Dean Statement on Florida and Michigan
Washington, DC - Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement on Florida and Michigan:"We're glad to hear that the Governors of Michigan and Florida are willing to lend their weight to help resolve this issue. As we've said all along, we strongly encourage the Michigan and Florida state parties to follow the rules, so today's public overtures are good news. The rules, which were agreed to by the full DNC including representatives from Florida and Michigan over 18 months ago, allow for two options. First, either state can choose to resubmit a plan and run a party process to select delegates to the convention; second, they can wait until this summer and appeal to the Convention Credentials Committee, which determines and resolves any outstanding questions about the seating of delegates. We look forward to receiving their proposals should they decide to submit new delegate selection plans and will review those plans at that time. The Democratic Nominee will be determined in accordance with party rules, and out of respect for the presidential campaigns and the states that did not violate party rules, we are not going to change the rules in the middle of the game.
"Through all the speculation, we should also remember the overwhelming enthusiasm and turnout that we have already seen, and respect the voters of the ten states who have yet to have their say.
"As we head towards November, our nominee must have the united support of a strong Democratic Party that's ready to fight and ready to beat John McCain. After seven years of Republican rule, I am confident that we will elect a Democratic president who will fight for America's families in the White House. Now we must hear from the voters in twelve states and territories who have yet to make their voices heard."

PMO: Officials only got briefing from Obama campaign
The Canadian Press
March 7, 2008 at 5:04 PM EST
OTTAWA — Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton never gave Canada any secret assurances about the future of NAFTA such as those allegedly offered by Barack Obama's campaign, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office said Friday.
With the NAFTA affair swirling over the U.S. election and Canadian officials skittish about saying anything else that might influence the race, it took the PMO two days to deliver the information.
After being asked whether Canadian officials asked for — or received — any briefings from a Clinton campaign representative outlining her plans on NAFTA, a spokeswoman for the prime minister offered a response Friday.
"The answer is no, they did not," said Harper spokeswoman Sandra Buckler.

After listening to all the pundits on Newshour and Washington Week talk about how to fix the Michigan/Florida delegate situation...
Once and for all, listen up people! There will be no re-do in Michigan! Here's what Gov. Jennifer Granholm said yesterday...
"I haven't had a call from Warren Buffet yet saying that he's willing to fund it. And he'd have to do us and Florida. It's a big ticket item so I'm not at all certain that that's where it's going to end up."
Howdy :-)
Howard and the 50-state strategy are number one.
Thanks for the post, Susan.
Had a great trip to IA w/ kid3. Will be in and out tonight...
Paine, you have a message.

So, let me get this straight.
Speaking the truth to power forces you to resign?
Spreading mistruths keeps you in power?
Howard Dean is first.
The test is: Will the rules be followed or will they be modified midgame?

From the Baltimore Sun:
Before the Casper, Wyoming town hall, Obama stopped at Johnny J's Diner in Casper to pose for photos and shake a few dozen hands.
"Sorry to cause a ruckus," he said as he walked in. "I was just coming in to get a burger."
Obama did indeed order a burger (with cheese) and a vanilla shake. He toyed with the idea of a slice of pie, too, but passed.
If I were built like him I would have had the pie! Wonder what kind it was..... :)
wow watching cnn tonite, it was a choice between bashing obama or howard dean.t
the ladies from mi and fl were lying through their teeth. you knew the rules. one lady said, from mi, that they were just testing the rules. but you lost.

Samantha Powers is hot.
Denise did you get the post about the biocide sprays, chem trails, in the bay area?
Hillary Clinton just opened a big can of worms.
Seeking to stay on the offensive against Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton today attacked him for saying one thing to Americans and another thing to foreigners. Her evidence? Comments about Obama's Iraq withdrawal plan made by Samantha Powers (also of Monster-gate), who has now resigned from her unpaid role as an informal adviser to Barack Obama's campaign.
Obviously, Clinton's campaign must be pretty desperate to be attacking the unofficial comments of an informal unpaid adviser (who has now resigned).
But the real story is that her decision to make contacts between campaign advisers and foreign governments an issue could boomerang something fierce.
I'll give you just three examples: her campaign's role on NAFTA-gate, her chief strategist Mark Penn's representation of sovereign wealth funds from the United Arab Emirates, and her husband's financial ties to not only the UAE, but also Frank Giustra and what that would mean for U.S. relations with Kazakhstan in a third Clinton administration.

Fred - Ms. Power is also incredibly bright. I just wish she hadn't said what she said.
Michigan could do a head count allocation at the March 31st Conventions and it wouldn't cost a cent.
Plus what does a Governor have to do with Party Rules anyway?

