Gov. Dean and the 50-state Strategy in the Nation

Written by: DFA Staff on Mar 1, 2008 11:45 PM EST

Ari Berman has a piece in the upcoming issue of the Nation about Howard Dean, the DNC, the presidential candidates, and the 50-state strategy:

The race for the Democratic nomination is a window into how the candidates view the future of the party, which is being shaped in large part by Dean's efforts. Are Clinton and Obama similarly committed to Dean's fifty-state strategy? How much faith would each, as the Democratic nominee, put in the party's grassroots? In the Internet era, the party is less about elder statesmen sitting in Washington than millions of people across the country organizing locally around issues and candidates. Dean and Obama have understood how the party is changing--and have embraced it. Clinton, thus far, has not.

The Chair is first.  Leadership can produce!

Thank you Howard Dean for moving the Democrats forward with the 50-state strategy.

Newton's First Law of Motion...

states in part:

An object at rest tends to stay at rest  ...

Well, the Democrats were at rest, but a force set it in motion.  Howard has affected the dirction of a now moving Democratic Party...

time, and time again.

Bravo Democrats!  Thank you for showing up, Howard.

If Clinton soldiers on with canvassing and expanding the Party in Indiana and Kentucky and West Virginia, and especially next in Pennsylvania and runs a positive campaign about the future and her role in taking the country back out of this hole Bush dug   ....  no harm done

If she begins to take the low road the super delegate branch of the Party is going to want to pull the plug

Obama can train volunteers from states right across the border and turn around and send them home to good effect

this is only bad for the party if it is a circular firing squad, if they both focus on McCain and the future, win/win

Hillary herself holds the key, because she can fire the team members that go negative.

Morning,

Hi sm, I know how you feel about phone banking.  I, too, have the same discomfort though I've done lots of it.  Mostly people are pretty nice, same with knocking on doors.  But, the introvert that I am, really hates to bother people because I don't like being bothered.  Irony is, I'm pretty nice when people bother me.

Judy for Dean, thanks for the correction on the last thread about Hezzbolah and Hamas.  I've had a respiratory infection, and after I posted last night it occurred to me I said Hezzbolah instead of Hamas.  Not being able to breathe fuddles the brain.

Snow here after 60 and 70 degree weather and the beautiful spring light yesterday. Ah, Colorado.  I think our altitude and being affected by the air currents makes us aware of how changeable weather is.

I am praying, yes, praying that Obama wins the coming contests.  Now as an exCAtholic, I'm not sure how welcome my prayers are, but I so desperately want a change, want to believe in the good will, effort, and ethics of this country again.  If anyone is interested, read John Dean's book, Broken Government, and the details of how the Republicans, and some Democrats have corrupted our system are more than dismayiang.  They are frightening.

Ignoring my own superstitions about jinxes - anyway they were just discussing it on MTP -- if Obama's biggest 'flaw' is 'inexperience' his veep should represent 'experience' -- now who would help him win in a landslide? Not to mention we might have a real country again? Al Gore.

Russert's performance as a moderator of this week's debate has drawn widespread criticism. Most appalling was his bizarre fixation on Louis Farrakhan.

Russert asked Barack Obama about Louis Farrakhan's praise for the Illinois senator. Obama, who had previously denounced Farrakhan, did so again. Then Russert asked about Farrakhan again. So Obama reiterated his denunciation. Then Russert, (who, I can only assume, was not bothering to listen to Obama's responses) asked about Farrakhan again. So Obama again reiterated his denunciation. Russert, plowing ahead, asked yet another question about Farrakhan, prompting Obama to answer yet again.

Josh Marshall summed up Russert's behavior nicely: "It was a nationwide, televised, MSM version of one of those noxious Obama smear emails."

On Chris Matthews Sunday show the woman Cynthia? from Georgia said John Lewis waited too late to change is vote to Obama and b/c of it he had a Dem challenger for the first time in memory -- b/c they feel he is out of touch with the voters of his district. She said that others not switching would face the same fate. Quite frankly I find this a little scary -- like the rumors on past threads that superdelegates are being strongarmed to change.

The 3am type political ads have been around since 1984. They discussed that this morning on MTP. Not saying anyone copied anyone but the strategy to use these types of ads has been around for awhile now.

Obama used the same type of ad to specifically call out their own message as opposed to hers. I don't see it as copying so much as using a message strategy that has been around for a couple of decades, and to SPECIFICALLY show where they are diametrically in opposition of each other with that strategic message.

Regarding Obama not speaking to Chicago newspapers - this must mean in the past few months as there are many archives on the Internet showing him he discussed it in 2006 when questioned by the Tribune.

He's admitted what he knows - what else does he need to do? Both candidates can be associated with him, so any further discussion from them only takes away from talking about the real issues that are important to today's voter - the economy, health care, Middle East situation, etc.
