One Out of Every 100 American Adults is in Jail or Prison

Written by: DFA Staff on Feb 28, 2008 5:15 PM EST

Think about it.  1 out of 100.  That is extraordinary and depressing.  The AP writes about the new Pew Center on the States study about incarceration rates:

For the first time in U.S. history, more than one of every 100 adults is in jail or prison, according to a new report documenting America's rank as the world's No. 1 incarcerator.

When public policy is based on the fear of the other, what do you get?

Answer: California

The privatization of the public school system (vouchers & Charter Schools) and the prison system in California has made a lot of folks a lot of blood money through out the years. Organization assocated with these business are some of the largest lobbies in Sacramento. They constantly talk about the need for a security state. Ex-Military turn to law enforcement jobs if no higher education is available. California presently spends more on funding it's prisons than on funding institutions for higher learning. It's a total disgrace. And now the Goobernator wants to close (privatize) our state parks and cut spending on our healthcare and public schools even though public healthcare and public schools are mandated.

IMO, it's totally backward and illogical thinking. There is a lot of greed in there too.

California prisons soon cost more than California universities http://leisureguy.wordpress.com/2007/10/...

Bank of America donates to Central Valley groups fighting foreclosures

• Makes $250,000 in grants to housing nonprofits
• Stockton, Sacramento, Bakersfield to benefit

Nonprofits working with mortgage-distressed homeowners in the city of Stockton as well as Kern and Sacramento counties in the Central Valley and the Inland Empire in Southern California will share in $250,000 in grants from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation.

The markets have the highest concentration of home foreclosures in California and are among the nation's highest.

The money is in addition to the foundation’s earlier grant of $500,000 to the new California Home Ownership Preservation Initiative led by the California Reinvestment Coalition.

The grants will support post-purchase education, mortgage loan workouts, and other efforts that help families stay in their homes and avoid foreclosure, the bank says.

Bank of America is part of Project Lifeline that provides a 30-day grace period for delinquent homeowners, and is supporting foreclosure prevention workshops in Stockton, Sacramento, Riverside, Los Angeles and San Diego. ...full story: http://www.centralvalleybusinesstimes.co...

That is quite an article at thenation.com. Begala giving credit to Dean for what he's done!
Bill Press even said Howard was "right" on Tucker show tonight.

Steve Grossman's comment I didn't like. He said of Howard...a prophet without honor in your own land. He was referring to the fact that others will be taking credit for what Howard has done. This is already evident.

We can help stem that by constantly referring to the plan as Howard Dean's 50 state plan that elected a majority in 06 and a Dem Pres. in '08 and a veto proof congress.

Pretty successful I'd say, so far. What next Howard?

More than one-third of Vermont Democratic lawmakers formally endorsed Barack Obama for President today. Vermont State Senate President Peter Shumlin, a long-time supporter, presented the list of 43 legislators at the Statehouse this morning. Shumlin and a number of the lawmakers took time to make statements:

Shumlin: “After years of a bitterly divided nation, Senator Obama offers the hope of uniting us behind a common purpose. He's reminding us of the good we can accomplish if we all work together. He is engaging the young people of this nation in a way that inspires new hope.”

Senator Susan Bartlett: “In the next few days, this grassroots movement for change will reach out to as many people in Vermont as we can to spread the word about Senator Obama’s ability to make change we can believe in and remind them to get out to the polls on Tuesday.”

On topic, 8:50 PM CST
Republicans rob students and sick people to build prisons. Simple fact. In the late eighties and through the nineties, my major duty at the University was to make college logistically possible for physically challenged folk. These kids were getting a full ride from Pell Grants and Voc. Rehab money. My favorite housing unit had 20 to 30 eager, gifted, challenged indiduals at any given time Engineers, artists, teachers and professionals, we enabled these kids to become taxpayers.
Then came awful Noot's contract w/America and eight years of the Cheney Demon and thirsty George. We have only TWO P.C. students, both credit-carding their education. I worry about the other twenty, thirty, sixty, or hundreds more not getting a great college education. As Dr. Dean says, "We Can Do Better!" If we all work hard and smart and elections go well, our work is just beginning. The damage done at every level by bedarkened failures, is on an equal par w/ global warming. Stay strong and fight like hell. Off to the gym now. A good workout fights the frustration.

