A Great Speech by Jimmy Carter
One of my favorite authors is Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. In his book The Great Shark Hunt, Dr. Thompson writes about Gov. Jimmy Carter's "Law Day" address at the University of Georgia on May 4, 1974. It is a pretty remarkable address where Gov. Carter talks about the law, compassion, and some of his influences:
My own interest in the criminal justice system is very deep and heartfelt. Not having studied law, I've had to learn the hard way. I read a lot and listen a lot. One of the sources for my understanding about the proper application of criminal justice and the system of equity is from reading Reinhold Niebuhr, one of his books that Bill Gunter gave me quite a number of years ago. The other source of my understanding about what's right and wrong in this society is from a friend of mine, a poet named Bob Dylan. After listening to his records about "The Ballad of Hattie Carol" and "Like a Rolling Stone" and "The Times, They Are a-Changing," I've learned to appreciate the dynamism of change in a modern society.
I grew up as a landowner's son. But I don't think I ever realized the proper interrelationship between the landowner and those who worked on a farm until I heard Dylan's record, "I Ain't Gonna Work on Maggie's Farm No More." So I come here speaking to you today about your subject with a base for my information founded on Reinhold Niebuhr and Bob Dylan.
It is a 9 page speech, but well worth the read.

And the chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp and banking industry experts foresee many bank failures down the road.

This post is for Denise.. I just wanted to let you know I did see your posts today in response to my post about your answer to Seashell. I, also, saw that you & she seemed to be ok with what was worked out between you.
I don't know if I have ever directly responded to you before or vice versa, but hopefully, you understand that I read that post & actually had to bring it forward a couple threads in order to answer, so I definitely felt a lot about the manner in which it was written. But that's over.
Obama is not my guy, but I don't like to see him being ridiculed over & over when they use his middle name simply to try & bring him down. My concern about him, is he a "doer". We've had enough of delegaters to last us forever. I want someone who knows enough & doesn't have to totally rely on someone else.

Sea and I have met in person and I have nothing personal against her. She is a sweet woman that rightfully has alot of questions.
I was a Gore supporter with hopes of him entering the race, but since he did not I am supporting Obama and have for quite some time. No bandwagon for me - I sent him money way back when DFA supported him, as well as when he was running for Illinois state senate representing the south side of Chicago, my hometown.

William J. Haynes, the Pentagon's chief legal officer and overseer of Guantanamo's Military Commissions, is stepping down, amid mounting controversy over the tribunal process, so he can "return to private life," the Department of Defense announced late on Monday. Haynes' resignation comes exactly two weeks after landmark charges were brought against six "high-value" Guantanamo detainees.
Whether Obama or Clinton is the nominee, I truly believe Jim Webb is the best VP candidate.
He can and would stick it in the ear of "War-monger McCain".
James Earl Carter - perhaps a good lesson on why Hillary Rodham Clinton would not be a successful or well-liked President. His "my way or the highway" approach was only trumped by Clinton's similar "take it or leave it attitude" on health care.
Post White House - Carter is undoubtedly an incredibly good former President - particularly in terms of standing up to the rotten current pResident.

The House Human Resources Committee passed House Study Bill 630 which establishes an Emergency Mental Health Crisis Services System. The system is established within the Iowa Department of Human Services.
Specifically, the system will set standards for accrediting or approving emergency mental health crisis services providers, identify geographic regions for organizing the system, coordinate the services with other providers and law enforcement, identify basic services to be provided, and operational requirements for accreditation or approval of providers.
Currently, all Iowans do not have access to emergency mental health crisis services. For those that do, the services are very limited in scope and limited in eligibility. The service system is intended to be a statewide system, available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week for all Iowans.
The system will provide an array of time-limited services to reduce escalation of events to crises, the immediate distress of persons in crisis, the risk of individuals doing harm to themselves or others, and to promote independence for those who require ongoing mental health services.
In addition to House Study Bill 630, the Health and Human Services Budget subcommittee is examining appropriate funding to start the implementation of the statewide program.

It is of more than a passing interest to Iowa delegates since we had to have special dispensention to jump the calendar ourselves, and I don't have a vote in it but have been in the loop of direct conversations with people that do make those decisions and I would be guilty of insider trading if I did not disclose that before I took your money in a bet.
Florida and Michigan delegates better have their plane tickets bought unless they provide the winning margin for Hillary who is behind without them, and if they don't matter at all either way will be seated, bet on it.

Dow GE corn contaminates 53,000 acres: The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food & Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency have issued a press release warning that a genetically engineered corn seed has been contaminating Iowa cornfields since 2006. The DowAgroSciences seed, a variety known as Event 32, was illegally sold under the labels Herculex RW and Herculex EXTRA. Dow claims that pollen from stalks of the unapproved GE variant inadvertently "landed on a patch of approved stalks." The Des Moines Register says the seeds were "genetically engineered to make the plants toxic to insect pests." The USDA describes Event 32 an "unregistered pesticide product" but claims it poses no harm to plants or humans and, furthermore, "poses no plant pest...concerns." The Register called the disclosure "the latest in a series of incidents in which unapproved biotech varieties of corn and rice have made their way into seed or grain supplies," beginning in 2000, when GE StarLink corn wound up in taco shells and other commercial food products, and was later found in corn exported by USAID to Bolivia. Greg Jaffe of the Center for Science in the Public Interest cited this as evidence that the biotech industry still "isn't policing itself adequately."

EPA has stopped the use of the pesticide lindane in agriculture, calling it "one of the most toxic, persistent, bioaccumulative pesticides ever registered." Yet the Food and Drug Administration continues to allow lindane use in shampoos and lotions used on children. Join me and tell FDA's Commissioner that it is time his agency caught up with the rest of the world and banned this dangerous pesticide.
