America Wins the First Round

Written by: Jo*in*Vermont on Jan 10, 2008 10:28 AM EST

Hip, hip hooray! In spite of the direst of predictions, Democrats came out of Iowa and New Hampshire with no one crowned the front runner, no ‘presumptive leader" chosen, long before so many of us get the chance to vote.

That's makes us winners, in my book. For months we thought Hillary would skate to the nomination, thanks to the corpmedia political frenzy. For a week we thought the same might happen with Obama. So here we are on January 10th and the race is still wide open - there's still time to hear more and learn more and make our decisions carefully.

That's not to say we didn't lose, too. We lost several good candidates whose voices were so important in learning as much as we have about all of the candidates. My respect and thanks to those who have (and will soon) drop out of the race.

And a Special Big Thanks to Howard Dean! (who is first here, by the way!) Thank you Governor - here's looking forward to many more states having record turnouts and meaningful conversations with our candidates.

Dean is first.

I've been visiting over at KOS where somebody's paying attention to Iraq.

More questions need to be asked.

I don't know why these stories didn't get wider distribution.  Charles J. Hanley wrote them under the auspices of the Associated Press and ABC has them indexed.  But, they don't all show up in Google if you just put in his name.  Also, for some reason, the dates are missing on the print versions which I've linked to here.  I've chosen those because yesterday, some of the sites suddenly disappeared (could not be found on this server)

Let me know If you can't find them.  I've archived them on Hannah.

"All anyone needs to do w/Hillary's "tearing up" video is to watch the stupid thing. People cannot turn raw emotions on and off like a faucet (within seconds)--then to launch into what could appear as a "coded" racist smear. Time the lag--it's obvious.

When people choke up like that, tears automatically follow; or they exit from the immediate milieu; and gather their composure in another part of the room for a bit (or continue to cry; and request some tissues).

Raw genuine emotions initiate from a physiolocial/emotional/psychological reaction. They don't simply stop ("free will"), if they're authentic (hence, the cliche' "crocodile tears").

That didn't occur. Clinton hardly took a breath or two before she continued to lambaste Obama upside the haid."

Yep, like Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally" doing her fake orgasm! :o)

Those voices just didn't sound right on the tapes that were released.  Anyone that has ever been on a speedboat would almost have to be screaming into the microphone to be heard over the wind.  Those voices didn't sound like that at all.....

So it doesn't surprise me that Bushco was trying to turn this into a preamble for a Tonkin like episode.

The Iranian boats were stationary in the initial part of the encounter.  It was on Iranian TV just today.  A guy in a boat talking into a wireless headset asking for their identification #'s.  But that information does not help with the paraniod illlusion, so forget about it.  Those Iranians, you  got to love those guys, they are just a bunch of jihaadist keeping to themselves.

And we in Florida are still wondering who to vote for....whether it matters at all in the scheme of things.  We wonder how the media here can start up a whole new round of Dean-hating just when other had died down.  It is so frustrating.

Bill Nelson is glad he sued the DNC...Karen Thurman, chairman, has no regrets at all.

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/1750

It never occurs to either of them that they took away the power of the people to vote for their choice in return for lots of media hype.....

I have a post up at HEP about things Howard Dean said in 03.    Sometimes we forget how surely he had his pulse on the finger of this country and on right and wrong.

Stuck in Florida, figuring how to vote.

An Update from Washington
By Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter

Last year, the House of Representatives passed many important measures that affect our lives here in New Hampshire. From lowering the cost of student loans, to raising the minimum wage, to protecting middle-class families from the Alternative Minimum Tax, Congress addressed a wide range of issues that will benefit New Hampshire families.

To help families afford the rising costs of higher education, we passed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act, which will cut interest rates in half for federal student loans, and save a typical student in New Hampshire $4,430 over the life of a loan. The bill will also increase funding for Pell Grants for low-income students and provide loan-forgiveness for talented students who pursue public service fields like teaching or emergency response.

Congress passed legislation to protect 23 million families from a tax increase of up to several thousand dollars this year under the Alternative Minimum Tax. In July, we raised the federal minimum wage, increasing it from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour by 2009. At the same time, Congress also passed tax credits for small businesses. To find out how businesses can take advantage of the new tax benefits, visit www.sba.gov or contact my office at (603) 641-9536.

With energy prices rising, Congress increased the fuel efficiency standards for vehicles for the first time in thirty-two years. I’m also pleased that we passed an increase in funding for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which supports New Hampshire’s Fuel Assistance Program. If you or someone you know needs help affording the cost of heating fuel this year, please contact the New Hampshire Office of Energy and Planning at (603) 271-8317.

