What's Your Label?

For as long as I've been old enough to remember I have always been interested in politics. If there was just one thing I never liked and would like to see stopped is the labeling of people involved in politics. Liberal, conservative, right wing, left wing, reactionary, obstructionists, neoliberals, neoconservatives, doves, hawks, so is all this name-calling good for our political system?

William McGowan from Scholastic Update said “As much as it might make for colorful verbal combat, the labeling game tends to make compromise between the two political parties difficult. It also tends to feed cynicism about government in general, making it appear as if public officials are more interested in pulling off witty one-liners than in addressing the national interest”. So what is your label? What do you want to be defined as?

For myself I went from the Democratic Party, to the Republican Party, back to the Democratic Party, and finally to an Independent I guess I could fit into all the labels mentioned. So where do we go from here?

Whatever label you see yourself as we all need to find common ground to get our government working for all the people. The time has come to put the labels aside and to move forward. Our country has many problems to solve and our Representatives can’t agree on anything, we are at a standstill. The time is short if we are to move our country into the future. The decisions made now will determine our children's and grandchildren’s futures. What kind of country will they find themselves living in? If we don’t start changing the way our government operates, their future is looking dim. The time has come for all Americans to stand up and come together for the good of our country.

The Democratic National Committee Chair, Gov. Howard Dean, M.D. is first!

----

About DFA: http://www.democracyforamerica.com/about...

What is Democracy for America?

Inspired by the presidential campaign of Howard Dean, Democracy for America (DFA) is a political action committee dedicated to supporting fiscally responsible, socially progressive candidates at all levels of government—from school board to the presidency. DFA fights against the influence of the far right-wing and their radical, divisive policies and the selfish special interests that for too long have dominated our politics.

DFA has a long-term goal to rebuild the Democratic Party from the bottom up—it will take time, but we must start building a base now for the future.

----

Who heads Democracy for America?

James H. Dean, Chair

As the chair of Democracy for America (DFA), Jim Dean is committed to carrying on what his brother, Governor Howard Dean, started - strengthening grassroots participation; and the recruitment and election of fiscally responsible and socially progressive candidates to all levels of government. This is a long-term investment that will pay off if we are willing to stand up for what we believe in and support candidates at every level of political office.

Governor Howard Dean, M.D., Founder

Governor Howard Dean founded Democracy for America in 2004 to build on the grassroots momentum for reform that his bid for the presidency sparked. The movement propelled DFA into a successful national organization committed to the "50 State Strategy." In February 2005 Governor Dean resigned from the leadership of DFA to chair the Democratic National Committee.

The candidates below have earned the DFA-List endorsement
and are a top priority for DFA members in 2007. http://www.democracyforamerica.com/candi...

Charlie Brown for Congress, CA-4

2007 Grassroots All-Star

In 2006, Charlie, a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel came within 3% points (just 9,000 votes) of upsetting 8 term incumbent John Doolittle, but helped Democratic Party regain the majority in both houses of Congress, and launching an unprecedented grassroots movement that has forever changed the electoral dynamics of the 4th Congressional District.

Mr. Rudds reach out to Mr. Gore and promising to make the Environment one of the most important issues he would address, garnered Mr. Gore's support and it seems to have paid off.

WOOOOHOOOO!!!! Rudd elected, Howard booted!

Rudd: I will be prime minister for all Australians

Howard concedes defeat to Labor Party in Australian elections
Howard's own seat in Sydney in doubt with half the ballots counted

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Opposition leader Kevin Rudd greeted jubilant supporters Saturday night, as he promised changes in environmental, education and workplace policies as Australia's new prime minister.

"I will be a prime minister for all Australians," he told the cheering crowd. "Let us be the generation that seizes the opportunity of today to invest in the Australia of tomorrow. That's the mission statement we have as the next government of this country."

-----------

Linda, though I have nothing against Rudd but the line to be "for all Australians/Americans/French/etc." is FOR MANY YEARS! a standard one for ANY new elected person in ANY of those countries having "advanced democracy"..., lol.

I am always suspicious when someone comes out of the woodwork and makes statements like Mr. Verdes has on this blog.

It is almost always the Republicans (neocons, conservatives, etc) who are the obstructionists. For them it is their way or the highway. Whether they are in the majority or minority, they pull every legal maneuver or dirty trick in the book to get their way. As is currently the habit of Republicans in the U.S. House of  Reps., they begin moving to adjourn for the day somewhere around noon.

So I don't buy into the sincerity of Mr. Verdes' blog. He writes that he himself was a Republican, then a Democrat, then an Indy. Independents are not a party so one can't hide behind that label as Verdes has.

There was a letter to the editor this morning in our newspaper from a woman asking for a vote for "Romney for President" because Bush I and  Bush II didn't work out, so, of course, Clinton I and Clinton II wouldn't work either. It is a ridiculous letter, but at least she didn't hide behind any neutral claims as Verdes has.

11. The question is will he do it all at once, or ad seriatim.

If "all at once" he'll end up a compromiser like Clinton.

Is that better than Bush Two who's only for his cronies? I don't know.

12. well, that would be like projecting and accusing every single candidate who states his 3 main campaign themes would be trying to do them all at once and would have to compromise too much to get it done as well.

Why state anyone wants to accomplish a thing. ?

==================

It can also be naivete. As for being suspicious of "once-Republicans" this would be foolish. We owe much of our recent success to those who crossed over.

Democrats were not always perfect. We started Viet Nam, and made lots of mistakes with inner city corruption and social programs (going back in time.) Reagan got into power for many reasons, some of which were valid, even if many of his supporters were insidiously deceptive, especially in the long run.

To feel superior to those were not "lifelong Democrats" is a paranoia and self-righteousness that mimics the GOP Social Darwinistic posturing, on a different level. I believe it is called Democratioc elitism. We cannot become a winning party with a prevailing attitude like that.

Most of the Southern States were once Democratic and became Republican, and the GOP owes much of its success to leaving the past in the past. You'll never hear them talk about Southerner with disdain as being "once Republican"

Doesn't appear as if the DFA Scranton, PA Meetups thrived, BTW.

Prospects for the Indy rendition look worse.

...not that I'm the least impressed w/Democrats' behaviors now, but "organizing" Indies is an oxymoron in redundancy & futility.
