Dean Democratic Club of Silicon Valley Bake Sale to Benefit Vets!

Written by: DFA Staff on Mar 24, 2008 3:15 PM

(Editor's Note: This post was written by Carolyn Curtis of the Dean Democratic Club of Silicon Valley - Danny, Communications Director)

First, kudos to DFA for conceiving this idea, based on the phrase from another misbegotten war: "what if the Pentagon had to have bake sales to raise money & the schools had all the money they needed?" The idea was to bring the domestic cost of the war home, raise money with a bake sale, and give the proceeds to local disabled veterans. The Dean Democratic Club of Silicon Valley carried this through on Sunday March 16, setting up about 8:30am at a very popular local farmer's market, starting out with 3 small tables & a chair loaded with cinnamon rolls, brownies made with Belgian chocolate, oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, mocha chocolate chip cookies, gingersnaps, blondies, chocolate cupcakes decorated for St Patrick's Day, "heck of a job" brownies, and a whole pistachio cake--thanks to our wonderful bakers Marcene, Syroun, Nan, Karen, Mary, & Carolyn! Spandan, Don, Carolyn, Mary, & Karen were the friendly faces at the table, making the sales and talking with a lot of people. The best part was all the thank-yous we got for doing this, including from several veterans. We gave out Charlie Brown's brochure to people who really seemed interested, plus several of our club brochures & DFA literature.

Besides delighted customers, lots of people donated, saying "don't need the calories but I'd like to donate" or "keep the change." We sold out of everything except the last 10 cupcakes, which we brought to the Obama HQ (we endorsed him last month), where they were much appreciated.

A reporter from the Palo Alto Daily was with us for about an hour starting around 11, & the photographer came about 12:30. This was probably because Marcene on her own hook sent out publicity. Here's the story, which has nice pictures of Spandan: http://www.paloaltodailynews.com/article/2008-3-17-bake-sale, tho a few errors--they missed our club name, though we gave them our brochure (it was too windy for our club banner), but it was good publicity for DFA!

The final tally: $214 in sales + $66 in donations = $280 (we added $2.50 to make it come out even), which buys 14 twenty-dollar phone cards. Mary will buy these & deliver them to the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital spinal cord unit this week. These phone cards are a club tradition: we always have a donation jar out for this at our holiday party & our annual June picnic, with a match from the club treasury.

This sale got the point across, benefitted some local veterans, and was fun besides. At last night's working meeting we discussed holding another one of these, in San Jose, with the Out of Iraq task force to organize it.

No, Fox, i neither misspoke nor lied.  A figment of the imagination is a designation that the human brain invents.

Yes, one that is not real, not in existence, pretend.  That is what imaginary means.  They are real whether you have a document  or deed, Monica, you know they are real and your choice of words was no more an accident than Bill Clintons.  You just can't stand the fact that bad people are actually out there spoiling your imaginary claim that real troops are not needed to kill each and every one of them.  They are there and their deaths should be the goal, and anything we can do to hasten is a positive step in civilization.  There have always been evil people trying to attack civilization and there have at most time honorable people trying to stop them.  You are merely a defender  of those that, if given the chance, would kill you and everyone your know and would not hesitate to do so.  Ask those families in NY and Washington DC.  You should be thankfull there are so many brave americans you despise, including those evil air force personnel, that are protecting you at this very minute.  They don't ask for your thanks, but a little less derision directed at them would at least be a start.

"It's our land. Nobody among our sons and grandsons will accept Israel as a legal state...Israel is a foreign body. Not in this generation, not in the next generation, will we accept it here."
"We do not recognize the Israeli enemy, nor his right to be our neighbor, nor to stay [on the land], nor his ownership of any inch of land...Our principles are clear: Palestine is a land of Waqf [Islamic trust], which can not be given up."

-- Hamas leader Dr. Mahmoud Zahar

Just because this guy says so doesn't make it written in stone for the future. But Israeli/US policy has certainly helped make it a fact of the present.
------------------

Usually future is been written in stones not by words but by blood.
It’s also interesting to note that Hamas leader above is talking the “Israel...state” not the “Jewish people”. It looks like those Islamo-fascists enemies distinguish quite well between both contrary to many of us, “progressives”..., lol.

And what is that, the land of “trust”, though “Islamic” for the start, what is this land is all about?

Things got heated on "The View" this morning as the ladies discussed race and racism...

click X

[...]

The segment, excerpted below, gives a glimpse into how heated the discussion became: Whoopi declared, "This is a racist country," and told Elisabeth that she, like Obama's grandmother, would be scared if she saw six young black men standing on a corner. Elisabeth, for her part, denied that this would alarm her and demanded (in harsh tones and with exaggerated hand gestures) that someone "write [her] the rules on racism."