It was a busy year in my New Hampshire offices in Manchester and Dover as well, where we assisted over 1,200 individuals with inquiries to federal agencies including the passport office, Social Security, Medicare, and the VA. To avoid delays in getting your passport on time this year, please see the Frequently Asked Questions section of my website for more information.

Representatives from my office regularly visit towns across the First District to assist constituents in working with the federal government. For more information about the services that my office provides, please visit: www.shea-porter.house.gov.

To keep up to date on the latest developments in Washington, you can also track legislation using the Thomas search engine provided by the Library of Congress at www.thomas.gov.

I am honored to serve you in Congress, and I wish you a happy and prosperous year in 2008.

Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter represents the First Congressional District of New Hampshire, which includes communities from Manchester to the Seacoast and through the Lakes Region up to Conway. Her Manchester and Dover District Offices can be reached by calling (603) 641-9536.

I love this part. Don't know it didn't post.
From Ned Lamont:
We have seen that Sen. Obama has the wisdom and judgment to get the big decisions right - as he did on Iraq more than five years ago. And when President Obama steps out of Air Force One in countries around the world, he will represent a fresh start with friends and allies. He will end the war in Iraq, work for a comprehensive peace in the Middle East, and start investing in America again - and we will be safer and stronger for it.

Just talked to a friend who said, " I listened to Obama today copping parts of MLK's speeches and he lost me today.  He doesn't know who he is."

So there you are.  I wonder where that speech is.

Her son says it's gonna be the most exciting race in his young lifetime.  He thinks that at the 11th hour, Gore and Newt will jump in and if that if that happens,  they'll both vote for Gore.

Linda, we need Gore info and sightings.

I've always thought that if it looks like HC will get the nod, Gore would jump in to stop her.

Wonderful insight, your friend has.  Again, co-opting someone's psyche.  Where on earth does such arroagance come from?!!

It feels to me like theft, to say what someone thinks, feels, and the issues of a particular soul.  It feels oppressive, authoritarian, fascist, ugh!

Good issue of Newsweek, looks at all the canidates but focuses on Obama.  Some nice insights and descriptions with both faults and virtues.  Obama's quite human.

Seems to me every canidate has stolen Howard Dean's words for four years.

Grump.

One characterization of Edwards speaking style was Wlliam Jennings Bryan cp,[arospm/  I'm wondering if style doesn't have a huge role to play in political elections.

The CMWs also ran off Dodd and other good candidates.

The CM is run by a few RW defense corporations.

Considering one of those American Naval vessels each has the capacity to wipe out 1/2 of Europe...................its not really much of a match now is it?  Still, taking the Cole into account.....one of the Iranian boats comes within, say, 500-1000 yards.......warn it off, if it still proceeds toward the ship, a shot across the bow.......if it continues................take measures to protect yourself.................blow it out of the water.

There are still three candidates and if everyone continues to vote for the candidate of their choice almost every state will likely get to vote before a majority of the delegates are allocated.

and remember Super Delegate endorsements don't count for much as they are no way locked in

should make for an interesting spring

Two races down. Forty-eight states left to go. Today, 1% of Americans have voted -- 99% have not.

And those 99% deserve to have their voices heard, because I have met too many Americans whose voices have not been heard in this democracy.

That's what this battle is all about -- and it's why I'm asking you to continue standing with me as we take this fight all the way to the Democratic convention and then on to the White House.

We stand at a crossroads in American history -- and we know what needs to be done. The only question is whether we have the backbone, the will, and the determination to go there. I want to be clear: I intend to be the nominee of our party.

That's why I'm asking you -- and your family and friends -- to continue with us in this campaign to create the kind of America all of us believe in. And as we do so, the millions of unheard voices in our country will finally be heard.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

John

Taped Voices May Not Have Come From Iranian Boats
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/011008R.shtml
Martha Raddatz and Jonathan Karl for ABC News report: "Just two days after the US Navy released the eerie video of Iranian speedboats swarming around American warships, which featured a chilling threat in English, the Navy is saying that the voice on the tape could have come from the shore or from another ship."

snippet  Note the bold.  What activity ?

We're saying that we cannot make a direct connection to the boats there," said the spokesperson. "It could have come from the shore, from another ship passing by. However, it happened in the middle of all the very unusual activity, so as we assess the information and situation, we still put it in the total aggregate of what happened Sunday morning. I guess we're not saying that it absolutely came from the boats, but we're not saying it absolutely didn't."

That is the joke of the century. The communication co's, can break the law, wiretap etc. and we can't do anything about it. But the gov't forgets to pay the bill, the wiretapping has to stop. Keith says that's the saving grace to capitalism. We need to take the stars out of the flag and replace them with $$$$$.
