Camp Wellstone

Camp Wellstone: Long Beach, California

12/7 - 12/9/07

Camp Wellstone is a training program that teaches progressives how to win on issues and elect good candidates. They use a distinctive approach to politics, based on Paul Wellstone's success at integrating grassroots organizing, electoral organizing, progressive public policy and ethical leadership.

The training is highly interactive, combining exercises, lectures, and simulations over the course of 2.5 days. Camp runs Friday from 2:00pm-9:00pm, Saturday from 9:00am-6:00pm, and Sunday from 9:00am-3:00pm.

The cost is $100 or just $50 for students, low-income, or unemployed participants. We are not able to guarantee your space for the the camp unless payment is received 2 weeks prior to the starting date. Camp participants are responsible for their own accommodations.

Wellstone Action trains progressives like us all over the country to run the best campaigns possible and they're coming to southern California. This is the only training they will offer in California in either 2007 and 2008.

You'll stay busy the whole time and make some great networks!

Camp Wellstone offers three tracks to help current or future candidates, campaign managers, and citizen activists learn everything they need to know to run an effective political or grassroots campaign.

Camp Wellstone is divided into three tracks:

  • Candidate track. This is for people who have made the decision to run for office.
  • Campaign track. This track focuses on how to be an effective staff or volunteer member of a winning progressive campaign.
  • Citizen activist track. For people interested in citizen lobbying, issue advocacy, and community organizing, this track provides skills in how to win on issues.

Details on each track are as follows:

  • Candidate Track - This track covers the fundamentals of campaigns, including fundraising, field organizing, campaign plan and budget writing, volunteer recruitment, GOTV, and media relations.
  • Campaign Management Track - The management track covers campaign fundamentals from the perspective of those who make it happen. Participants learn the skills that are essential to putting their candidate or team in the best position to win.
  • Citizen Activism Track - This track presents ideas and tactics needed to strengthen issue-based organizing. It develops the capacity of grassroots leaders to build a base, advocate within legislative bodies and build sustainable organizations. This track is recommended for individuals who are interested in moving a particular issue agenda forward.

I just got a call from Martha Gamez with the CDP. Elizabeth Kucinich is scheduled to appear at the CDP Campaign Skills Training happening this weekend in Fresno around 12:00 noon! She is an amazing human being.  I got to meet her at the CDP E-Board meeting held in Anaheim. She was the honored guest speaker during one of the General Sessions.  I hope you can attend.

About Mrs. Kucinich

Elizabeth Jane (Harper) Kucinich (born October 22, 1977 in North Ockendon, London) is the wife of Dennis Kucinich. They married on August 21, 2005.

Background

Elizabeth originates from North Ockendon in London, England. In 1996 she went to Agra, India, to volunteer at one of Mother Teresa's homes for India's poorest children. Upon earning her bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Kent, she spent 16 months in a rural Tanzanian village and worked as an advocate for regional development.

After leaving Tanzania, she volunteered with a British Red Cross refugee unit; earned a certificate in Peace Studies from Coventry University; and got a job as a fund-raiser for a seafarer's charity in London.[1] Her volunteer work often brought her to the House of Lords. At that time she heard financial analyst Stephen Zarlenga speak about monetary reform. She was impressed and soon was hired to become Zarlenga's assistant at the Chicago-based American Monetary Institute. That work took her and Zarlenga to Dennis Kucinich's office.

She married Dennis Kucinich in 2005, in Congressman Kucinich's hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.

Education

For high school, she attended Coopers' Company and Coborn School located in Upminster, Essex, from 1989 to 1996.

She attended the University of Kent at Canterbury in the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2001 and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Religious Studies and Theology and a Master's degree in International Conflict Analysis. Her thesis for her Master's was on "Conflict Resolution in World Politics".