========================

Yes, Fox, we know better than you they exist because we acknowledge our part in inadvertantly creating them. They are an unexpected by-product of our foreign policy.

They are not the same as traditional foes, not only in how they fight, by in their objectives and motivations. Unlike Hitler and the Stalin, their objective is not one of acquiring physical boundaries, but of spiritual boundaries.

But Al Qaeda is becoming a cliche, a catch all phrase for any moslem who disagree with us. That kind of knee-jerk sensationalism is very ignorant and wrong, which is why we have been losing in Iraq from the day we landed.

Whatever you POV, it would more easily respected if you didn't use a NeoCon fabricated term such as "Islamo-fascist" to express it.

Based on the actions of the Israeli and US govts in the region, it is just as easy to toss around terms like Zio-fascists and Ameri-fascists.

But those who use abuse the term fascist would do well to learn the real meaning of fascism

====================

They actually use "Zionists" even more than "Israel" IMO

Ever since Azmi Bishara, an Arab (Palestinian) Knesset member called for Israel's reinvention from "a Jewish State" to a "state of all its citizens," he's been targeted as being a traitor to Israel.

MK Azmi Bishara left Jordan on Tuesday for a tour of Europe. Balad sources have stated he will visit Spain and France and participate in international conferences. He will then travel to a conference in Bahrain, and then possibly to India...

Saturday, April 28, 2007   Israeli politicians accuse Azmi Bishara of Treason From Ma'an News Agency Bethlehem - Ma'an - Right-wing Israeli members of the Knesset have stepped up their accusations against Azmi Bishara, a former Arab Palestinian member of the Knesset, who resigned earlier this week and is currently facing charges in Israel of "collaboration with the enemy" and money laundering.

'Trojan horse'

"The suspicions against Bishara prove that Trojan horses, a fifth column, have infiltrated the Knesset. He must be captured, wherever he hides, and brought to justice in Israel," said the Israeli National Religious Party chairman and member of the Knesset, Zevulun Orlev, on Thursday, according to reports on the website of the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth.http://peacepalestine.blogspot.com/2007/04/israeli-politicians-accuse-azmi-bishara.html

The "fifth column" refers to the 1/5 of the Israeli population that is Arab (Palestian) also referred to as "the enemy within" - while the Arab citizens are very law abiding (they have to be like blacks had to be down south during Jim Crow) they are often unjustly accused by the right wing of aiding or encouraging terrorist activities

HQ, please explain why you removed the posts.
from previous thread, nmbr60

Yes, I also would like to have an answer to that question.

It seems like there is an infight discusssion going on at HQ of what to do with the blog. How to manage it. The purpose of the blog. What goes and what doesn't.
Depending who is in 'charge' of the blog rules and enforcements are up to that person.

This blog has been in excistance for 5 years. And we have seen lots of changes.
Of personnel and software.

And the only thing that ever pissed me off in regards to BFA was the removal of some of JC's posts.

Again, as far as I'm concerned the problem is with the uncertainty about the purpose of this blog that hampers it's death or life.

Clarity of purpose.

Why are we here? Because we like to listen to outrageous, reasonable, emotional, different idears.

Well, of course, some are here to propagate their courses.

We need all of them to communicate with all of us.

So, what are the rules of communication?

Will Joe Lieberman be John McCain’s Assisted Living Caretaker and Vice-President as They Bomb Iran?

Mark Karlin
BuzzFlash
March 22, 2008

In case you’ve been so caught up in the battle royale of the Democratic primaries, Joe Lieberman has been escorting John McCain around Iraq and Israel, acting as his assisted living caretaker.

Not only has Lieberman once or twice bailed McCain out of his confusion between Sunnis and Shiites, he most recently saved McCain from his equating the Jewish Holiday of Purim with Halloween while jaunting around Israel.

In my younger days, I played the role of Mordechai in a youthful Synagogue Purim play. Mordechai helps save the Jews from the evil plot of Haman to have them destroyed by the Persians of ancient times. The key heroine is Queen Esther who persuades her husband, King Ahasuerus, to assist in keeping the Jews from being annihilated by Haman’s forces. As a result, the Jews survive a potential Holocaust and Purim is celebrated with the reading of the Book of Esther, or as it has come to be called in the vernacular, “the whole Megillah.”

From the Palo Alto Daily story....