Fred yes i did see it. I grew up in an industrial part of Chicago next to the Sanitary District and Argo Corn Starch plant. I was doomed since I was a kid.
They also sprayed for skeeters there. But I know it's not about me and I do know that this issue is not escaping the many that are against it. I'm sure they will prevail.
The weird thing is - I still got bit back home, but in my 12 years of living here, I not once ever got bothered by any kind of skeeter, fly or other such creature. But I do enjoy the beautiful butterflies.
there are no "do overs" in politics. the rules are the rules.
OK no more playing blog ouija anymore, ok?
And Tom, we got the point. Stop so Phil doesn't have to post the rules anymore (which were not posted when Linda transgressed, but I digress)
Linda wrote "Just a pop in to clear up some tails that started floating around."
Interesting article. The following is an excerpt:
"The revelations about Mr. Brodie's conversation with CTV have left a key unanswered question that holds some implications for the U.S. election.
"Sources who overheard that conversation say he specifically mentioned that Canadian diplomats did get assurances from the Clinton camp — and he never raised Mr. Obama's name.
"That begs the question: why was Ms. Clinton's name raised at all?
"Mr. Brodie does not deny downplaying the Democrats' anti-NAFTA rhetoric in a conversation with CTV, but he says he cannot recall mentioning any specific presidential candidate."
Apparently, Brodie can't recall mentioning the specific presidential candidate that sources who overheard the conversation recall him mentioning specifically.
Obama won Texas
Why is the press too lazy to correctly report that all state contests are being held within the Party Delegate Selection Rules? Each State has "unpledged" delegates as part of that plan. (the so called Super Delegates); and as well each state is conducting contests in all kinds of different but fair ways of allocating "pledged" delegates so that they reflect proportional support of those citizens who align themselves with the Democratic Party for the various candidates for President on the Democratic Party ticket. These slots are pro-rated by National Rules to represent the Democratic voters of past elections. After the allocation process, there is a separate election of the actual individuals who will attend the National (nominating) Convention in Denver in late summer. Bottom line, the candidate that picks up the most pledged delegates from a state won that state. Total popular vote numbers are meaningless since each state varies in how it does the allocation, by caucus or primary, or in the case of Texas both. In all cases they are proportional and fair. (Florida and Michigan had them if they had followed their own rules they agreed to, including the calendar)
terry mcawful on bill mahr tonite. to continue the trashing of barack.
I hope he wins the next two states, but then they will be dismissed.
barack won big time in Virginia and hillary said we don't count.

this software doesn't work. Sorry to bore you
Here is the link that hopefully works.
I post the user conduct code and Denise pops up to defend Tom, even though I made no mention of him. too funny
Phil wrote "I post the user conduct code and Denise pops up to defend Tom, even though I made no mention of him. too funny"
It's funny that you pretend to know less about what you're doing than others of us. What a riot.
do you vote for hillary cause..
she is a woman
it is time for a woman
you feel sorry for her
she was first lady
she had shots with john mccain while traveling to china for a speech
she is a senator
she voted for the war
she wears nice clothes
she has a great daughter
her husband is a cad
her husband could have been a great president
she was hounded by a vast rw conspiracy
her teeth are shiney
her hair is to die for
she can call canada and ask them to make up lies about nafta
she can answer a phone at 3 a.m except not when she has drank shooters
she has crossed some sort of threshold. like in the exoccist
she doesn't have enough delegates but that is not important cause rules don't count anymore
she is not a monster
barack is so mean, he even pulls out her chair for her, but he was just trying to get her to fall on the floor
barack is a man and may be nice
so tell me your reason. you too linda in nm.
No Phil I asked Tom to stop it so you didn't have to post it anymore.
If you didn't post it in response to him, then why did you?
Come on Phil, you stop it too.

Maybe we should all give the lazy suckers a call and remind them how to do their jobs.
linda b you're on a roll tonight
Denise wrote "Tom, we got the point. Stop so Phil doesn't have to post the rules anymore"
It's Pavlovian. seashell writes to suggest that bloggers are hateful and intolerant, so I respond with Linda's insult towards rdorgan. When I do, Phil posts the rules. This is the second time it's occurred.
What else do you expect? When John posts a Josh Frank excerpt traducing Barack Obama, I post an excerpt of him doing the same to Howard Dean as a repudiation. When I do, Phil writes that I suck. Strangely, no one posts the rules at that juncture.
I gotta go tend to my reception.
Fred if I get bit by a skeeter I'm blaming you! (kidding)
Barack at Johnny J's reminds of when i was with Bob Graham and he told me how much he liked ice cream, so I told him he was passing through a town where they sold homemade ice cream that was the best. (at a mom and pop convienence store/gas station at the edge of town) so they re-ordered the schedule to make a five minute stop
then the press secretary called the paper, they arranged a photo shoot for the paper, and the reporter guided them into town where the poor guy got his picture in the paper, but they served him soft serve from a machine at a place next door down town
they drove right by the best ice cream in the state to get the photo shoot
the Senator deserved better

Here are the comments of Chairman Dean as reported in On Politics at USA Today, which I am including because it's apparent that Dean disagrees:
"Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean urged Florida and Michigan party officials to come up with plans to repeat their presidential nominating contests so that their delegates can be counted," the Associated Press writes.
"'All they have to do is come before us with rules that fit into what they agreed to a year and a half ago, and then they'll be seated,' Dean said as he made the rounds on the cable news and major TV networks."