Here's your answer to whether or not BO would bomb Pakistan - which would be a MAJOR error.   I don't recall HC saying something like this.

*************************

By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama said on Wednesday the United States must be willing to strike (BOMB) al Qaeda targets inside Pakistan, adopting a tough tone after a chief rival accused him of naivete in foreign policy.

Obama's stance comes amid debate in Washington over what to do about a resurgent al Qaeda and Taliban in areas of northwest Pakistan that President Pervez Musharraf has been unable to control, and concerns that new recruits are being trained there for a September 11-style attack against the United States.

Obama said if elected in November 2008 he would be willing to attack (BOMB) inside Pakistan with or without approval from the Pakistani government, a move that would likely cause anxiety in the already troubled region.

"If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will," Obama said.

I know of no BO supporters in the tango community.  People are upset with the 2 remaining candidates as they were JE and Gore supporters.  Several said they'd not vote for either, which is where I'm headed.

I know of one woman who will vote for BO becuz "I don't feel comfortable with Hillary."  When I asked why, she couldn't say.  It was a feeling only.  She knew next to nothing about BO and admitted it.

BO's comment today about the first thing he'd do as prez....he'd sit down in the *Offal* Office and say, "This is cool," did not sit well, tho maybe I've lost my sense of humor.  :-)   I don't want a cool prez.  I want one who knows enuf about the ME to NOT bomb Pakistan or any other country, uninvited no less.

Odds are pretty good that a lot of young people are voting for BO becuz he's sexy in their minds.  The photo of him in his bathing suit, buff as he is, is really playing to some of the young womens' fantasies.  And I can see why..but that's not a good reason to vote for him.

If HC were younger, with a D cup and long blond hair, I bet she'd be doing better.  Hormones rage in the youth and BO is just the guy to get 'em going.  Not a bad thing...but this is a presidential election fer god's sake.

And he's young enuf to still have pumping testosterone himself.

This long primary season is giving me a chance to see the reaction to BO, to ferret out info that many of his voters don't even know about....his advisors for example....We all know HC's flaws, so we late voters get the chance to really study BO.

Oh, and the BO TV ads have stopped.

Seashell, wtf. where are you>>>??????????

There are a lot of young people, under 24 who adore Obama cause he is young, articulate, and he is the people they grew up with . African Americans, Hispanics, well everyone.

They like him cause he is THEM.

How dare you use that crap  And you talk of your tango community? These kids are hip hop, alternative music. For christ's sake , grow up.

I am almost ___ and I can idenitfy with their choice more than most.

My son, who is apolitical but votes, was so excited to come to our JJ dinner with a bunch of old farts to see Obama. He way sycked. And he and his friends voted for Obama cause WHY, they gave them hope form us old geezers who have crapped up this country. AND THEY VOTED IN A PRIMARY IN VIRGINIA.

These kids are smart.

You need to  go back to dancing and not telling the young uns they are voting for a swim suit model. Unless you want a job at faux or cnn.

Dont kid yourself sea, people like Obama for the best of reasons.  The marketability doesnt hurt, but if Clinton had his resume, she'd be doing better.  Democrats and young people look at "experience" as a negative.    She's carrying a lot of Bill's baggage and her own.

My favorite reason for liking BO is probably what appeals to most people.  He is picking up where Dean left off.  The Dean Revolution was about going straight to the people for support and money and snubbing the special interests.

90% of his money is from small donars and has just passed the 1million mark.  He openly as disparages special interests money and goes into office beholden to none.  Hillary tries to sing that song but just cant.  Big money is her lifeblood.

Just my opinion..I think a pres. candidate should exhibit maturity, wisdom and good judgement. Whether he or she has the ability to attract young voters doesn't enter into it.

That is the job of the parents and teachers to inspire an interest in country and constitution. and responsibilities.

If we're only motivated because someone else inspired us, we are in sad shape.

What is going to happen if we're disappointed in the new leadership. Will we go into a 20 year funk waiting for the next Pied Piper?