Along with Carolyn Curtis, Chakrabarti and Porter have been with DFA since it started in 2003 as Dean for America. The local Palo Alto chapter has about 125 paying members. Having originally supported John Edwards for president, the group has since joined the ranks of Barack Obama's campaign.

Wow, 125 members - that's fantastic! I have to mention that Carolyn is a Chicago native and I just know all of that organizing "back east" gave her the experience to become such a great leader in our neck o' the woods. The whole group is outstanding.

Of course, so is SMCDFA (San Mateo County) who has many events of their own throughout the year. Next meeting is Wednesday, April 2 :)

Long but important to those of us that want to see less money, time and energy spent on a weed that grows naturally on earth..

Breaking News: NORML Teams Up with Rep. Barney Frank To Introduce Federal Decriminalization Legislation

NORML is pleased to announce that it has partnered with our longtime ally, Democratic Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, to introduce legislation in the House of Representatives that would strip the federal government of its authority to arrest responsible cannabis consumers. The bill, referred to by Frank as the 'Make Room for Serious Criminals Act,' is the first federal cannabis decriminalization bill introduced in Congress in 24 years.

“It's time for the politicians to catch up with the public on this [issue],” Frank said Friday during an appearance on the nationally syndicated television program 'Real Time with Bill Maher,' in which he announced the imminent introduction of the measure.

As drafted, Frank's proposal would eliminate all federal penalties prohibiting the personal use and possession of up to 100 grams (3 1/2 ounces) of marijuana. Under this measure (based on the recommendations of the 1972 National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse, also known as the Shafer Commission), adults who consume cannabis would no longer face arrest, prison, or even the threat of a civil fine. In addition, this bill would eliminate all penalties prohibiting the not-for-profit transfers of up to one ounce of cannabis between adults. In short, for the first time since 1937, the possession, use, and non-profit transfer of marijuana by adults would be legal under federal law!

Marijuana decriminalization currently enjoys support from the majority of Americans. According to a recent CNN/Time Magazine poll, 76% of US citizens favor a cannabis policy that does not place responsible adult cannabis consumers at risk of arrest and prosecution. Nonetheless, nearly 830,000 Americans were arrested on marijuana charges this year, 89% of which were for personal possession.

Currently, twelve states, representing over a third of Americans - Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Oregon, along with numerous major cities such as Seattle, Milwaukee, Madison, and Ann Arbor -- have enacted various forms of marijuana decriminalization, replacing criminal sanctions with the imposition of fine-only penalties for minor pot violators. Similar proposals have passed this year in the House in New Hampshire and the Senate in Vermont, and Massachusetts will be voting on a similar initiative this November.

NORML is pleased to be leading the effort for sensible cannabis law reform at the federal level. With your support, we look forward to ending the obsolete and destructive practice of arresting responsible adult cannabis consumers.

Allen St. Pierre

Had a long committee meeting tonight as we had voted at a previous meeting to allow Vt. Progressive gubernatorial candidate Anthony Pollina to have a dialog with us. He's running as a Progressive and doing a write-in campaign for the Dem. ticket saying the two parties should work together with the main objective being to get Republican Governor Douglas out. I asked if our Dem. candidate defeated him soundly in the primary if he would stop campaigning and support our candidate...he said he'd just campaign harder...that turned off this progressive Democrat...guess supporting each other is a one way street for him.

I've noticed some comments recently of blogger attacking blogger beyond what I would say is debate.

rich^kolker had a post after last years DemFest that I remembered and it took me a minute to find it but Susan hits the nail on the head upthread...

Subway commented on another thread (paraphrasing) that he was surprised how warmly I greeted him, given we've disagreed here on several things (and people :-)).

Everyone I've ever met in person, who I first met on the blog, I've enjoyed meeting. They're all good people. Here we disagree about issues and politics and strategy and tactics. Debate is a good thing. Howard asked us in 2003 to institute "The Great American Conversation." I never take debate personally. I hope nobody else does here either. So long as the debate remains about things and doesn't degenerate into ad hominem (and we're pretty good about that) that should remain.

Another reason to go to Demfest --people you know AS people are hard to treat badly on the blog.

[nearly 830,000 Americans were arrested on marijuana charges this year, 89% of which were for personal possession.]

I got my best political grassroots lessons fighting the good fight for legalization, not decriminalization. My organization held the opinion that NORML was OK, but they did not ask for enough. We held fast to the concept that pot is just a plant and its inevitable legalization will drastically lower the crime rate, bolster the ag economy, boost ice cream and enchilada sales, and lead to interesting purple ribbon judging sessions at the county fair. Nebraska decriminalized weed in in '76 as a compromise.
