Exciting Talk Radio News - From Florida
Amazingly, we are going to have a 24 hour progressive/Democratic/labor friendly radio station on the air in Jacksonville, Florida for the rest of 2008! It will be run by a great Democratic talk show host and my friend Andy Johnson.
For those of you who followed the 2000 Florida Election mess, Jacksonville was key! Republicans pulled every dirty trick in the book there and invented some new ones. With a fair, honest vote in Jacksonville, our entire nation would have been spared the Bush-Cheney disaster of the past 8 years.
I urge everyone to listen by streaming the station on the Internet. Buy ads if you can and urge others to do so.
If you have a website, you might want to buy a 30 second ad for $25 to promote it. If you belong to a union, please consider asking your union at every level to buy some ads..... especially issue ads promoting fair trade, the Employee Free Choice Act, healthcare reform, higher minimum wages and general union ideas like "Unions- the folks who brought you the weekend" or "unionize to preserve the American middle class." All Democratic clubs and progressive organizations everywhere can help Democrats carry Florida by financially supporting the station and get national exposure for their club in the process.

Here is the press release I received from Andy:
"Andy Johnson, former member of the Florida House, has now taken over AM 1460 WZNZ in Jacksonville, turning it into the only progressive talk station in North Florida, starting up on Monday, January 14. People in North Florida can tune in at AM 1460. People anywhere can tune in on the station's http://www.1460.us website which is rapidly being tweaked and improved. Johnson will feature Ed Schultz, noon-3, the most famous antidote to Rush in America, and then Johnson's own show, Down to Business Andy Johnson, 3-6 p.m. Throughout the day Johnson will load up 1460 with more hours of live local talk than any other station in North Florida. It is important for progressives to show support for people willing to take the risk of offering Progressive Talk."

Chris Matthews ‘infuriated’ by Olbermann’s ’success.’
In an upcoming profile of MSNBC host Keith Olbermann in Men’s Journal, “a senior executive at MSNBC” says that “Keith runs MSNBC.” “It’s been an amazing turnaround, because two years ago they were going to cancel him,” the executive said. “Because of his success, he’s in charge. Chris Matthews is infuriated by it.”

The previous thread seems the appropriate place for your response. But I must admit you've done an excellent job of convincing yourself. It's probably good that you've decided to take your ball and move on.

It's impossible for anyone to lay a glove on him when he has the stage to himself.
This is a good example of the nonsensical political mongering that runs rampant and should always be checked.

Thanks for posting that story, Susan.
I knew Mark when I was on the Lyons District 101 Elementary School Board from 1994-1997. (I hope that answers the "did you ever run for office and win" question anyone might have. I ran and won against 5 candidates and still have the ballot)

Good for Jacksonville. Great news actually.
So Dennis gets to choose the precincts? Did some precincts use only Diebolds and others only hand counted? I thought the rules said that you had to be 3 points or less from the *winnner* to be eligible to call for a recount.
I'm totally confused.
Please post again the place where we can send recount money help. Thanks.

Phil, who would start the racketeering charges? Are you in communication with the Edwards campaign? What is Trippi saying or doing if anything?
Even tho I'm not an strong BO supporter, the slime starting about him is disgusting and I fear will get worse. And in the final analysis, I think HC will best him (if JE doesn't pick up lots of steam) and then I agree with Mike. She'll lose the gen'l for a number of reasons.
Audrey, I like your idea! Gore/Howard The CM couldn't trash Howard again w/o trashing Gore and I doubt they'd do that, especially with the dem voters wanting Gore VERY BADLY.
*************************
And....lastly............I think JE has a good chance of getting the nod becuz, in the privacy of the voting booth, racism and sexism will rear their nasty ugly heads. Edwards wins becuz he's a *white male* and has the best Iraq and health policies....and he's the most progressive of the three IMO. Can he beat the repubs? Perhaps the country is ready for a black VP...start off slowly since people say they want change, but slowly I think. Throwing both a white woman and a black man at them at the same time may be a bit overwhelming to a country that still doesn't pay woman equal wages in the market place and locks up blacks whether they're guilty or not. And then there's Katrina. The people should have demanded the occupants of the BH's heads on a platter just for that alone. I wonder what BO would have done had he been prez during Katrina. What would he do now to start addressing the inequities? Does he ever talk about that?

