From Gov Bill Richardson to his supporters

Dear Kevin,

During the last year, I have shared with you my vision and hopes for this nation as we look to repair the damage of the last seven years. And you have shared your support, your ideas and your encouragement to my campaign. We have been through a lot together and that is why I wanted to tell you that, after careful and thoughtful deliberation, I have made a decision to endorse Barack Obama for President.

We are blessed to have two great American leaders and great Democrats running for President. My affection and admiration for Hillary Clinton and President Bill Clinton will never waver. It is time, however, for Democrats to stop fighting amongst ourselves and to prepare for the tough fight we will face against John McCain in the fall. The 1990's were a decade of peace and prosperity because of the competent and enlightened leadership of the Clinton administration, but it is now time for a new generation of leadership to lead America forward. Barack Obama will be a historic and a great President, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad.

Earlier this week, Senator Barack Obama gave an historic speech. that addressed the issue of race with the eloquence, sincerity, and optimism we have come to expect of him. He inspired us by reminding us of the awesome potential residing in our own responsibility. He asked us to rise above our racially divided past, and to seize the opportunity to carry forward the work of many patriots of all races, who struggled and died to bring us together.

As a Hispanic, I was particularly touched by his words. I have been troubled by the demonization of immigrants--specifically Hispanics-- by too many in this country. Hate crimes against Hispanics are rising as a direct result and now, in tough economic times, people look for scapegoats and I fear that people will continue to exploit our racial differences--and place blame on others not like them . We all know the real culprit -- the disastrous economic policies of the Bush Administration!

Senator Obama has started a discussion in this country long overdue and rejects the politics of pitting race against race. He understands clearly that only by bringing people together, only by bridging our differences can we all succeed together as Americans.

His words are those of a courageous, thoughtful and inspiring leader, who understands that a house divided against itself cannot stand. And, after nearly eight years of George W. Bush, we desperately need such a leader.

To reverse the disastrous policies of the last seven years, rebuild our economy, address the housing and mortgage crisis, bring our troops home from Iraq and restore America's international standing, we need a President who can bring us together as a nation so we can confront our urgent challenges at home and abroad.

During the past year, I got to know Senator Obama as we campaigned against each other for the Presidency, and I felt a kinship with him because we both grew up between words, in a sense, living both abroad and here in America. In part because of these experiences, Barack and I share a deep sense of our nation's special responsibilities in the world.

So, once again, thank you for all you have done for me and my campaign. I wanted to make sure you understood my reasons for my endorsement of Senator Obama. I know that you, no matter what your choice, will do so with the best interests of this nation, in your heart.

Sincerely,

Bill Richardson

The driver's license issue could have been one factor in Richardson's endorsement of Obama.  NM allows anyone to get a driver's license, and that means a state ID.  As Richardson said in the debates, this is a public safety issue.  The driver's licenses prevent auto theft and enable the police to maintain safer neighborhoods.  This was an important factor in making downtown Albuquerque safer.  Also, a deserted wife with six children or an elderly person in poverty can walk into a food bank that receives federal aid and get food with a state ID.  If the drivers' licenses were rescinded people wouldn't be able to go to a charity and get food, and the police couldn't maintain the basic safety of a neighborhood.   As you remember in the debates, HRC rejected the idea of the licenses, and Obama acknowledged the public safety issue.  Richardson could have been thinking about how much it would endanger the ability of NM to keep people fed and safe if the licenses were repealed.  He doesn't really need anything more for himself, and I think he was thinking about the people in his state.  In his speech he asked people not to scapegoat immigrants, and the license issue is an example.

Schwarzenegger drops parks appointees

The governor doesn't reappoint his brother-in-law, Bobby Shriver, and fellow actor Clint Eastwood after they opposed a toll road plan.

By Michael Rothfeld, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

March 21, 2008

SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has dropped his brother-in-law, Bobby Shriver, and fellow action hero Clint Eastwood from the state parks commission after their vigorous opposition helped derail a plan for a toll road through San Onofre State Beach in San Diego County.

The decision not to renew the commissioners' terms, which expired last week, surprised observers and sent a strong signal that the governor expects loyalty from political appointees. ...full article: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-...

"This is a warning shot from the governor's office to all of his appointees: Do what I say, no matter how stupid it is," said Joel Reynolds, a senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council in Los Angeles. "And I know of no project more destructive to the California coast than this toll road project."

Shriver, a Santa Monica City Council member and environmentalist who is the brother of California First Lady Maria Shriver, said he received a telephone call Monday from an aide to the governor saying he would not be reappointed.

Shriver and Eastwood had been appointed to the State Park and Recreation Commission under former Gov. Gray Davis and were previously reappointed by Schwarzenegger. A 60-day extension of their terms expired last week.

In an interview, Shriver said he and Eastwood had sought to remain on the board, where they were chairman and vice chairman, respectively, and that their removal would have "a chilling effect" on political appointees.

mary vb, I am getting more and more impressed with Kid Oakland's diaries.  He is a good writer and he is usually spot on.  Plus, he's a Deaniac, of course.

Richardson must have read Obama's first book. The first hundred pages or so is about adjusting to a world with one parent that doesn't look like the Beaver Cleaver family. He alluded to that in his speech.

Maine Eagle Cam (& eggs) for Easter would be cool.

It's a tad "blustery" in the nesting area, but Mama Eagle has been "rocking" (a good sign).

Last year, there was too much water/flooding @the Down East nest site.

I'd go the 22nd Amendment one better. I wish we had an anti-nepotism law that would disallow presidential runs by a spouse, parent, child or sibling of a president.

Yes, that would have meant Bobby and Teddy Kennedy wouldn't have been able to run. That would have been fine with me. Because if we don't watch our step we will find ourselves electing members of the same few rich and connected families over and over, until they intermarry and we decide royalty is just easier than all these election campaigns.

No to nepotism, no to ruling dynasties. Too much talent here to need to stoop to this.

Mayur Pahilajani - AHN News Writer

Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - Four United States soldiers were killed in Iraq within two days, pushing up the death toll of the fallen security personnel close to 4,000 on Saturday since the March 2003.

A roadside bombing hit a U.S. patrol vehicle in north-west of Baghdad on Saturday, killing three American security troops as well as two Iraqi civilians, the military said in its latest report.

The U.S. military has also said that another soldier died from injuries sustained in a rocket or mortar attack south of Baghdad on Friday.

The latest death toll raised the total number of American troops dead to 3,996, since the war started five years ago.

Meanwhile, the death casualties of Iraqi civilians have reached around 90,000 since March 2003, according to Iraq Body Count, the campaign group, the BBC News reported.

However, the number can be more than the recorded figures as many deaths may have gone unreported.
