Hillary in General Election Mode @ UNH campus 11-01-2007

During the debate earlier this week in Philadelphia, Hillary Clinton was justifiably ridiculed by John Edwards for saying she was moving into "General Election Mode" even though (as she herself points out in her speeches) no votes have been cast yet.  Her speech on a grey November afternoon in Durham, NH was, however, very much in General Election Mode.

For starters, during her UNH speech, she never even acknowledged that anyone else was running for the Democratic nomination.  (Although, in Philadelphia, there were half a dozen other candidates on stage with her, all of whom politely but firmly took issue with her stands on the issues.)  Strategically, this is understandable: she is very far ahead in the polls, and also in terms of locking up the endorsements of the party's apparatchiks.  The only way she can lose is if 1.) her campaign implodes and 2.) one or two candidates emerge from the pack as alternatives to Hillary.

She is clearly going to great pains not to implode: her presentation was carefully crafted not to say anything too controversial (and not to say anything about drivers licenses, of course.)  Unlike most of her competitors, who like to give brief presentations before going to Q&A, she answered no questions at all, not even on the "rope line" after the speech (although she did spend a good ten or fifteen minutes out there.)  Indeed, aside from the speech itself, the issues were avoided: there were for example, no stacks of issue papers available at the door, and no advocacy groups were encouraged to participate in the event.  Even though she laid out a number of strong policy positions, this event was about Hillary the presumptive nominee, not Hillary the policy advocate.  Her speech was designed to present a progressive agenda in a way which didn't directly confront the cliches of the right.  She came out in favor of universal health care and education and peace and all that good stuff, but she didn't say much about how she would actually accomplish those things.  Unfortunately for Hillary, the strongest voices amongst her competition are coming from the left... Edwards (whom I am leaning towards), Kucinich, and even Obama are all unabashed progressives.  They are all strongly rooted in Middle America, they are by no means Marxists (although I know Obama would have had to study Marx at Columbia during his Core Curriculum classes) but they are all unrepentant leftwingers.  (Also, the right wing noise machine is going label as a "Marxist" whoever the Democratic nominee turns to be... and in fact they are already calling Hillary a Marxist.)

The most interesting part of her speech was the section about "clean energy."  (This section even had a little controversy: she ignored nuclear power, but she did come in favor of wind power, which isn't controversial per se-- except when companies try to actually build wind turbines in a specific location.)  She claimed that green energy jobs would be jobs which "can't be outsourced."  I don't know about that: the actual machinery will probably be built in China, the work will be probably be done by H-1B visa holders from India and gastarbeiter from Mexico... and unless we restructure our economy pretty fast, Corporate America will try to get the work done without paying workers a living wage, without giving them health insurance, without properly training them, etc. During the education part of the speech, she spoke of how there was a skills shortage for (for example) auto and airplane mechanics.  Unfortunately, she still has the old paradigm of blue vs. white collar, with blue collars jobs being for those who don't want to go to college.  But one of the reasons our economy is in trouble is precisely because of that dichotomy.  She noted that vocational education programs are cut,  and she also noted that No Child Left behind is a bad idea partially because young people who might be learning auto mechanics and similar skills in school are now too busy being trained to take No Child Left Behind tests.  But she doesn't quite seem to fully grasp (as Edwards and some of her competitors DO grasp--- as does her husband, whose name she never mentioned in the speech) that we need to re-value work in our society.  And we definitely need to abandon the idea that actually making stuff and doing things is not important.

Anyway, I will definitely vote for her in the general election, should she get that far.  In the meantime, I find myself searching for the candidate who can push her away from the dead center and towards the progressive side of the mainstream.  So I guess, like Hillary, I am getting into General Election Mode prematurely.

Two side notes: the crowd was not that large, about 1000 people in UNH's indoor track facility, and it was not particularly vocal in its enthusiasm.  Secondly, although she hardly ever mentioned her husband Bill's name, she did speak several times in the first person possessive of "Our Administration." (She did at least avoid saying that she "served as First Lady," which sounds silly because technically First Lady... or "First Dude" to quote the "Bill Clinton for First Dude" buttons which some entrepreneur was selling outside the venue... is not a political office.)

The Deans, Al Gore, and Barbara Boxer are FIRST.

Hillary, Chuck Schumer, and Duanne Feinstein are LAST.

Let the record show I tried to tap y'all on the shoulders but the last thread was just too much for my own personal version of Ol' Creaky.

Here's an interesting one: in a blind poll based just on credentials, Gore way outpaced Clinton, Obama and Edwards with Democratic voters:

I guess Kucinich's bio was not offered, since we can plainly see on our pol that he is our savior. LOL

Also, this interesting op-ed from Tom Friedman, who I am no longer a fan of, but I still like this article:

27. Huron John

I got an e-mail today, hyping Biden's put down of Rudy.
I think Rudy's reply is priceless:

"The only thing Biden has ever run is his mouth"
Rudy is a piece of crap, but that statement is right on!

=================

Priceless? John, Biden has a distinguished career of being a great leader in our party, through thick and thin, and your foul-mouthed bullshit cannnot undue that.