Please enumerate the specific plans that Obama has outlined.
18. They haven't said the answer yet Sitka but I'm pretty sure you are not correct this time--please keep playing though--your participation brings light and joy to the blog.
Here are the Republican write ins for Democratic candidates for president:
Obama: 1,800
Clinton: 1,743
Edwards: 696
Ruchardson: 191
Kucinich: 13
On the Democratic side:
McCain: 932
Romney: 611
Paul: 267
Huckabee: 242
Giuliani: 161
I would be remiss as a Clinton person if I did not point out that both Senators Clinton and Obama showed an about equal ability to attract Republican votes.
The write ins for v.p. are not up yet.
So, there you go!
John wrote "Please enumerate the specific plans that Obama has outlined."
Every last one? Why do you make people do your work for you?
Please enumerate the specific plans that Obama has outlined.
Some supporter of his can do it if they want. I'm sure they'll link you to his web site just as those of the other candidates would.
Why don't you demonstrate the charge that he has none beyond some cut and pasted opposition planted editorial?
I'm willing to be convinced, but I'm not going to just accept it at face value.
Steve,
We just setup two forums, one for you and the other for Democratic Talk Radio.

We also put a link to you and DTR on the Main Page of DW. It's on the middle right.
Why don't you demonstrate the charge that he has none beyond some cut and pasted opposition planted editorial?
Now I wonder which of Obama's opponents planted the piece in the "Black Agenda Report".
I can't see Hillary or John Edwards as having much traction there. Dennis does, but I doubt he'd plant that sort of thing.
You're channeling Fred here in criticizing cut-and-paste posts.
As I've said before, I'd rather quote an authoritative, knowledgeable source, Than run my mouth (or keyboard) based on incomplete knowledge of the issue.

No it isn't. The link to the plan is right in your rejoinder. Even if you don't bother, anyone else is free to determine the bankruptcy of your charge.
Hi,
Just a quick hello. We have caucus training tonight, so have to get ready for it.
Am delighted to hear that Dennis Kucinich has called for a recount. Are we getting courage from our Dems now? Yea.
Was sad to see Bill Richardson drop out last night. I like him a lot. He's funny, real, has great experience as a diplomat, member of Congress, and as a governor of a bilingual, actually mulit-lingual state with Native Americans, Hispanics, Anglos, and other ethnic cultural groups.
I guess I have to ask, why didn't he get more play? I hope he'll help the federal government out in some way because we need his talents and humanity.
Noticed this morinng inthe Reporter-Herald "Moaning" Mona Charon has insinuated and inferred more than once that HIllary Clinton is a patriot, but Barack Obam is not because he wants to get rid of all nuclear weapons, says that American security depends on the world being secure, and he will talk to anyone including Chavez, Amadinejad, and maybe the other was Castro. It begins!
Sorry for the anger last night. I am arrogant about hating arrogance. Ah, "The gift to gie us, to see ourselves as others see us." "To A Louse" by Robert Burns.
Seems to me, Huton John, that all great speeches: The Gettysburg Address", Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream", Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" and a hundred others are mostly ideals, generalities, and, if you insist, platitudes. Why is Obama somehow superficial and an empty cask because his speechs express those ideals?
Sorry, slip of the fingers, Huron John

Im not applauding Edwards' war vote...............but, as compared to lets say JFK starting with the Bay of Pigs and later, the big boner.......Vietnam.....................Americans will have to decide to posibly just put that behind them...................I dont buy Edwards' excuses or anybody elses about the vote.............but thats history, time to move on........................
To me, Obama is just as much to blame...............signing off on everything since...IF he had led a challenge to pull out, but he didnt..he played it safe, and I find that very questionable...............