I'm sure that their Corporate sponsors would like hearing from us too.
Has Al Gore endorsed Obama yet?
Bob Graham was a guy that saw through the lies and voted against the war authorization. at the risk of offending audrey, I would suggest he would balance the Obama ticket pretty good. He passes the experience test.
I noticed a change in tenor with Rachel Maddow today. She implied that both candidates were throwing punches at each other so to speak and they should be focusing on each other. Yes and no. Barack cannot continue to let Hillary define him and this race. I can't get over the change in Rachel's tone in just a couple of days. She's smarter than that.
not foucusing on each other - they should be focusing on McCain (per Maddow on Air America). I only had one glass of wine. ;-)

The Chicago Tribune decided to look into Hillary's foreign policy claims. Here's what they found...

Over at DU, giving him a rec and a kick up
Seems that the Clintonistas are calling for Dean to resign.
I like reading the comments. One commenter said he would send money, guns and lawyers if Dean needed them. It looks more like the Dean blog than the Dean blog.

the Chicago Tribune had a picture of Hillary with a piece of confetti stuck under her eye on their cover after Ohio and the lady behind the counter commented "that isn't a very flattering picture"; and I joked "Chicago paper, Chicago politics", back at her.
the unsolicited response
"I wouldn't vote for her in a million years." (and this after a comment that the press was unfair)
I used to say, "I am not afraid of Hillary."
But, she's become a monster to me.

I watched him on Keith's show tonight. I just love this guy (I have a little crush on him - I love his personality to pieces). It really gets to me when he's with Pat Buchanan and Pat always cuts Gene off mid-sentence. Gene is always a gentleman though.
Oops. Clinton's foreign affairs experience is reportedly legendary only in her own mind. This is by Toby Harnden from the Telegraph:
"Hillary Clinton had no direct role in bringing peace to Northern Ireland and is a 'wee bit silly' for exaggerating the part she played, according to Lord Trimble of Lisnagarvey, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and former First Minister of the province.
"'I don’t know there was much she did apart from accompanying Bill [Clinton] going around,' he said. Her recent statements about being deeply involved were merely 'the sort of thing people put in their canvassing leaflets' during elections. 'She visited when things were happening, saw what was going on, she can certainly say it was part of her experience. I don’t want to rain on the thing for her but being a cheerleader for something is slightly different from being a principal player.'
" . . . .
"'I helped to bring peace to Northern Ireland,' [Clinton] told CNN on Wednesday. But negotiators from the parties that helped broker the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 told The Daily Telegraph that her role was peripheral and that she played no part in the gruelling political talks over the years."
" . . . .
"There is no record of a meeting at Belfast City Hall, though Mrs Clinton attended a ceremony there when her husband turned on the Christmas tree lights in November 1995. The former First Lady appears to be referring a 50-minute event the same day, arranged by the US Consulate, the same day at the Lamp Lighter Café on the city’s Ormeau Road.
"The 'Belfast Telegraph' reported the next day that the café meeting was crammed with reporters, cameramen and Secret Service agents. Conversation 'seemed a little bit stilted, a little prepared at times' and Mrs Clinton admired a stainless steel tea pot, which was duly given to her, for keeping the brew 'so nice and hot'."
Maybe she regards her tea pot expertise as preparation for her role as presidential emissary.
audrey - If the Clintonistas are calling for Dean to resign (no surprise there) - how can any Dean supporter support Clinton? Am I missing something here?
If Obama was doing this to Dean -- he'd lose my support in an instant.
PHIL....
I'm not offended if you would choose someone besides Dean for VP, I might not understand it though. There are a number of Dems with some good qualifications, but none as good as Deans.
I remember talking a long time on the phone Grahams aid about how he was too centrist when I lived in Fl. He got better the last year, and he's probably as old as Mc.
Watched a Michigan Politics program tonight, and of course all the talk was about the Michigan and Florida thing. They said Michigan Dems will not be able to reach a consensus, especially in the short time period before June, on how to resolve this mess. They said it took us four years to prepare for the January primary. So it doesn't matter what the rest of the country says, there will be no do-over in Michigan! (my words)
My personal opinion, Michigan did break the rules and they shouldn't try to change them in the middle of the game. By what they said, this moving the primary forward to bypass Iowa and NH was Carl Levin's fault. The Dems' ethics are only a rung up from the rethugs, or not!
mary vb.....
I don't understand your post, sorry. somebody's post at DU said that Dean was being urged, I guess you'd say, to resign. That's nothing new. I don't know if that's why they put up a Howard Dean Appreciation Thread, just thought it might be something people would be interested in.
audrey - I understood what you were saying. My point is this: If someone is a Howard Dean supporter (like all of us) -- how would they be a Clinton supporter. Not really relevant per se to what you posted - it was a question posed to someone like Linda in NM who is such an incredible Dean supporter but is also supporting Hillary.
Howard explained on Tv that all Fl,Mi. had to do is come before the committee and offer their plan as to how they will offer the voters a way to be heard, either a caucus or a primary. That would be the only way they could be seated.
The rules allow for them to do that. That is what I think he said.
mary vb.....
I guess I still don't understand what you are saying. I assume we're both talking about my post at #58. Nothing to do with anyone who might support Hillary.
It was just nice to see the thread, and to read the comments, so many people so proud of Dean.
