Florida Netroots Awards Logo

(Thanks to Ybor City Stogie for the cool logo)

Below are the winners of the First Annual Netroots Awards, sponsored by the newly-chartered Florida Democratic Party Netroots Coalition. In this event there truly are no losers (except maybe Ray). All of the nominees were deserving and this is not simply a matter of there being only one good candidate in each category, but a matter of having to choose one candidate in each category. You really should be regularly reading (or working with) all the nominees.

Voting was incredibly tight in several categories, with more than 175 votes cast, some categories came down to only 1, 2 or three vote margins. Thats a sign of all the great work you people are doing out there -- it was often a difficult decision to determine who was "best" in a particular category.

For those who weren't at the Netroots Conference (more on that later), we do have beautiful hand-carved statue made out of the flesh of the great California Redwood trees for you... just kidding. We have a pretty certificate, suitable for framing. Without any further ado, the winners...
.
1. Winner Best National Blog: A very tough category, but Sinfonian, the host of Blast Off! Radio and the Blast Off! Blog, was the winner. All three nominees are great reads that you should be checking out on a daily basis. Blast Off! (http://flprogressive.blogspot.com/). Sinfonian is a DFA member.

2. Winner Best State Blog: A tight race, but we lost out by a few votes to everyone's favorite place of their daily news fix, FLA Politics. FLA Politics really is kind of the blogfather of Florida political blogging and big supporter of Florida Progressive Coalition, so the award is very deserving. FLA Politics (http://www.flapolitics.com/)

3. Winner Best Local Blog: This one came down to exactly one vote, but the winner was the McCook wife-husband team at Tampa Bay Blue. (http://tbdem.blogspot.com/). Kathleen is a DFA member.

4. Winner Best Media Blog: Adam looked a bit embarrassed when he picked up his certificate, but there isn't any place more political junkies go to get the latest on Sunshine State politics than The Buzz. (http://blogs.tampabay.com/buzz/)

5. Winner Best Professional Blog: This was the category that received the second-most votes of all the awards and the deserving recipient of much of that love was Larry Thorson of Miami-Dade Dems. (http://miami-dade-dems.blogspot.com/). Larry is a DFA member.

6. Winner Best Party Website: Never underestimate the power of humor in getting people interested in something. The award-winner that got the biggest audience reaction was Draft Katherine Harris, created by some of the FDP staff also got the most votes (http://www.draftkatherineharris.com/)

7. Winner Best Candidate Website: Another very close race that came down to the last minute, Chris Chiari's website was judged the best by the most voters and Chris made sure to thank Brian Franklin for making the site such a good one. (http://www.chiari08.com/). Chris is a DFA member.

8. Winner Best Local Party Website: The tightest race from top to bottom, the Nassau Democratic Party website beat out the East Hillsborough Democratic Club by one vote and the Marion County site by only three votes. (http://www.nassaudems.org/)

9. Winner Best Interest Group Website: Cammie Donaldson and crew are one of the most active grassroots groups in the state and their website is very well-made and very useful. Space Coast Progressive Alliance (http://www.spacecoastprogressivealliance.org/). Cammie is a DFA member.

10. Winner Best Writer: While I'm a little sad I didn't win this category, I didn't deserve to, since Litbrit is without a doubt the best writer we have in the Florida blogosphere. I voted for her myself. Now you need to start reading her writing much more frequently. (http://litbrit.blogspot.com/)

11. Winner Netroots Candidate of the Year: The winner of this one is someone you can find pretty much everywhere the Netroots is, Michael Calderin, and hopefully he'll soon be joining me in Tallahassee. (http://www.michaelcalderin.com/). Michael is a DFA Member.

12. Winner Netroots Activist of the Year: Another tough category with multiple deserving people. In the end, Susan Smith got the most votes and she is a deserving winner. Whether it be her work with DFA or Florida Progressive Coalition or Florida Progressive Radio or helping out at the convention or Yearly Kos or her big financial support of Netroots activities, there really isn't anything we do that Susan hasn't helped out with. Susan is a DFA member.