Statements on motherhood! What a disgrace. You obviously mean to imply these are the kind son of mill foreman John Edwards and national anthem singing Dennis Kucinich wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

We are entering a phase in the American-Israeli relationship in which Israel must begin reassessing an alliance that, while usually of immense benefit to Israel, today, with American resolve flagging in the Gulf, could ominously be turning into an American-imposed military straightjacket. Israel might soon find itself in the position of being allied with a patron who simultaneously will not strike at its most dangerous enemy, but will not consent to allowing Israel to do so itself by permitting the overflight of American airspace in Iraq. The manner in which the Iranian threat is challenging the U.S.-Israel alliance should be foremost on the minds of Israeli political and military leaders. Obviously this is an obsession of Bibi's, as it should be. For Olmert, we should not be nearly so confident
Hillary's economic plan..Found it on MSNBC
According to the campaign, the plan includes:
#1 was something that should of done when the economy tanked in 1972, 1992 and 2001.
#2 is something I have been recomending here for the last two months. There is no sense forclosing on homes that will stsy vacant.
#3 is important for Michiganders as a lot of local heat relief is exhausted.
#4 recognises the economy sucks for most people. Retraining dollars helped a lot of people start new careers in the early 1990s. This is something Bubba did. The trick is getting retrained in something of value where the person lives.
1 Establishing a $30 billion housing crisis fund to help states and localities deal with the fallout of foreclosures. The federal money could be used to ease the effects of vacant properties with anti-blight programs and helping local housing authorities buy and rent out vacant properties.
2 Setting a 90-day moratorium on subprime mortgages of at least five years, or until housing lenders have converted mortgages into loans families can afford. The proposal also would increase the portfolio caps at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
3 Providing $25 billion in emergency energy assistance for families facing rising heating bills. While 37 million families are eligible for energy assistance, only 5.6 million, or 16 percent, are slated to receive any aid this winter, the campaign said. She is proposing immediate grants to all 37 million eligible families.
4 Providing $10 billion to extend unemployment insurance for those struggling to find work while supporting families.
Mike wrote "To me, Obama is just as much to blame...............signing off on everything since."
Just to be clear, Mike's theory is that voting on funding measures for troops in theater is the immoral equivalent of a vote ceding the authority to invade and overthrow the government of a foreign sovereign, costing the lives of tens of thousands of people.
dog wrote "Hillary's economic plan..Found it on MSNBC."
Aren't these a bunch of platitudes and motherhood statements?
This is interesting:
Noticed this morinng inthe Reporter-Herald "Moaning" Mona Charon has insinuated and inferred more than once that HIllary Clinton is a patriot, but Barack Obam is not because he wants to get rid of all nuclear weapons, says that American security depends on the world being secure, and he will talk to anyone including Chavez, Amadinejad, and maybe the other was Castro. It begins!
You see, there are people who have convinced themselves that the
U.S. having the most nuclear weapons and the willingness to use
them has prevented World War III and nuclear armageddon. They
believe this because they are convinced that all men (themselves
excepted) are born evil and must be controlled/contained/ruled
to make them do good.
Of course, this is only a rationalization to justify their use of power.
Nevertheless, it is a conviction and needs to be recognized.
In browsing today I saw a short report about how the Congress
had removed money for any new nukes from the budget. It's not
being talked about much because they don't want public discussion.
So, if they're bringing it out in relation to Obama, I say good. It's
a topic that needs to be discussed.
Bush/Cheney has merely done their usual--nothing. That must be
very frustrating to the nuclear option faction.
Now I wonder which of Obama's opponents planted the piece in the "Black Agenda Report".
You posted it. You should be able to name the person and realize that the Clinton's have many African American supporters and political operatives. Not saying that person is one, just that the charge lacks "specifics."
I can't see Hillary or John Edwards as having much traction there
Yeah, I'm sure that the wife of "the first black president" has no traction there.
You're channeling Fred here in criticizing cut-and-paste posts.
Not channeling at all. I just think even cut and pastes should provide facts. But when they don't you need to provide your own to back them up when a "specific" charge is involved.
As I've said before, I'd rather quote an authoritative, knowledgeable source, Than run my mouth (or keyboard) based on incomplete knowledge of the issue.
Then why in heavens name are you doing the latter?
33,
It is good to have a vision and draw people to you. Eventually, there ahs to be some beef.
What HC did, and this is very smart, was take the vision thing away from Obama by saying past works don't tie in to the vision.
She is showing that Obama talks beautifully, but delivered very little. What is hard to get out is Obama delivered a lot in the State Congress but has been a go alon with the flow guy in the Senate.
As far as vision, how about the vision of Obama escorting Rice to the Senate confirmation hearings. How does that one take?
Obama has got to show that he can deliver on his vision. I like Hillary more then before because this is not a triangulation slice-and dice but a punch in the guts. There may be hope for her yet.
It is good to have a vision and draw people to you. Eventually, there ahs to be some beef.
Flashback! 1984!
"WHERE'S THE BEEF?"
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Ironically, the "Where's the beef?" canard was posed against none other than Gary Hart, one the most substantive politicians of our time.
In the name of god, don't go there!
40,
I don't think so....don't know what you mean. Looks pretty specific to me. There is at least some magnitude to the proposals.
And, they will probably help folks stay in their homes, pay the gas bill, and get some dough when there are no jobs.
Obamas site list things most politicans running as Dems would list. I don't have any problem with it. I like what Edwards wants to do better. The question is how sincere are Edwards and Obama.
BTW, Obama doesn't like NAFTA but agreed to give Peru NAFTA benefits. No meat there.

