Presidential Candidates and Demographics

Written by: DFA Staff on Mar 2, 2008 11:30 AM EST

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution takes a look at the presidential candidates and where there support is coming from...or not:

Hillary Clinton can bank on the support of women. Conservatives will never trust John McCain. Southern white men won't vote for Barack Obama.

All were conventional wisdom before this year's presidential contests began, and the voters shot some holes in each.

How Do You Prove You’re a Jew?

By GERSHOM GORENBERGPublished: March 2, 2008 -

One day last fall, a young Israeli woman named Sharon went with her fiancé to the Tel Aviv Rabbinate to register to marry. They are not religious, but there is no civil marriage in Israel. The rabbinate, a government bureaucracy, has a monopoly on tying the knot between Jews. The last thing Sharon expected to be told that morning was that she would have to prove — before a rabbinic court, no less — that she was Jewish. It made as much sense as someone doubting she was Sharon, telling her that the name written in her blue government-issue ID card was irrelevant, asking her to prove that she was she....

I hate Carville and Begala too. But if we're going to tie those two ?Strategiests? to Hillary, even though (FACT) they don't work on her campaign, surely we should tie those who actively work on Obama's campaign as well, like Rahm Emanuel et al.

(from Linda NM previous thread).

Rahm has not made an "official endorsement" but he was supporting Obama very early on. Originally he was expected to endorse Hillary, but since Obama entered, he has not "endorsed" anyone.

But he had been acting as a supporter as I said early on.

This is from when He first announced he would run.

WSJ's John Harwood discusses Democratic Sen. Barack Obama's initial steps in a presidential bid.

Seeking to explain Mr. Obama's appeal, Mr. Emanuel, who also remains uncommitted, said, "Every president is an answer to their predecessor in some capacity. If you think, as I do, that George Bush is the most divisive president in recent memory, Barack as a force for unity is a perfect antidote to the Bush years."

Linda NM brings in some excellent info and it looks to me as if many BO supporters either treat her unkindly or simply dismiss the truth, quotes and links she provides.

Are you guys so brain-washed that you can't see that both cands  have pros and cons and are practically identical in their policies?

Also, now that other arguments are failing, you are starting to equate being pro-Hill with being anti-Dean.  Those are low blows, since no one is sure what either one would do as prez.  I don't hear either of them wanting to disband the unitary executive *control.*

And it's BO who's talking about "actionable intel" which would propel him into bombing, yes bombing Pakistan.  We all know about "actionable intel."

The story about BO calling his friend is a no brainer.  Even I know that that was illegal and unconstitutional.  It's not necessarily a good quality to be running to friends to garner support for what you already know to be right or wrong. It certainly CAN be a good quality, but it can also be a very FLAWED one.  Some situations have only one side - torture for instance.  Would BO call friends and ask them if it's OK?

We might be going from one prez who can't/doesn't think at all to one who thinks too much.  I've always felt that about BO - too many brains, not enuf heart.

And one more very annoying thing.

If "Sominex Woman" is his choice for VP,  it would show just how poor his judgment really is.  Sibelius, a heartbeat away from the presidency.  I think even BO supporters would shudder at this thought. And yet, it seems to be going in that direction.

Both should announce their choices soon and I'll vote for the VP choice I think would be best...w/o announcing, I'll sit out.

Gore's already said he wouldn't be interested in anything less than top job or something to that effect.

Dean or Boxer or Feingold would work well for me, but I think BO might be heading over a cliff with Sebelius.

You BO supporters better start pressuring him to choose wisely. After all, he's giving you the power, right?  That means you're going to have to work day and night, and forego lots of good stuff in order to get him on a progressive anti-war, pro-peace course.  A little phone banking is nothing compared to what you'll have to do to keep him in line...since he's so much like HC in policy.

Let's talk about the MIC and MCA.  Both of them are mute; the debates reveal nothing except endless bickering  over health care.

BTW, he didn't know the name of Putin's successor either.  He changed the subject.

Let's ask both of them who their foreign policy advisors will be?  Besides AIPAC, of course.

Onward to the discussion of hair, clothes, battering of women, and pantsuits.  "American Idol President."

Have a nice day.  I certainly intend to.

Well, Hill and Bill have been pretty unabashedly anti-Dean at all times, so IMO being pro-Hill is "kinda" anti-Dean, although politics is so incestuous that the enemy or your enemy often functons as a friend.

I just got done watching the AM programs on tape, had meeting at work this morning.

My two big takeaways:

1.) Richardson as good as endorsed Obama. I am personally still very surprised by this.

2.) We have long been told that soldiers who die from combat wounds after returning to the US are not counted into the Iraq/Afghanistan body count. I now know this to be in error. Last week our city lost an Iraq vet who was critically wounded seven months ago and has been stateside for that length of time. He was promptly reported as a war casualty this morning on This Week. So there is no submerged, second-tier list of casualties. I am very relieved to know this.

The experience folks keep looking for is not going to be gotten by BO getting a Governor or Female Governor as his running mate. If people are looking to him because he's not a woman, but doesn't have experience, that won't help him. And if people are looking for experience, that usually means a way of handling Foreign Affairs, again, the Governor running mate won't help him.

Also Marie Osmond hit 'Climb Every Mountain' out of the park on the Osmond 50th Anniversary Show on PBS. I don't think she or Donny (or the others for that matter) are capable of hitting a bad note. And when Donny starts a song, he asks for the beat but doesn't need a note -- guess the guy's got perfect pitch -- she prolly does too. So what's on tonight?

Hi all. Annilow...."Hillary eats babies"....lol. I like your sense of humor.