13. Winner Netroots Organization of the Year: Florida Progressive Coalition took this category this time around. Not surprising since, like the AARP, potentially every voter is a member of this organization. If you'd like to join the Coalition and post to the blog, e-mail us at quinnelk@hotmail.com. At least a third of the members of FPC are also members of DFA.

We will also have a button for you to put on your website, it just hasn't been created yet. I'll take a stab at it later today. If someone more artistic that myself would like to create the buttons, that would be great. Make one for each category and we'll e-mail the crappy ones I come up with or the cool ones someone else comes up with today or tomorrow

Just a drive by as I'm heading to a public television board meeting. I found out yesterday that a neighboring town (Keene, N.H.) that just recently got it's public access station up and running is selling all of it's equipment because the board members took the suggestion from the cable co. to get a one lump sum payment from them to operate the station. They now have no operating funds...wool pulled over the eyes of new board members by the cable co. I don't know how things work in N.H. so going to try and figure out how to keep the station on the air. Our new station manager was excited about going to get stuff cheap...I blasted him and said he should be more concerned about how to help keep them on the air. We want more public access not less!
Keene is a college town so what a plus to have access to a station for aspiring journalists, filmmakers, video technicians, etc. For years the municipality just put the $$$ in their coffers and a rookie mistake by board members erases it all...I hope not.

Before we get too excited about Leahey and others saying they'll vote no on Waterboy Mukasey......

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071102/ap_on_go_pr_wh/senate_mukasey

There is a way for Mukasey to get a full Senate vote even if committee Democrats are united in opposing him. The Senate Judiciary Committee could agree to advance the nomination with "no recommendation," allowing Mukasey the chance to be confirmed by a majority of the 100-member Senate. Several vote-counters in each party said Mukasey probably would get 70 "yes" votes.

Remember....we're dealing with DCDems here. Trust them only after they've delivered the goods.

Health update:  Dr. Hong (also an MD) put about 20 needles into my groin and said that I will get well again, but it will take time.  No dancing, no yoga, no walking, no yummy food yet, no stair climbing, no unpacking my bags...couch couch couch and I'll see him again in 5 days.

My Kaiser doctor is clearing some time to see me early next week since I want him in on this and he's wonderful, an MD AND an Ayurvedic doctor.  So I have 4 doctors in 2!!  LOL   He's good for palpating my tummy and maybe giving me some different meds and maybe there's a way to peek into my groin.  It feels like things have been moved about a bit.  Yuck.

News CNN Flash:

Mukasy or however it's spelled is likely to be confirmed.

I may not be posting a lot since I feel much better lying down.  But there is something I'm going hunting for right now...brb

This is very interesting and important news for free speech and shines a light on some nefarious AIPAC doings.

Rice Subpoenaed in AIPAC Lobbyists' Case By Jeralyn, Section Crime in the News
Posted on Fri Apr 21, 2006 at 08:16:08 PM EST
Tags: (all tags)

Defense lawyer Abbe Lowell, representing former AIPAC lobbyist Steven Rosen in a case in which he and fellow lobbyist Keith Weissman are charged with receiving and disclosing classified National Security information, has subpoenaed Secretary of State Condi Rice and other officials, alleging that they also disclosed such information. The Government sought to quash the subpoenas but it the Court has approved them.

The point is not to go after Rice, but to demonstrate to the judge that the law prohibiting disclosures is overly vague, and it is often not possible to discern what is legal from what is illegal to receive and disclose. The Judge has said he's close to tossing the Government's charges because of the vagueness and overbreadth of the law which may impermissibly infringe on protected free speech.

Rosen's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said the testimony of Rice and others is needed to show that some of the top officials in U.S. government approved of disclosing sensitive information to the defendants and that the leaks may have been authorized.

Prosecutors opposed the effort to depose Rice and the other officials. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin DiGregory also disputed Lowell's claim, saying, "She never gave national defense information to Mr. Rosen."

David Satterfield, deputy chief of the U.S. mission to Iraq, William Burns, U.S. ambassador to Russia and retired Marine Gen. Anthony Zinni were also subpoenaed by Lowell:

"Each of these individuals have real-life dealings with the defendants in this case. They'll explain what they told Dr. Rosen in detail," Lowell said. "On day one, Secretary of State Rice tells him certain info and on day two one of the conspirators tells him the same thing or something less volatile."

