Now, These Guys Know How to Rig an Election
Agence France-Presse reports on Russia's presidential election:
Dmitry Medvedev, President Vladimir Putin's hand-picked successor, won a landslide victory in Russian presidential polls on Sunday according to preliminary results, as opponents charged the vote was rigged.
Medvedev had won 69.4 percent of the vote based on results from 75 percent of the country's polling stations, the election commission said.

cChalfonte,
I'm reposting this from previous thread, want to make sure you see it. I'm sorry for being snarky. There was no reason in the world for me to act like that.
Also Renee it is nice to see you. Thanks for the Light A Candle For Hope link.
13 Israels killed by rocket fire in the last 8 years. Yesterday, Israelis killed 60 Palestinians. These figures speak for themselves.
Gazans angry and unbowed

BBC News, Gaza
Palestinians at funeral of five people killed in Jabaliya
Scores of Palestinians have been killed in the past few days
The black marks on the roads leading into Gaza City were an indication of the earlier bloodshed.
Palestinians had dragged tyres onto the road and set them alight.
They hoped that the smokescreen would stop Israeli drones and Apache helicopters - both armed with rockets - from hitting their targets. But it was a futile gesture.
On Saturday, at least 60 Palestinians were killed in one of the bloodiest days of fighting between Israelis and Palestinians in years.
The death toll from Israeli air strikes included at least 25 civilians, including nine children and three women.
The other fatalities were Palestinian militants - the majority of them from Hamas, the Islamic movement which controls Gaza.
'Hysterical' action
Israeli officials say that the military operation was designed to stop the frequent rocket fire from Gaza into towns in southern Israel. Since 2000, 13 Israelis have been killed by these rockets.
How about...Dean for Sixteen....in the WH that is.
We can make it happen. Why shouldn't it be so?
We should be outraged at this news. It's another example of blending the parties into one big war party. So he talks of repugs on his agenda BEFORE he speaks of Dean or the other fabulous dems we have?
Wake up, America!

Obama is hoping to appoint cross-party figures to his cabinet such as Chuck Hagel, the Republican senator for Nebraska and an opponent of the Iraq war, and Richard Lugar, leader of the Republicans on the Senate foreign relations committee. Senior advisers confirmed that Hagel, a highly decorated Vietnam war veteran and one of McCain’s closest friends in the Senate, was considered an ideal candidate for defence secretary. Some regard the outspoken Republican as a possible vice-presidential nominee although that might be regarded as a “stretch”.
Has BO been honest on the campaign trail and talked about how he hopes to appoint repugs? Anybody know?
We're being set up for a unitary executive and all his minions. One party, the war party. Place your bets.
I wonder if Hagel's name will be on the VP list?
If that is in the cards, then I'm out of here. I've had enough of Repubs to last quite a long time.
Obama/Dean is the only answer, if we want to move united toward the General E.
A BBC correspondent says many Iraqis see the visit as the culmination of a process of normalisation in ties.
Mr Ahmadinejad, who arrived in Baghdad on Sunday, made his remark about the US and terrorism after US accusations that Iran was supporting militants.
"Six years ago, there were no terrorists in our region," he said after talks with Abdel Aziz al-Hakim, head of Iraq's largest Shia Muslim political bloc, the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (Sciri).
Earlier, at a news conference with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, the Iranian president said it was not Tehran's fault that Iraq "does not want the US".
The Iranian leader is due to end his visit on Monday. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has said a number of agreements will be signed.
Iraqi leaders extended a warm welcome to the Iranian president, who flew into Baghdad airport and travelled into the city centre by car.
After talks with President Talabani, Mr Ahmadinejad said the visit had opened a "new page" in Iran-Iraq relations.
Prime Minister Maliki said his talks with Mr Ahmadinejad had been "friendly, positive and full of trust".
During the long war between them in the 1980s, many of the prominent Shia now in positions of power in Iraq fled to Iran as Saddam Hussein cracked down on internal dissent.
The US-led overthrow of Saddam Hussein's regime allowed them to return from exile.

The March to War: USS Cole Gives War Jitters to Lebanon
Lebanese PM Fouad Siniora said he did “not ask anyone to send warships.” But since when did the neocons need permission to dispatch warships or, for that matter, invade countries and kill hundreds of thousands of people?
Instead of the “Sunshine State,” maybe Florida should change its motto to the “Police Brutality State.”
Asked about his choice of cabinet last week, Obama told The Sunday Times: “Chuck Hagel is a great friend of mine and I respect him very much,” although he was wary of appearing as though he was already choosing the White House curtains. But after winning 11 primary contests in a row after Super Tuesday, he is ready to elbow Clinton off the stage.

