Introduction to DFA community
Hi!
My name is Lisa Harney, and I will be a Field intern here at DFA for the next six weeks. I am currently a sophomore at Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont. I am studying anthropology and psychology with a focus on prejudice within and between cultures. I am very interested in social justice issues and grassroots activism, and I am sure that my internship will be a way to address those interests.
I was born in Ireland and moved to Massachusetts 10 years ago. I just became a US citizen in 2007. The current presidential campaign is my first ever opportunity to vote, and I plan to use that opportunity well!
Today is my first day at the office. I’m excited to learn more about political activism, and to play an active role in politics at DFA and beyond.

a shout out Thank You to the Hillary organizers, not only did they have name tags and stickers that made counting easier, and boxes full of food, they helped with the clean-up (as did the Biden, and Obama folk)
The janitor had finished mopping the hallway from our entry when we needed it as a caucus room for the unviable to try and organize, then we did a final Obama count by sending them into the hallway, and back through a door one at a time, and the poor guy had to fdo it one more time.
He deserves the biggest thanks (and he missed his own caucus because he was working and it was being held in a restaurant with a nice bar and by about the time it was winding down and I got a chance to thank him, we were both about ready to sit down to a cold one)
Bennington is a lovely town I got acquainted with at Deanfest One on the way to Pittsfield.
Lisa if you get a chance to meet Jessica Falkner while at DFA you can get a glimpse of an inspiring activist.
Deanfest is part of the reason we deaniacs have kept all of this going, and she was at the center
Interesting biography, welcome to America, your political instincts are a pretty good indication you are an asset wherever you show up.

Our founders came on the Mayflower, the Arabella, and the early clipper ships. But there were other boats, too. There was the Amistad and her cargo of kidnapped Africans, who commandeered the ship to sail home to Africa, but who were seized in Long Island Sound and imprisoned in New Haven.
On this very day 165 years ago, a young man named Kinna, who had been part of that rebellion, sent a letter from prison to our own John Quincy Adams, who had retired from public life at home in Massachusetts.Kinna pleaded with Adams to help the 36 captives from his ship to earn their freedom. Adams took the case all the way to the United States Supreme Court and won.As a gesture of thanks and respect, the Africans gave Adams a Bible, called the Mendi Bible, after their tribal homeland.I took the oath this morning with my hand resting on that same Bible -- and with my resolve strengthened by that same legacy. I am descended from people once forbidden their most basic and fundamental freedoms, a people desperate for a reason to hope and willing to fight for it. And so are you. So are you. Because the Amistad was not just a Black man’s journey; it was an American journey. This Commonwealth -- and the Nation modeled on it -- is at its best when we show we understand a faith in what’s possible, and the willingness to work for it.So, as an American, I am an optimist. But not a foolish one. I see clearly the challenges before us.

Castaneda wrote that Don Juan contended that our ordinary world –
...which we believe to be unique and absolute, is only one in a cluster of consecutive worlds, arranged like the layers of an onion. He asserted that even though we have been energetically conditioned to perceive solely our world, we still have the capability of entering into those other realms, which are as real, unique, absolute, and engulfing as our own world is.

I guess that's what happens when voters are hungry for change [smile].
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Gov. Deval Patrick says Barack Obama's victory in Iowa should put to rest any concerns about the "electability" of the Illinois senator.
Patrick gathered with other Obama supporters at a Harvard Square restaurant to watch the Iowa caucus returns Thursday night. The Massachusetts governor endorsed Obama in October and traveled to Iowa last weekend for a two-day campaign swing through the state.
...
Patrick has several events scheduled on behalf of Obama Saturday and Sunday in New Hampshire, which holds the nation's first presidential primary on Tuesday.![]()
Ohio's Governor sure didn't do Hillary any good when he visited Iowa, Deval Patrick needs to do better for Barack, lol

Deval already did better for Barack -- last weekend Deval stood with Barack at a rally in Iowa on 12/29 and then canvassed for him throughout the rest of the state on Sun 12/30.
Almost forgot. I read through the comments to welcome Lisa. So. welcome, young lady of Eire. May you prosper in your new land.
I'm trying to get into the literary mode. LOL

Major Congrats and welcome to Lisa. What an exciting time for you and luck for us.

LOL....we took the northern route from Pittsfield on our way to Burlington to vacation. Didn't they have a great Dunkin' Donuts? :)
....after several days in Burlington and the Teddy Bear Factory (still the fondest memories of that cute place), we drove back via Plattsburg where hubby visited College roomate that he hadn't seen in almost 30 years.
...but then again, also thanks to the Governor, it enabled us to visit with his favorite College Professor that actually welcomed us for a visit in his home, who still lives in Fredonia after all these years, and REMEMBERED hubby's brother. It helped me understand why my hubby had mannerisms that he did, when I never saw anyone else he/we ever hung out with, act they way he did. I wondered where he picked that up-from my first meeting with him, his habits of crossing his legs, leaning forward, rubbing his beard...When I sat in that living room, some almost 30 years later, I saw the strong influence of a teacher on someone. They both talked about studies, what he did back then, etc. I thought I was looking at twins and it still almost makes me cry. And I cannot believe how much that teacher remembered personally, of this one student that he had such a lifetime impact on.
Hey Lisa. I bet your still confused about who the hell called you to annoy you!
I know you'll do a great job, and good luck while you're up there. Welcome to the family.
Here are some tips for surviving at the DFA office:
1) Tell Ilya how wonderful Edwards, Clinton, and the rest of the field are. Don't mention Barack and call him inexperienced. He'll love you.
2) Call Charles Chucky.
3)Whine about every task they give you, even if you love it, because it'll keep them on their toes.
4) Don't mess with Elli. (Seriously).
5) Tell Arshad his hair is messed up.
6) Don't bond with Eileen. Them Irish folks ;)
7) Tell them how you're a great intern, and hope to live to one day be as good as me.