Lowell's point is:

... it is impossible for Rosen and Weissman to determine what is sensitive national defense information when they are receiving the information from government officials who presumably understand national security law and therefore would not improperly disclose national defense information.

As for the specific charges against Rosen and Weissman,

The indictment against Rosen, of Silver Spring, Md., and Weissman, of Bethesda, Md., alleges that they conspired to obtain classified government reports on issues relevant to U.S. policy, including the al-Qaida terror network; the bombing of the Khobar Towers dormitory in Saudi Arabia, which killed 19 U.S. Air Force personnel; and U.S. policy in Iran.

This is the first time the law has been used to prosecute lobbyists.

thanks to you also, Linda.

Too bad the invisible, undetectable "evil spirits" of toxins in the human ecology and natural environment are getting less attention than space aliens these days.

Europe is way ahead of us.  Cosmetic companies and the USA are now insidiously making two separate product lines, the regulated line for Europeans and the unregulated line (full of toxic, carcinogenic, neurotoxic, teratogenic chemicals)

The conventional legal thinking is that to take out the toxins from the American line is admitting harm and opening them to liability.

British marine biologists have found what may be the oldest living animal — that is, until they killed it.

The team from Bangor University in Wales was dredging the waters north of Iceland as part of routine research when the unfortunate specimen, belonging to the clam species Arctica islandica, commonly known as the ocean quahog, was hauled up from waters 250 feet deep.

Only after researchers cut through its shell, which made it more of an ex-clam, and counted its growth rings did they realize how old it had been — between 405 and 410 years old.

Another clam of the same species had been verified at 220 years old, and a third may have lived 374 years. But this most recent clam was the oldest yet.

"Its death is an unfortunate aspect of this work, but we hope to derive lots of information from it," postdoctoral scientist Al Wanamaker told London's Guardian newspaper. "For our work, it's a bonus, but it wasn't good for this particular animal."

SCHUMER AND FEINSTEIN TO BACK MUKASEY

Washington - Michael Mukasey drew closer to becoming attorney general Friday after two key Senate Democrats said they would vote for him despite his refusal to define an interrogation technique that stimulates drowning as torture.

The decision by Sens. Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein came shortly after the chairman of the committee, Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., announced he would vote against Mukasey, a former federal judge.

"This is an extremely difficult decision," Schumer said in a statement, adding that Mukasey "is not my ideal choice."

In announcing her support for Mukasey, Feinstein, D-Calif., said "first and foremost, Michael Mukasey is not Alberto Gonzales," referring to the former attorney general who resigned in September after months of questions about his honesty.

THERE GOES ANOTHER MILLION OR SO INDEPENDENT VOTES!

More illegal immigrant women taking housekeeper and nanny jobs

In the debate over immigration, they are virtually unheard, unseen: the hundreds of thousands of foreign-born women, many of them in the U.S. illegally, who toil in America's homes as nannies, cooks and housekeepers, changing diapers and scrubbing floors.

They are jobs of last resort for people whose other options are few.

The lucky ones earn decent wages, and build a promising future for their families.

The less fortunate, isolated and apprehensive, suffer a dismaying array of abuses - from exploitively low wages to sexual harassment. Some are forced to sleep in closets; others are threatened with deportation if they complain about overwork.

"These people can be very, very vulnerable, particularly if they're not documented," said Sam Dunning, who oversees social justice programs for the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. "If there's any dispute over working conditions, they have very little recourse."

It is, in Dunning's words, a job sector in the shadows - generally excluded from state and federal labor protections.

Experts and activists agree the ranks of household workers are swelling - likely to more than 1 million - although tallying their exact numbers and regulating their workplaces is near-impossible. Employers commonly seek off-the-books arrangements, avoiding contributions toward Social Security or Medicare, and many undocumented women prefer working in the underground economy to minimize chances of deportation.

In one particularly grim case, a wealthy couple went on trial this week on New York's Long Island, on federal charges related to the alleged abuse of two Indonesian women brought to the United States as housekeepers. Prosecutors say the women were held as virtual slaves, beaten, and paid no wages except for $100 a month sent to relatives abroad.