It has to be Dean. Obama owes us big time.
Everone else calls in their chips when they need them. we need to do the same.
Obama/Dean, that's the way it has to be.
Telling the History of the Twenty-First Century as it Really is | The situation in the Middle East has become extremely volatile over the last few days what with the Israelis killing Palestinians by the score in the Gaza and the US provocatively placing their warships just outside of territorial waters off Lebanon.
Barack Obama’s Israel Bond
“Speaking to a group of 100 pro-Israel supporters in Cleveland this week, Obama assured the crowd that as president he would keep Iran in the crosshairs to protect Israeli interests.” In other words, expect an attack against Iran, no matter who sits in the Oval Office.
Hezbollah says US ship is threat
Recall Hezbollah successfully putting Israel’s INS Ahi-Hanit out of commission with a drone aircraft packed with explosives, a move that took most observers by surprise.
...from the posted link
*******************************
"Speaking to a group of 100 pro-Israel supporters in Cleveland this week, Obama assured the crowd that as president he would keep Iran in the crosshairs to protect Israeli interests.
“Now the gravest threat … to Israel today, I believe, is from Iran. There the radical regime continues to pursue its capacity to build a nuclear weapon and continues to support terrorism across the region,” he explained. “Threats of Israel’s destruction can not be dismissed as rhetoric. The threat from Iran is real and my goal as president would be to eliminate that threat.”
After reiterating that he’d end the war in Iraq first, Obama then promised he would turn his attention to the country’s neighbor. “My approach to Iran will be aggressive diplomacy: I will not take any military options off the table.”
In fairness, Obama did mention something few Democrats in Washington dare to utter, “I think there is a strain within the pro-Israel community that says unless you adopt a unwavering pro-Likud approach to Israel that you’re anti-Israel and that can’t be the measure of our friendship with Israel.”
And that's it for me tonight. A good book beckons. Sleep well!
Not quite outta here. If BO is really a Dean fan, he'll ask him to be on the ticket. If he chooses Sibelius or a repug, like Audrey said, I'm gone too.
Howard Dean for Vice President!Ave atque vale, BFA! Salt mines today and spent most of my blog time responding to emails.
Just heard that my *baby* sister married her long-time SO. It was a second marriage for both, so they didn't want to make it a big deal, but still ... wish I'd known BEFORE. Anyhoo, am sending the happy couple all the best. With this marriage, the extended family officially includes Native American representation. We look more like a mini-UN by the day.
********
No. 1 son and wife have officially confirmed the arrival of their first baby for September 2008 and this grandmom is really looking forward to the new arrival to join the world's most fantastic 14-month old grandbaby (IMO,of course). The prospective parents have been together for 19 years (married for the past 7) and we had all given up hope of anything other than *grandpets.* I guess that they just couldn't be outdone by No. 2 son.

Since I am so pressed for time and really must go, I'll leave you all only with DU's wonderful EarlG and the Top Ten.

Good morning, everybody
Don't mean to be disagreeable, but picking Dean for VP is not a favor.
Dodd's a better pick. Dodd's gotthe personality for it, too.

Big Bird vs. Madam Cliche
Why did the brain come up with that? I have no idea. I think it was a 'what does that remind me of' moment.
Has anyone made reference to the Sesame Street Generation? We got a TV in 1970 so the kids could watch it. "It's not easy being green"
Of course, the first TV was a black and white. A year later our youngest won a color TV in a raffle at the hardware store. I'm not sure that big bird being yellow made a big difference to the kids.
I doubt very much if Howard would want the VP slot - I imagine he'll do much better than that with a cabinet position which utilizes his skills. as for a repub for VP - yes, that is a strech - you can see people drooling all over themselves at the thought - pro and con! Dodd has been an outstanding surrogate for Obama on the trail and we know that he would indeed make a good VP. I hope if he chooses a senator that they're from a 'safe' state - we need more dem senators, not fewer.
predictions for this morning and tomorrow morning - wintry mix with freezing rain. but it does sound like it should taper off and be dry in the afternoons... (weather gods, are you listening? please let the voters get to the polls safely...)

Two Foes in '06 Ohio Race Hoping For a Rematch

Reyes: Deal soon on eavesdropping law
Sun Mar 2, 4:32 PM ET
WASHINGTON - The House Intelligence Committee chairman expects a compromise soon on renewal of an eavesdropping law that could provide legal protections for telecommunications companies as President Bush has insisted.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I'm not sure about the Obama/Canada/Nafta dustup. I think Obama's rep may have spoken out a little too much and then the Canadian who wrote the memo may have taken it up still a notch from there. What I've always heard Obama say about Nafta is that it was OK with labor and worker protections which after all are our objections to it.
Remember Jeanne Shmidt in the House? Apparently she has the same Dem opponent.
Those jerks are gonna cave on telecom immunity. Rather than supporting candidates, I vote that DFA spearhead a 'vote no incumbent' drive. Let's get the career moneychangers out of our temple.
Was Bill Clinton Really A Convert To Dean's 50-State Project?
---
March 31, 2006
...A new DNC hire -- finance director Carl Chidlow -- was brought aboard to help bridge the two cultures. Chidlow was deputy finance director for Sen. John Kerry's record-setting presidential bid and considered one of the party's best professional fundraisers.
A friend says Chidlow decided to accept Dean's job offer after finding evidence that Dean truly was committed to competing everywhere. One of Chidlow's prime tasks today: to evangelize Dean's state-based efforts to major donors.
And Dean has one supremely important new ally who, when he goes public, will almost certainly help with donors. In late February, Dean traveled to Harlem and sat down with former President Bill Clinton, often said to be privately disparaging of Dean.
But as Dean walked Clinton through his 50-state capacity-building project, Clinton became a convert. He vowed to help Dean win the attention of donors. ... http://hotlineblog.nationaljournal.com/a...

