Al Gore's Week's News Round Up

Written by: Linda on Jan 26, 2008 10:21 AM

Al Gore has been quite busy this past week. Many have been asking for him and wondering what he's been doing, so I thought I would share some of what I have learned.

The week started out with two new videos being uploaded to Current.com

It actually took many days before it went viral and now one of the videos has become all the buzz.

I guess we could call these Rights. The first video, no doubt in honor of the anniversary of Roe V Wade, titled "Who Makes the Decision", reaffirming his position that a woman should choose her medical decisions, including on abortion. And as important it is now days to reaffirm that right and position, it was the 2nd video that thrilled everyone, with Mr. Gore's passion and detailed reasoning for why he believes that "Gay Men and Women should have the same rightsL" and endorses marriage. I couldn't agree more. And having a politician, especially of Mr. Gore's standing, advocate for same sex marriage was a breath of fresh air.

Then on to Sundance Festival where Mr. Gore was seen walking in with Bono to U2's 3D film being showed.

Rock and politics at the Sundance Film Festival
Former Vice President Al Gore was seen walking into the U2 film sans entourage, then sitting with the band at the screening after being photographed by fans in the lobby amid screams of “We love you!”

Hard to tell who was the bigger rock star that night — Bono or Gore.

Mr. Gore then boarded his flights for Europe. First stopping off in Sweden to accept his award by Crown Princess Victoria, who presented his award for "relentless commitment to put an end to the climate crisis by increasing public awareness about global warming." The award was presented to Mr. Gore in front of near 6000 guests.

After accepting his award, Mr. Gore headed over to Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he again attended with Bono the muchly anticipated dual conversation.

"Bono noted up front that there's competition as well as combination: "We have noticed that interest from the media that had been so acute on issues of extreme poverty is not so acute now because of the climate crisis."

Then again, Gore cited the League of Conservation Voters scorecard on how many times TV interviewers have asked presidential candidates about global warming. It's currently 4 times out of 2,830 total questions asked, so that doesn't seem like overwhelming media attention either
."

Any discussion on climate change at an event full of people with private jets is a bit cringe-inducing. Bono, to his credit, did not shy from his role as a major global polluter. He described having Gore over to his house: "Here's the recycler, Al. I've got a posh car but it runs on ethanol, Al."

Then he said Gore reminds him of an Irish priest. Bono would confess to him his Gulfstream-flying sins, and Gore would say, "What are you gonna do about it, son?" To which Bono would respond: "I'm trying to be good, Father Al, but to be honest oil has been very very good to me."

After that sobering comedy routine, Gore said
:

It's important to try to move away from the idea that personal actions by each of represent solutions to this crisis. In addition to changing the light bulbs, it's far more important to change laws. The one way to solve the climate crisis is to put a price on climate.

I think we need to put a price on carbon, and it needs to be effected globally so those who don't pay a price for carbon don't have an advantage over those who do.

Excellent point Mr. Gore. And who is going to make the necessary changes and laws?

One thing is for sure. I'm so happy we are able to call you our own.

The way HC is trying to get the Michigan and Florida delegates after their primaries were decertified is disgusting. Every day I despise her and BJ Bubba more and more. If she wins, I will not support her nor vote for her. I cannot do it. I know I mentioned the three new Supremes as guaranteeing my Dem vote but HC has gone so far that I might trust McCain to make better choices.
I might just stay home and vote for no one if HC gets the nod.
JE and BO are flawed as well but none are more disgusting then HC.

It seems like unification on BO should happen to stop HC now.  I still remeber watching with anger as the Clinton's machine took down Paul Tsongas in 1992.

In the United States of America  Fascist Plutocratic Totalitarianism = Authoritarian Orthodox Democracy with Orthodox Freedom and Justice For ALL

The definition of orthodoxy is "the hold of correct or generally accepted beliefs" and the rub is, who gets to set the orthodox line?  When there is a small group of people setting the orthodox doctrine for democracy the very act of setting an orthodox doctrine is antethetical to democracy, which is dynamic; rather than orthodox.

Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology that can be used as a weapon against the individual subordinate to the interests of the state, party or society as a whole. Fascists seek to forge a type of national unity, usually based on religious, ethnic, cultural, and/or racial attributes. The key attribute of fascism is intolerance of other religions, nationalities, languages, political views, economic systems, cultural practices, etc. Various scholars attribute different characteristics to fascism, but the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: nationalism, statism, militarism, totalitarianism, communism or anti-communism, corporatism, populism, collectivism, and opposition to political and economic liberalism.

Authoritarianism describes a form of social control characterized by strict obedience to the authority of a state or organization, often maintaining and enforcing control through the use of oppressive measure.  In an authoritarian form of government, citizens are subject to state authority in many aspects of their lives, including many matters that other political philosophies would see as erosion of civil liberties and freedom.  Usually, an authoritarian government is undemocratic and has the power to govern without consent of those being governed.

Totalitarianism is state regulation punishable by law with fines and/or imprisonment  of nearly every aspect of public and private behavior; e.g; a butt crack law, a baggy pants law, etc. Totalitarian regimes or movements maintain themselves in political power by means of secret policepropaganda disseminated through the state-controlled mass media, personality cults, regulation and restriction of free discussion and criticism, single-party states, the use of mass surveillance, and widespread use of fear and terror tacticsPeople are forced to do what the government tells them and may also be prevented from leaving the country.