In a few cities, activists have begun campaigns to organize domestic workers and raise awareness of their difficulties, but traditional labor tactics - collective bargaining, the threat of striking - are not feasible.

Working conditions were harsh enough to drive Tomasa Compean away from a housekeeping job in Houston that she'd held for 18 years. Over that span her pay edged up from $30 to $50 a day, but her assigned cleaning duties kept increasing and she felt pressured to work even when sick.

"They treated me poorly," Compean said of the couple who employed her. "They were always asking me to do more and more."

Compean, 58, quit and took up full-time work as an office janitor. Last year, she helped lead a strike by 5,300 newly unionized Houston janitors, mostly immigrant women, who won better wages and working conditions.

"Now, if any problem comes up, I can deal with it," said Compean, who came from Mexico 27 years ago. "But it would be very hard to organize domestic workers. People who work in the private houses are scared to even talk."

Hiring household help is no longer reserved for the rich. Many middle-class families now feel they can afford to tap the vast pool of immigrants willing to work for modest wages, and many career women rely on a housekeeper to do chores for which they no longer have the time or energy....full article: http://www.fresnobee.com/state_wire/busi...

MySpace joins Google's social networking system

Internet social networking leader MySpace is joining Google Inc.'s platform for sharing applications across the Web - a concept that threatens to undermine the rapid growth of their common rival, Facebook Inc.

Google trumpeted the MySpace coup Thursday in a meeting with reporters, two days after revealing its plans to create a distribution network for interactive applications known as "widgets."

The programs - created by a hodgepodge of independent software developers and other Web sites - make it easier to share music, pictures, video and other personal interests on social networking sites. ...full article: http://www.fresnobee.com/state_wire/busi...

UN, Google, Cisco team to track poverty

The United Nations teamed with technology giants Google Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. to launch a new Web site Thursday that will provide data and a bird's eye view of global efforts to fight poverty and meet U.N. development goals by 2015.

The Millennium Development Goals, which world leaders approved at a U.N. summit in 2000, provide the latest statistics on health, education, malnutrition, women's equality and other measures that contribute to poverty.

On one portion of the new site, a Web surfer can also use Google Earth's map and satellite imagery to fly anywhere on the planet and "explore" the places where work is being done to achieve the goals. full article: http://www.fresnobee.com/560/story/18048...

Expert touts Valley, national economy in Fresno speech By Bethany Clough

FRESNO -- The Valley and the nation should be able to continue to prosper economically despite the housing downturn.

That was the message economist Stephen Moore shared with about 600 people at the Economic Development Corp. serving Fresno County's annual investors luncheon Wednesday.

Moore, who has advised Gov. Schwarzenegger on economic matters, is a member of the Wall Street Journal's editorial board and senior fellow at the Cato Institute, a public policy research foundation focusing on limited government, individual liberty, free markets and peace.

He said color televisions in bathrooms, cell phones, more air conditioning and other technologies are signs of that economic prosperity....full article: http://www.fresnobee.com/business/story/...

>Hey, Kenneth, when are some of the Florida bloggers going to come right out tell the truth?  When are you guys going to stop blaming Howard Dean and the DNC for what you did?

Since it's obvious you didn't read my response last time, I'll mention this again, floridagal, that neither I, nor most other Florida bloggers, are blaming Dean.

>I will posting more about what you guys are doing to John Russell soon.   Heck, I am not especially a big fan of his but I am alarmed at what the Florida Dems are doing.

The only person doing anything to Russell is Russell himself.  He needs to take a look at his approach to things and if he'd focus more on trying to accomplish something and stop breaking the law in an attempt to prevent others from accomplishing things, we'd all be better off.

As for your post on the truth, if you actually read the Florida blogs or listened to my blogtalkradio show, you'd know that I specifically talked about this.

Now that we've learned that Kucinich attracts the unscrupulous, I wonder when we'll learn which candidate attracts the petulant?

46 ~~ Oh, I'd say the same. Nothing much changes, eh? He was pulling this shit during the Iowa Caucuses last time around, eh? He can't win, so he just focuses on being a spoiler. Only difference is he's picked up a stunner of a wife.

The Average American, gets it.  Americans know that the economy doesn't work for them.  It works for the elites and the foreign interests. That's why there is a Ron Paul Revolution brewing in the country.

