer Seeds, and others, have created seeds that do not reproduce (whereas these seeds have a life span of the crop chosen). The sterilizing of the plant by the means of sterilizing the flower pollen genetically altered and mutated for production in the agricultural industry. Logic states that if the flower pollen is sterile, bees are potentially going malnourished and dying of illness due to the lack of nutrients and the interruption of the of the digestive capacity of what they feed on through the summer and over the winter hibernation process.

I will argue that the media’s publications distract the civil population of the true cause of the Colony Collapse of Bees. As such, outlined are four major arguments in which the conglomerates of GMO’s and terminator seeds use to redirect public awareness concerning the truth about the demise of the bees. These arguments include Varroa mites, parasites, cell phones, and terminator seeds

Companies Try To Cover-Up Move To Watch Consumers Via TV’s

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Minority Report will meet Orwell’s telescreens if telecommunications giants like Comcast and Microsoft have their way.

Comcast has denied that it is developing camera devices built in to cable boxes that monitor consumers as they enter the room, despite the fact that Vice-President Gerard Kunkel admitted to a journalist that such a move would represent a "holy grail," and rival companies like TiVo and Microsoft have already filed patents for similar technology.

A firestorm of controversy erupted last week after industry website newteevee.com carried an article by Chris Albrecht which revealed that Comcast was, "experimenting with different camera technologies built into devices so it can know who’s in your living room".

How did Albrecht know? Because Comcast’s senior VP of user experience Gerard Kunkel told him during the Digital Living Room conference held in San Francisco

ABC Smears Scientist For Questioning Global Warming “Consensus”

Steve Watson
Infowars.net
Monday, March 24, 2008

Global Warming Denier: Fraud or ‘Realist’? is the headline ABC News uses to attack Princeton-trained physicist Fred Singer who dares to challenge the mainstream scientific "consensus" on the causes of climate change.

In a blatantly one sided hatchet job, ABC News attempts to demonize Singer and by proxy any other scientist who questions "broad scientific understanding" that climate change is being vastly hastened by man made carbon emissions.

Singer holds a degree in Electrical engineering from Ohio State University and a PhD in Physics from Princeton University.

That did not stop ABC from ignoring any scientific points Singer made in favor of simply attacking his credibility.

In an accompanying video, the network quote an environmental activist from the left-wing organization Greenpeace to attack Singer:

“Kert Davies, an environmental activist, says Singer is connected to a whole web of organizations, many funded by oil and coal companies, that have spent millions trying to convince the public there’s a scientific debate about global warming – slowing down government action on a phenomenon that could lead to storms, droughts, famines, massive refugee movements and even wars,”

"Singer insists he is not on the payroll of the energy industry, but admits he once accepted an unsolicited check from Exxon for $10,000." The article also states.

As we have consistently pointed out, energy companies stand to gain from inflated prices caused by the fear of global warming and their representatives have been actively pushing the man made global warming mantra.

I've taken to watching Dan Abrams "Verdict" right after Keith.  His coverage is much more even-handed.

So the BO campaign itself was behind Passportgate.  ROFL  (things Keithie, who has lost all objectivity won't tell us).

And apparently BO was not a law Professor in Chicago, tho he alluded to himself as one.

Wow! That voting law reads like something out of ancient Egyptian text. And we have to remind folks over and over and over again to simply mail in their ballots or just show up at the poll down the street for a event that happens only a couple of days each year? Good grief, our society is so self-adsorbed and distracted these days from what is really important that we even want to be able to vote online.

Avarice is not a virtue.

Thanks for posting the article on the melting ice shelf.  Because of the rising sea level small villages here is AK are slipping into the sea.  So sad.  I feel so bad for the people in those villages.  Especially for the elderly who have lived their entire lives there.

Even with this happening there are people here in AK who do not believe global warming is real.

Didn't miss the msg at all.  I don't know why it's not up on his website..it's playing here.

Of course I know his campaign didn't make it.  That's not the point now, is it?  The point is to point at something and let people infer what they want.  Of course, the ad could have been called something else...like maybe "A sexy political ad."  LOL

On "Verdict" there were endless clips of HC hugging the little girl in Bosnia...and then there was something amazing....a one or two second clip of her descending from the copter and starting to walk away and then suddenly and quickly putting her hands up to her ears.

Was that to mute the sound of the copter (wouldn't it have been shut off beforehand) ?  Maybe it was cold and her ears were freezing?

Just paying attention and asking.  I really haven't been following the news all that closely lately since it's not about anything that has much substance.  Keith is starting to foam a bit at the mouth and I still like him.

That said, HC has her own scary "Family" members.

Looks like one of the three will take the oath as a *war prez.*  I'm so comforted.