Joe's not perfect, but I would call him a liberal and a progressive.

Go to hell, Judas. You and Rudy are like piss and crap.

I said I would post this later, and I am doing it.   I believe the Florida bloggers who call themselves progressive are big enough to rise above party leaders like the ones in this post.

I see these people praised all the time.  One of the party chairs is calling herself a progressive, and she is saying the party will pick who runs.  Period.  She is banning a candidate from events.    A Democrat who actually was a delegate.

Now I was not in Russell's district,  but we met him and liked him.   He is a passionate guy, a smart guy.  He really does love our state and our country.   109,000 people liked him and voted for him.  Now the party is banning him .

 http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/1619

Florida bloggers who call themselves progressive need to also speak up on the state party's lack of honesty.  The bloggers have gone along with blaming the DNC and Howard Dean for everything.    They know better.

"Florida Democrats are all for it"...March 2006. All for the early primary that far ahead.

Dennis has always been against the war. He organised 125 Dems to vote against the war res. in 2002. He's the only candidate to have voted against funding the war. What happens at Caucuses is a lot of political manuevering, which to me doesn't have much to do with issues. It seems to me to be a game, but I don't understand it much either. I didn't start out supporting Dennis, it happened by elimination. Of course, I would give anything if Howard were a candidate, and I probably would support Gore, but I don't think, anymore, that he will run.

Anyone who is anti-War won't want to vote for any warring Republicratic DLC, Democratic Leadership Council members like  DLC Hillary Clinton, DLC Barack Obama, DLC John Edwards, DLC Bill Richardson -- not sure but think Biden is DLC as well.  The only Democrats that are not Republicratic DLC are Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel.  The Republicans and the DLC are afraid of Mike Gravel or Mike Gravel would never have been shut out of the MSNBC Debate October 30, 2007.

DLC Members are Bush's Republicratic Republican Democrats in the Democratic Party.

List Supplied on Blog For America: http://blogforamerica.com/view/22541#comment-1127774  and at http://web.archive.org/web/20030327095711/www.ndol.org/new_dem_dir_action.cfm?viewAll=1 compiled with NNDB List http://www.nndb.com/group/269/000093987/  [ Live link no longer works, so copy and paste.]

DLC Republicrats do NOT represent the 70% Majority Population that they are suppose to represent as WE THE PEOPLE.  There are definitely more Republicratic DLC members than are on this list,  and this list is not fully updated as to positions, but until the DLC proudly gives out a current updated list, this is all we have. I thank Linda*in*SFNM for the majority of this list.

Mike Gravel is being blackballed by the DLC Republicrats and the Republican Media for telling the truth to the people, so Mike Gravel would be the best Democrat candidate for the 70% majority common people.  Do not get caught up in the Republicrat/Republican propaganda that will not allow Mike Gravel to speak, if they weren't afraid of him, they would let him speak.   Vote for Mike Gravel in the Primary Election.   Vote for Mike Gravel for president if Republicrat/Republican control allows Mike Gravel to be on the ballot.  The only other choice besides Democrat Mike Gravel is Democrat Dennis Kucinich, and both are anti-WAR and independent thinkers that would make great presidents for the greater majority population.  DO NOT BE DECEIVED.  NO DLC MEMBER IS ANTI-WAR.

US increases pressure on diplomats to serve in Iraq
· Prospect of first forced postings since Vietnam
· Only one-third of positions in Baghdad embassy filled

Ed Pilkington in New York
Saturday November 3, 2007

The Guardian ....This would be the first mass mobilisation of diplomats imposed upon employees against their will since 1969, when recruits entering the service were told they would not be given jobs unless they agreed to go to Vietnam as their first posting.

-----

Its interesting that we would boost diplomatic strength in 1969 considering that the Vietcong had been victorious in Jan, 1968 during TET.....in fact, the VC penetrated the US Embassy in Saigon.

I don't like to say it, but it seems these diplomats will be wasting their time with these compulsory assignments. IMHO, the country is beyond repair...too much corruption....a second guerrilla enemy, if you will. Then, you have the militias and no political reconciliation...no meeting of benchmarks.

And now, it appears, the north of the country is destabilized. It doesn't look good at all.

The DFA community needs to know that there IS a candidate who:

  • organized 125 Democratic Congressmen to vote against the 2002 resolution to authorize force in Iraq,
  • that there IS a Democratic presidential candidate who voted against the Patriot Act,
  • that there IS a Democratic presidential candidate who supports withdrawing from NAFTA and the WTO,
  • that there IS a Democratic Presidential candidate who has called for impeachment of the Vice President AND the President.
  • And more importantly, there IS a Democratic candidate who stands for a NOT FOR PROFIT health care system, Medicare for All.

Some folks obviously like to just post lies.

A few times to correct them, but if they continuously post it then you know it's intentional.

Tis a shame we have to have that here.

Martha, I realize you like to just keep posting this same stuff over and over. But if you care about the blog and still want to post lies, I realize you must feel this is the only way your candidate can get support, at least post your old links, especially for the folks who have dial up, OK?