As mentioned earlier, I recall reading posts, several, complaining that after the DFA endorsement of Obama, that Obama somehow "shunned/dissed/didn't want to be photographed with", Governor Dean. Again, I don't recall exactly what specific act Obama did that was perceived as a slight against Gov. Dean but there were definitely multiple posts about it. SOMEONE here very likely recalls the specifics and should clarify.

I also recall some folks here expressing their discontent with Obama once he became a senator....alluding to him being a sellout...again not those specific words but this was the trend of the commentary. Again, some of the folks that posted this are likely still here and could clarify this.

I didn't make much of either at the time cuz I've been here long enough to know that a guy/gal can be numero uno one day on this blog and panned the next for some perceived slight.

worse however is the pure contempt the DLC holds for Dean and the huge backward step putting them into power would represent

Hillary could have been a historic, 50 state, grassroots, change candidate too if she was a believer, and may well have won the nomination.

Perhaps BO's campaign is being run better ;  it doesn't necessarily equate that he's the better choice.  Let's not confuse the bathwater with the baby.

Even putz had people running his campaign that *won* it for him.  He was a lousy candidate and it showed, yet he *won*...twice.

yes, I also remember BO dissing Howard and I remember him sucking up to Mr AIPAC Lieberman.  He also didn't want to be photographed with a gay official from CA, yet claims to be pro-gay.

Asking money for Lamont and then kissing up Lieberman?  Contradiction.  I've said many times that this guy plays both sides of the aisle, wants to be liked by everybody and disappears when the votes get too tough.   Those are serious character/personality flaws.

Especially the playing both sides of the aisle which he calls compromise and having a seat at the table.  Wanting to be "fair and balanced" is not always a good thing...it can lead to indecision, changing of mind, embracing enemies who'll just as soon stab you in the back as compromise, muddled thinking and either over-reaction or no reaction at all.   He has downsides to his "fair and balanced" side.

IMO his biggest personal flaw is that he wants to be all things to all people.  He operates out of *other-referral* rather than *self-referral.*  He's trying to please all the people all the time.  Won't/can't work.

BO changes with the weather and always at low profile. There's no guarantee he won't drop Dean and Dean's strategy.  Besides, when Dean is no longer chair, what then happens to the 50 stater?

He should forget Sominex Woman and beg Dean to be VP.  He should at the very least be saying something about wanting Dean with him as prez should he win.  Is he?

And Hill needs to jump fast on Dean's wagon.

What disappointments they both are.   We can do better, but didn't.

Seashell...

Long before Obama and clinton became the sole remaining candidates, it became evident how similar the two were on the issues.

This election, to Democrats, is basically a showdown between the old Clinton/DLC, 15 state, big money, TV ad focused losing campaigns, and the new Dean grassroots people powered winning campaigns.

The candidates are the symbols of these two choices. We could discuss the slight differences on the issues or some personal traits, but in the end it is the choice of which one will allow us to continue our battle to take back the Party and country to continue.

Don't fret the details, keep your eyes on our goal.

And again, what will happen to the 50 stater when/if Dean is not a viable part of a new prez, should it be BO?  In other words, who carries on Dean's work?

Perhaps all of these discussions will be moot within the next few months.

Seashell....

I have questions about Obama and how much of what he says is motivated by ambition, Hillary too.

Bo is using the Dean plan, so we know it will continue. I would feel good if Howard were VP. Now that I think about it, that would be a perfect complement. Howard would bring everything needed to the campaign. I noticed at Kos that there were some who thought that was a good idea, and that it could happen. Obama could bring everyone together, and Howard could slay the corp. and the right wing dragons. And, everytime Howard would visit a foreign country, we would have a new friend in the world.
Since Obama is taking Howards, lead, both in campaigning and in word, he might not need too much watching by Howard and us. If he strays, don't worry, Howard and DFA will get after him, and so it should be.

....??? i am better than what....anyhow, just saw this and didn't look upthread if there's something else about me.

I did want to answer that one question.

What happened to my love for Gore??? It's alive and well, thank you. Nothing changes for that great man that we would have been so lucky to be the Leader of this country and then an inspirational leader for the World.

But, alas, Mr. Gore isn't running for President. So I'm doing exactly what I should, the next best who cherishes the values and principles I do.

Hillary is better on the Environment. She didn't push a Lobbyist Pushed Tax Dollar Funded Liquified Coal bill like Obama did.

Hillary has better programs and efficiencies and stands up to the special Interests. She seeks higher CAFE standards and is even promoting the recommendation of Al Gore's idea for a Connie Mae to mortgage GREEN building when building/buying a home.

She agrees that Universal Health Care is a moral right.

And she has shown the chutzpah and experience to fight those special interessts and get the job done.

Did anyone expect Hillary to do so much with Republicans in the Senate? BINGO.

I support the right candidate.

...I'll stay off the Obama blog that dfa has become. Too small a group for me to fit in with.

CIAO!+++Good things come in small packages. One day you may figure that out.

What an @ssh***. But, no surprise there, huh?

It depends on the small package. Small brains are not usually a good thing.

Linda.....

This would be easier if Edwards were the nominee. He openly said he would try to undo the control of Corp. over the politics and the country. That's probably why he's not the candidate.

so, we won't know what Obama will do. He saw what happened to Dean and Edwards., We do know, by her own words more of what Hillary will do, no guessing there. She said, "There is nothing the matter with the Dem. Party. It doesn't need fixing".

If Hillary is the nominee, the last five years have been a waste of time and we can go back to the Party of '04., and start over again some day.

Uf we don't fix this now, every election we'll be arguing
arguing over what the candidates are SAYING and they will say ANYTHING if they think we don't have the power.

So now it's OK to call other bloggers assholes?

Folks it might be time to stop playing with the scorpion in the desert.

My empathy was wasted a week or so ago, that's for sure.
