The Clinton's are now playing the fear card. Be very afraid of the Senator with little experience - the world is a scary place. The world got scarier partly because Hillary voted for the Iraq War. Sound judgment there.

Did you know that in the Iowa caucuses, anybody is who not present that evening at 7:00 p.m.will be able to cast a vote.

That includes:

Servicemen and women serving overseas

Disabled if there are no provisions for them

Those who must work at that time

Whoever is out of state visiting Florida (for example:))

Possibly a father or mother who cannot both appear if they have young children

If they can get a babysitter, then the babysitter would not be able to vote

Whoever else cannot be present for whatever reason

You get the point I'm sure.

Caucuses are for American Indians of years gone by.

I read somewhere that many of the tensions in Pakistan are related to old disruptions caused when the partion forced all of the displaced persons into the old cultural patterns, and the tribal regions divorced themselves from that with self rule. Pakistan has cracks under the surface similar to Iraq.

True all over the globe I fear where Colonialism destroyed local cultures and then imposed artificial borders as they retreated . a North and South Vietnam come to mind

Pakistan by definition is a religious state and like Turkey we have their military to thank for keeping a secular nature if not a democratic one. The time for US condemnation was when Musharraf sacked the Supreme Court and we should have stood with their Constitution and Rule of Law but that would be difficult for a bushco trashing our own.

Like in America those religious questions are just under the surface, i.e. Huckabee, or how easy it is to trash the Constitution as Bush has done.

Iowa caucuses are for the purpose of choosing Democratic Party local legal representatives. (the presidential allocation of nomination convention delegates were added later)

as such it is a meeting of local party activists

thus the Iowa test is which Presidential candidate appeals to the base of the Party

 and other forms of primarys are different kinds of tests

since what is at stake is a system for picking the Democratic Party nominee I will argue that Iowa has the fairest test

that is a completely different issue from being first

Why should independents have any say in the selection of a Party nominee?

I'd love to see Howard viable in 2012. But it's unlikely. The dems are going to win in 2008, and that gives a dem another turn. Best we're likely to see is 2016. Wish that weren't true.

Not much of a difference. Let's give people someone to vote for.

To say that it has to be HD16 is to assume that a Dem victory is inevitable. That's not what Howard says.
If the Dems win, then they have to produce or it's bye bye Party. The electorate will not stand for another year like the last. What do you think will happen if we have a larger presence in Congress and Presidency, and the Republicans are still having their way, because the Dems now in charge are complicit? In the past, the incumbent was reelected, but I think this past year has changed a few things.
HD12 sounds quite likely, and a certainty if Hillary is elected. Don't forget she said "There's nothing wrong with the Dem.Party, it's fine just the way it is".

Bring it on! He should do it again! Later mention that it was a directional mic that the "media" didn't realize. Go after them too.

They shouldn't but they do in California. A lot of Decline to State voters were once Democrats. They left the party because of the Clintons. At least that is what they say when asked. Most all I've met are very proud of their new found independence and are not interested in building the grassroots of any political party. These folks always vote especially in primaries. DS voters are the fastest growing voting block in California.

Howard "owned" the scream when he was here in Charlotte speaking to a crowd who had never seen him in person. There was a problem with the mic, and when it was fixed Howard said, "That's good I thought I was going to have to scream and start yelling out the names of the States". The crowd loved it.

Here's how you deal with the DLC types and the Clintons. Just say this!

 "Buck up. We can throw every single election from now until kingdom come. The ball's in your court. Tick tock."

I'm all for independents deciding general elections, and would never deny a voter every opportunity.

I just think that the individual named on the ballot opposite the label DEMOCRATIC PARTY should be chosen by members of that party.

The Dems performance has cost them their 2006 advantage.  All three Dem Leaders are beatable.

The Dem party has demonstrated incompetence in government.  The DFA has aligned itself to the Dem Party rather than  with the American People.  

The Dems and the DFA may not survive this election.  Certainly the Incumbent Dems  have to be voted out no matter the Presidency.

I also can't understand these states who have crossover voting in primaries.

If someone has no viable candidate running on their own side of the fence, he/she could come vote for the other side's worst candidate with the hope that their own best of the worst could beat them in a general elec. Makes no sense for either party.

Mary, yes, I agree. Even though all the candidates did sign an oath, I think Hill and others would rid the DNC of the 50 state strategy.

I'm going off topic but what else is new? (btw...HD in '08 works for me).

I work for a highway dept. in Vermont as most of you know and every facet of my job involves weather. In order to maintain the roads, make them safe for the public, etc...we need to know what we are or might be dealing with re: weather. The experts have gotten this down where forecasting (predicting the future actually) is almost 100% within 24 hrs. Forecasting weather and the science in which it is done has become something most everyone...regardless of their political or religious beliefs depends on (and believe in).

And if this is true that most everyone is trusting of the science of weather for their daily forecast...how can they write off other things that used to be predictable and the science behind them, like exit polls which are accurate to 1/2 of 1% if not fudged with...I won't go into the 9-11 pea soup.

We need to make sure that religion (beliefs) is not taught in our public schools and that science (facts) is. I don't like the Bible thumpers on either side of the aisle...makes the truth hard to see!

All the Republican political rhetoric in California for years was that local and county offices should be non-partisan elections. The Democrats bought it and changed the laws. Changing the election code was a very bad idea for the Democratic Party as far as I am concerned. We lost our county farm teams of grassroots leaders. Some folks believed the rhetoric and left party politics all together. The truth is, there is no such thing as a non-partisan election, period. The Republican party will be the first to say it to their own members. Now most all of our candidates are trained staffers out of constituency offices. They just follow their old bosses lead. Most of the time their old bosses retire to the private sector and take up jobs as Corporate lobbyists. They don't even contact the local county parties. There is no need to do so. Their deals are with the state and national legislative election committees.

Then you sure do not want school vouchers or any charter schools. The religious schools are the first to apply for them.

I heard Elizabeth Edwards today saying that Kerry would not spend any money in Tennessee, Oklahoma, the Carolinas, Kansas because they were red states. Yet, they have Dem govs. who have won  running state wide. She said she & John believe just what Howard dean believes, that we should have a 50 state strategy & that's what they intend to do.

Also, I think when Senators decide to run for president, they should give up their salaries while they are running because they obviously can't do what their states elected them to do in the senate, so why should we be paying them....

Looks like we'll get some here in So. Vt., less than a foot below 1500 ft. Of course my highest rd. is 1600 ft., had 1/2 inch of snow before at my house at the base of the hill and 2 feet at the summit just a few miles away.