The best man running for President is Ron Paul.

George Washington isn't running, Jesus isn't running; Al Gore isn't running.

Join the Ron Paul Revolution and take back America!

The spoiler with his unscrupulous supporters, (some being DFA), will be bringing a privileged res. for Impeaching Cheney to the floor on Tues.
That is very commendable in my estimation.

Hope it makes the Kucinich people happy to have freeped this poll. And proved, yet once again, what unscrupulous peeps Kucinich attracts.

Thaht's not a fair or kind thing to say about so many good hearted liberals who support the only candidate whose record in office matches his rhetoric.

And didn't all of the top 4 do it? I know Draftgore did and expected that's why Edwards jumped to a large early lead.

Why in the 2004 Iowa caucases did Kucinich, who we all know is an anti-war candidate, make a deal with Edwards, who voted for the Iraq war, for his delegate votes?  Why didn't he support an anti-war candidate?  Today he saids he would bring the troops home immediately, IMHO if he had supported an anti-war candidate then perhaps the war would be over.

27. Huron John

I got an e-mail today, hyping Biden's put down of Rudy.
I think Rudy's reply is priceless:

"The only thing Biden has ever run is his mouth"
Rudy is a piece of crap, but that statement is right on!

=================

Priceless? John, Biden has a distinguished career of being a great leader in our party, through thick and thin, and your foul-mouthed bullshit cannnot undue that.

Go to hell, Judas.

Edwards looked like a winner that night. Dennis said he was looking for a delegate, like everyone else. It wouldn't have changed anything anyway. That's a caucus for you.

Please get this.

Ron Paul is a R-E-P-U-B-L-I-C-A-N. No Republican would ever consider themselves to be a progressive. Republicans call themselves conservatives. There is a VERY BIG difference.

http://www.democracyforamerica.com/about...

What is Democracy for America?

Inspired by the presidential campaign of Howard Dean, Democracy for America (DFA) is a political action committee dedicated to supporting fiscally responsible, socially progressive candidates at all levels of government—from school board to the presidency. DFA fights against the influence of the far right-wing and their radical, divisive policies and the selfish special interests that for too long have dominated our politics.

DFA has a long-term goal to rebuild the Democratic Party from the bottom up—it will take time, but we must start building a base now for the future.

Kenneth,  just saw your posts above.    We are not in Russell's district, but we did meet with both Penberthy and Russell, and we donated to both.

I do read many of the Florida blogs every day.   When the vote took place, it was like the emails and the blogs and the media all let loose at once.   It was stunning.   I and others were amazed that Nelson has so completely taken things over.   That lawsuit is a shocking thing, just as the one by the Tampa guy, Dimaio.   And Geller says he is working up a suit to sue the first four states?  Amazing.  Who is paying for all the suits to break the DNC's back?  Somebody has to pay for them.

My point about Russell is this.  Who in the world gave the party the power to decide who runs and who doesn't, whose personality is suitable and whose is annoying?   How can you keep out of fundraisers and a convention a guy who got 109,000 votes?

It is not about my supporting Russell, as much as my feeling like whoa...if the party leaders decide everything then why do they need us at all?  That is how my hubby and I have  felt.    We have close friends who are committeemen and women,  and we are not unaware of some of the inner workings.   I will never forget the time Navarro said it was the DFA people trying to take over the state party.   That was actually how many looked upon us.  It was not said favorably.

I posted at Daily Kos about the emails from county chairs saying to withhold donations from Dean and the DNC.  Quite frankly, I became angry.  I was practically called a liar.  Some of the ones in the threads were just being irritating, but some were known bloggers and party leaders.

Good Lord,  I was telling the truth and treated like an outsider for doing so.  I just did a search at the FLA Politics blog. There are two pages on Howard Dean, nothing taking up for him, not one thing.   I will do a search at the Progressive coalition blog next.

You have to remember....people like my hubby and I were Democrats, but we were not that active.  We voted, we donated, but that was it.  We were so excited in 2003, and we kept working.   Now, nothing.  Our friends and fellow DFAers have about given up in this area.   Will that change?  I don't know.   We can only fight the system just so much.