To beat McCain we might need a Webb, but I like the sound of Senator Ned Lamont that VP Dodd would bring.
Let the Ohio voters get a chance to decide the issue of who is on top the ticket first though.
last July in the one chance i got to visit with Terry McAuliffe he said something close to "Our campaign is going to make sure we win Ohio" which to me meant they had resources they were putting into that state ahead of Iowa as we were discussing it since they were confident of Feb 5th at the time last July still. and he was talking about the General Election and the Electoral College. Clinton has been spending money all along in the states needed to win with the 17 state fall plan; Ohio being one. and they have done well in those states so far, so Ohio is the showdown state with Obama
Canadian government officials wrote an inaccurate portrayal of his private discussion on the campaign's trade policy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Annilow
that is an admission that he did have the discussion
the two are not far apart on trade, one of the reasons for all the corporate opposition to Edwards
as soon as Hillary Clinton drops out, Bill might help Howard because she will have general election money in the FEC account that could be converted to national Party Building accounts and not legal for other uses
it is the kind of move that heals party unity
If Obama somehow fails to win Texas and Ohio (which I highly doubt as of right now) he would have tens of millions more to kick in the pot
in that unlikely case we would need every cent to get all of his supporters to vote for Clinton
schools closed due to roads here today Thankful but keep in touch about a meetup late in the week
I'm predicting Hillary will pull out both TX and OH.
Phil - good point about the Obama staff/Nafta meeting.
just because an individual makes a number of comment spouting off about nation-states, political organizations, and terrorist networks in the midst of very liberal pacifists doesn't make said person a long term bad-boy, haha I kill myself.
You know, Bill Clinton appointed Republicans to his cabinet and the world did not fall down.
I personally think Chuck Hagel is a great guy and would want him to have a cabinet post no matter who wins.
As for VP, I really REALLY want it to be a woman.
I would hope for a great job for Howard, but much as I love him, I really REALLY want a woman VP. Even Sebelius will do, although she totally does not thrill me.
one of the reasons of course not to have invaded Iraq in the first place was that Sunni Baathists held a strong line against the expansion of power by that much larger Shia state next door that was always directly helping Hezbollah
Bush is an idiot.
The VP choice might well wait until after the Republicans first pick theirs, and then Obama's would be a counter.
I'd look for Clinton/Clark in that unlikely chance.
I was for (The Islamic Republic of)Iran, before I was against it.
It was a momentous moment when America was involved in the machinations which allowed ayatollah khomeini to return from exile an kiss the ground he would come to RULE. Hope for a better tomorrow was in the air.
But, the attack and capture of our Embassy was not, and is not today, an isolated injury. We can agree to like the people of Iran, but I don't their governing concern.
"one of the reasons of course not to have invaded Iraq in the first place was that Sunni Baathists held a strong line against"
Another was the containment Iraq had expressed upon it by "coalition"(?) forces up to the moment the CI(diot)IC pulled open Pandora's Box the trigger which began a unilateral and wholly unnecessary war.
the good news paine is that cycles in politics are common and they are ripe for an Obama charm offensive on the street even as the leadership there becomes irrelevant
Linda wrote "I very much dislike the DLC as most on this list could probably agree with. I was thrilled when Al Gore disassociated himself from them afterhe lost in 2000. I wish Democrats didn't find them as a powerful group they felt the need to align themselves with. I truly dislike a group of people trying to claim for a Democrat to win, they need to be more Republican like. I don't like their policies, Privatizing School, Privatizing Social Security, Pro War, Pro supply and demand and Freetrade. Al From and Bruce Reed, the Founders, President and CEO of DLC...and now Harold Ford Jr, the Chair."
You neglected to add the Chair of the DLC American Dream Initiative. She's the one to the left of Al From.
Bush is the worst President ever for many reasons, his destruction of the Rule of Law, the value of our currency, the chewing up of our ground forces in an un-necessary war, but the biggest is that he ended decades of international cooperation in an era of a small but truly global threat.
Invading Iraq was wrong on so many levels you can't count them all, and Hillary Clinton's authorization vote should disqualify her from the job she is seeking.
But I'm willing to let the voters of Ohio decide, and they might end up saying universal health care is more important in a declining economy where loss of a job means loss of health care.