Totalitarianism is rule by a single political party, ["the Party" is ONE, the Inner and the Outer] the Inner-Republican Party and the Outer-corporate led and cooperating DLC Republican Wing of the Democratic Party -- in essence "ONE PARTY", saying the LEFT and the RIGHT are "ONE".   Votes for alternative candidates and parties are simply not allowed, as has happened in the current PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENTIAL PRIMARY ELECTION.   Citizens are allowed and 'encouraged' to vote, but ONLY for the government's chosen orthodox candidates, which is what is happening  in the United States, where it is and can be a violation of the law, punishable by fine or imprisonment to "write in" one's candidate of choice when one doesn't agree with the orthodox choices.

Her ice cold eyes give away her resentment at having someone getting in her way in this primary. We've had more hate for the last seven years than this country can stand.

Can't robo calls be made illegal?  I'm not going to trash HC and call her names but I don't think I could vote for her...and what will you BO supporters do if it's a HC/BO ticket?

A JE/BO ticket brings in white and black voters, men and women and let's be honest.  It's already about race and sex.   A JE/BO ticket brings in a diversity of voters.  An HC/BO ticket is going to piss a lot of people off.  What BO supporters want to vote for Prez HC...and then likely lose?

It's very timely to now talk about electability.  To not do so is to stick one's head in the sand.  People thought Kerry was electable.  Do the dems really think BO or HC are?  Or is this all wishful thinking?

There's a diff between talking about electability when one is talking about a electable cand. or when one isn't, as in Kerry's case.  Also, the voters started talking about his electability even before IA or shortly thereafter. This is a totally different situation and this time we have an electable cand and two who prolly aren't. So....true to dem thinking, people are supporting the unelectables while trying to toss out JE (just like Howard)

Totally different.  No contradiction except in your own mind.

..this is my in box.  Now lets's see if BO and HC will put their votes where their mouths are............

President Bush wants the Senate to pass retroactive immunity for telecommunication companies who spied on Americans. For the President, this isn't just about letting his friends at AT&T and Verizon off the hook. He knows this is the American people's last chance to hold the Bush administration accountable for their warrantless wiretapping of innocent Americans.

The key vote is scheduled for late Monday afternoon and the count is down to the wire. We need 41 Senators to stand up to President Bush and right now we have only 36.

Senators Clinton and Obama are the missing votes. If Senator Clinton or Obama stands up and leads from the floor of the U.S. Senate and calls upon the 8 senators that have endorsed their campaigns to stand with them, we'll have the votes we need and the American people will win.

Democracy for America will not stay silent and hope our Presidential candidates will lead. We demand it. That's why we're running this ad in the New York Times on Monday.

Take action now and make sure the media pressures Senators Clinton and Obama too. Contact the major media outlets below to make sure they know what you want our presidential candidates to do and include the ad link.

Billy Bragg - Waiting For The Great Leap Forwards       http://hypem.com/track/460200       http://blogger.xs4all.nl/werksman/archive/2008/01/08/339812.aspx

It may have been camelot for jack and jacqueline
But on the che guevara highway filling up with gasoline
Fidel castros brother spies a rich lady whos crying
Over luxurys disappointment
So he walks over and hes trying
To sympathise with her but he thinks that he should warn her
That the third world is just around the corner

In the soviet union a scientist is blinded
By the resumption of nuclear testing and he is reminded
That dr robert oppenheimers optimism fell
At the first hurdle

In the cheese pavilion and the only noise I hear
Is the sound of someone stacking chairs
And mopping up spilt beer
And someone asking questions and basking in the light
Of the fifteen fame filled minutes of the fanzine writer

Mixing pop and politics he asks me what the use is
I offer him embarrassment and my usual excuses
While looking down the corridor
Out to where the van is waiting
Im looking for the great leap forwards

Jumble sales are organised and pamphlets have been posted
Even after closing time theres still parties to be hosted
You can be active with the activists
Or sleep in with the sleepers
While youre waiting for the great leap forwards

One leap forward, two leaps back
Will politics get me the sack?

Here comes the future and you cant run from it
If youve got a blacklist I want to be on it

Its a mighty long way down rock n roll
From top of the pops to drawing the dole

If no one seems to understand
Start your own revolution and cut out the middleman

In a perfect world wed all sing in tune
But this is reality so give me some room

So join the struggle while you may
The revolution is just a t-shirt away
Waiting for the great leap forwards

Sometimes I think back to the 2000 Pres. election. How different it all could have been. Bush, being awarded, not elected to the Presidency. Awarded by a 5-4 Daddy Bush appointed Florida State Supreme Court. Of the nine judges, the five who awarded it to junior were all appointed to their positions by Juniors daddy. The four remaining judges who weren't appointed by daddy Bush, all awarded it to Gore.

Gore would have never rushed the U.S. into the disastrous unnecessary invasion of Iraq. He publicly opposed it from the start. He wouldn't have ignored global warming either. He certainly wouldn't have relaxed all the pollution standards by the biggest Corporate polluters like Dumbya did either. Yes, it all could have been so different. We need to get paper ballots with a verifiable trail for re counts in all fifty states soon. We need to make it impossible for the Republicans and Diebold to ever steal another election from 'We The People" ever again!