Paine, I love keithie and I see how he's lost objectivity.  He hasn't flipped me anywhere.  What some peeps don't get is that I really don't care right now who gets the nod since I think both will be war presidents (all 3).  That means I'm not emotionally involved in "my" candidate winning since I don't have a candidate who's running.

The thing about BO being a Prof was discussed on "Verdict." Ya had to be there.  Check the website.

Both campaigns are getting nasty, not just hers.  We need a little more objectivity here and less *standing by my man* stuff.  That's why I'm now also watching "Verdict."

It's a waste of my time prolly, since I'll vote for the nominee no matter who it is.  Handing it to McC is unthinkable for many reasons, not the least of which is THE SUPREME COURT.

Law students gave Obama big thumbs-up 'I LOVED TEACHING' | Consistently rated one of top instructors at U. of C.

December 18, 2007 if (SITELIFE_ENABLED == true){ gSiteLife.Recommend("ExternalResource", "701490,CST-NWS-obamaprof18", "http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/obama/701490,CST-NWS-obamaprof18.article"); }//if true Recommend
BY ABDON M. PALLASCH Political Reporter/apallasch@suntimes.com

White House hopeful Barack Obama could have given it all up for the gentler life of a law professor.

A Sun-Times review of student evaluations from Obama's 10 years of teaching part-time at the University of Chicago Law School shows that students almost always rated Obama as one of their top instructors -- except for one quarter in 1997.

» Click to enlarge image Barack Obama was a highly rated teacher at the University of Chicago Law School.
(Courtesy)

"Those are tremendous ratings, especially for someone who had a day job," Professor Cass Sunstein said. "We wanted him to join the faculty full-time at various different junctures. That's not a trivial fact. . . . If we want to hire someone, the faculty has to think they're tremendous. But he liked political life."

While a state senator, Obama held classes early on Monday and late on Friday during legislative sessions, running right through the school's popular Friday evening wine-and-cheese hour. Obama was so popular, students signed up for his class anyway.

"We'd be in class and get messages that he would come in 45 minutes late and everyone would wait for him," said former student Andrew Janis, now a New York lawyer.

"I loved teaching," Obama told the Sun-Times. "But when the opportunity came [to run for U.S. Senate] I took it. I think some of the public speaking skills I developed in the classroom -- stay on your toes; don't make my answers too long -- I'm using on the campaign trail."

Professor David Straus, the only teacher with higher ratings than Obama in his last year at the school, said, "The students thought he was great. He thought about things in unconventional ways."

Professors at the law school -- which is ranked among the country's best -- employ the "Socratic" teaching method of Professor Kingsfield from "The Paper Chase," cold-calling students to catch them off guard. Obama ditched that approach for a more informal conversation with students.

"Some professors are just kind of going through the motions with you," Janis said. "He actually seemed to take everyone's point of view seriously."

Obama's final exams drew from topical controversies such as cloning and single-sex public schools.

The student evaluations of Obama that remain at the school library (some are missing) are overwhelmingly positive. A reporter was unable to find the four students who said they would not recommend Obama's class to another student.

Some Obama critics say because he had the title of "senior lecturer" he should not call himself "professor." U. of C. professors said Obama -- who practiced civil rights law for a time and stopped teaching in 2003 -- could have joined their ranks whenever he wanted.

For the rest:

John O. Brennan, president and CEO of the Analysis Corp., advises the Illinois Democrat on foreign policy and intelligence issues, the source said.

Brennan briefed the media on behalf of the campaign this month.

The executive is a former senior CIA official and former interim director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

He contributed $2,300 to the Obama campaign in January.

When asked about the contribution, a State Department official told CNN's Zain Verjee, "We ethically awarded contracts. Political affiliation is not one of the factors that we check."

On Friday, the department revealed that Obama's passport file was improperly accessed three times this year, and the security of passport files of the two other major presidential candidates -- Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican John McCain -- had also been breached.

Three contract employees are accused in the wrongdoing, including the one who works for Analysis Corp. and who was disciplined. That contract employee accessed McCain's file in addition to Obama's. None of the contract employees was identified.

The other two contract employees worked for Stanley Inc. They were fired.

So the genealogists have done their work and it proves (disquietingly) that regardless of how diverse this country gets, power still consolidates along bloodlines.

Obama is a distant cousin of the Bushes, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Harry S. Truman and James Madison, as well as Dick Cheney and Sir Winston Churchill.

I guess this means that Bush and Cheney are also distant cousins of each other.

McCain is a cousin of Laura Bush's.

Hillary is a cousin of the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker Bowles Windsor.

Wasn't Howard's grandmother in Bush's grandmother's wedding party, or the other way around?

Sheesh.