IF Obama felt that strongly oposed to the war...........hr should have been leading the charge to withdraw all US forces.............within the year.............this is the area many are having trouble with Obama on...................I dont remeber seing him at any of the protest marches across the country either.
The phrase comes form an old Wendy's commerical (?).
The question is valid.
The question has to be who can deliver?
Edwards: Talks great, but didn't do much in his last fling
Obama: Talks great but did well in the minors but has been a follower in the majors.
Hillary: Will only do it if there is something in it for her from the lobbiests. May be the most dishonest. Up to now had a politcal tin ear, and sold out many who supported her earlier.
They all suck, but are they better then any Repub?
On three issues that are most impoartant to me..yes.
Iraq war (Edwards is potentially the best), health care (Edwards potentially again) and Supreme Court judges (better then any Repub).

Don't have to go after her: she isn't going to win. Too much hidden misogyny. Never going to be talked about or admitted. But in the dark secret voting booth. . . .
Mind you, there are real political reasons why she shouldn't, but that wont be why. . . .
I had a discussion with a women from her church who left an abusive husband. We support a shelter for abused women that helps them get started, and not be forced to return to their bad situation.
She favors Hillary because she is empathetic to Hillary's relation with Bubba.
The idea of infidelity is something I can't comprehend in a relationship. After 32 plus years with the same person, my reason for being would go if something happened to break the bond.
So I cannot comprehend how one person could be so cruel to subject his family to the pain and embarrasemt of running around with other women. The question I always had is why is he still alive? She should have wasted him or at least kicked his sorry butt out the door.
But this friend told us that it is very hard to leave because you want the situation to work so bad. So maybe I'll cut Hillary a little slack in this matter, but not the double dealing or the center-of-the-road take no position that will cost me lobby money. I wish she would take the forsale sign off her neck.

You're welcome. That Lipinski has one of the worst voting records for a Democrat that I have ever seen. His record doesn't come anywhere near reflecting the Democratic Party's platform.
Go Pera!
My sister-in-law has been asking about Iran-Contra, so I had a look.
First pass it looks like this endeavor which only lasted for about 14 months
was a dry-run for the Bush Two administration and the genesis of the idea of
sequestering information from the Congress with all kinds of Presidential
findings. Iran-Contra came unravelled because the intermediaries were
unreliable. There are some people who are pissed that the connections to
the drug traffic that provided most of the money weren't followed up by
Kerry.
The Iranian middleman claimed that he marked up the price of the weapons
and turned over the excess profit for use by the Contras. Without any
evidence what-so-ever, I'd say that Gorbanifar's story is to be discounted.
More likely the money for the CIA operations came from elsewhere and
the illegal dealings with Iran seemed a less bad explanation, somewhat
consistent with the story that Reagan had done a deal with Iran to have the
hostages released at a specific time. Lies that are more likely to be
believed are preferable to those that aren't or are closer to the truth.
When I say dry-run, I mean that that caper revealed where the holes
would be and enabled them to be plugged more successfully.
The problem we have with these people is that they're not in it for the
money or the notoriety. They just like being deceptive and the more
people they manage to fool, the better they like it.