From an interview today, audio at the link, about 20 minutes.

Dean supports rotating regional presidential primaries

"(Host) Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean says he'd like to see his party adopt a system of rotating regional presidential primaries beginning in 2012.

Dean says the approach would give most states an opportunity to have a greater influence on the selection of presidential nominees.

(Dean) "I think the thing to do is to move some of the other primaries back and then rotate them through so in the future every state can count on having some significant input into who the presidential nominee is."

Mr and Mrs Plame Wilson did great on Real Time. They're having a local event here next week.

I can't believe the CIA blacked out so much in her book.

Well, I'm off.

Remember, truth speaks louder.

Al Gore has a tremendous record of accomplishments and experience with a priority of doing good for the people and our world-from his years of public service and beyond in to private life, from when he volunteered to serve in Vietnam (even though he was against the war), becoming a reporter for the Tennessean for 5 years upon his return, serving in the US House, serving in the US Senate, serving as US Vice President and now spending his time in private life working tirelessly getting attention to recognize and solve the Climate Crisis. Al Gore is a proven leader with stature, vision and unmatchable experience and has been proven to be correct on some of the most important issues we still face, like the Iraq war, the deficit, health care, over-reaching powers, trampling of our Constitution, the environment and Global Warming. We deserve him to be our president. He is asking us to rebuild our democracy and for citizen activism to bring about the change we need. Please add your voice and show we know we deserve the best to be in the Oval Office to make the agenda and policy to solve the many crisis we face.

its almost funny that the pulse poll has polling at this hour. its really down to dennis and al. the others only get token votes. i wish gravel would get at least 1,000 and i even went to his site yesterday to egg them on. oh well.

seems bad tempers all around on the blog tonight???

my gig tonight went really well. we had a large crowd throughout and some even stayed for the whole 3 hours. imagine that. one guy even had his digital recorder on the while time. bootleg? i guess that's a positive, right? the dancers were way over the top. really cool. and our lighting/projectionist guy really outdid himself. imagine video of the dancers processed and shot back on the walls in 3 panels as they danced. great stuff.

i guess we'll be invited back again.

i volunteered to cut the video/audio for an approximate one hour dvd. i haven't done this before, but i think i can. we'll see. maybe i'll just do a dual side and use it all?

Why in the 2004 Iowa caucases did Kucinich, who we all know is an anti-war candidate, make a deal with Edwards, who voted for the Iraq war, for his delegate votes?  Why didn't he support an anti-war candidate?  Today he saids he would bring the troops home immediately, IMHO if he had supported an anti-war candidate then perhaps the war would be over.

That's my grudge against Kucinich. If he really wanted to end the disaster in Iraq he shouldn't have stabbed the only other candidate wanting to do it, and make a deal with one of the warmongers, just for a measley delegate -- the equivalent of trading a cow for magic beans.

Shumer is a wimp if he thinks that torture would make him reveal national security secrets.

On the other hand, he's unrealistic if he thinks that someone who's gone through a near death experience is still able to think clearly and provide information that's factually correct. The practitiioners may refer to their behavior as "simulate a drowning;" if the person needs to be revived, as has been described, then it's a near-death experience in which the brain synapses are very likely fried.

Anyway, I need to write up yesterday's events, which I attended as a member of the press on behalf of DFNH.  What that meant, in practice, was that I was given a little tag to hang around my neck and a press packet.  What was revealing about that was that both packets contained a "report" on the events, prepared by the organizers, which the "reporters" could them excerpt for their "stories."  You wouldn't even have to stay and actually pay attention to simulate that you were there.

I will not, obviously, cut and paste these prepared summaries of the day's events.  I'm only maundering here because I haven't yet decided whether to make this predigested stuff an issue.  I think not.

I'm very proud to see the turnout for Kucinich because i've worked hard as a volunteer for his campaign.  As many of you probably already know, Dennis is the first choice of more people than ALL other candidates combined.  I know that's hard for some people to believe because he's consistently portrayed as far-left and unelectable by the corporate mediacracy, but the proof is the independent candidate survey available at un-scared.*org (remove the star)

Do you remember the bad-old days when white candidates courted the white vote and so promoted divisivenes?  Well, now we have candidates focusing on the black and women's vote, and that also promotes divisiveness.  I admire these Senators, but they've simply turned their campaigns over to folks who believe the ends justify the means, and that strategy can't get there from here.  The truth is, changing America's course will require more than the bare majority win that the corporate candidates can deliver. The only candidate that has that kind of potential is the little guy from Cleveland, the one who's not slick at all, the one who's spent his life in true service.  When America wakes up to the truth that there is a candidate who represents their views, we'll return to the poll booths and deliver a rebirth of participatory democracy.  Al Gore can't give us that and he's said why himself: he'd have to sell his soul to the corporations to compete on this playing field.  Why?  Because he's a good guy, but he just doesn't walk the walk.  Dennis does and always has and that's why he leads here even though he has taken no money from corporations and big business.

Support the true peace candidate.  How many innocents must die?  How many soldiers must pay with their lives?

Amid immigration rhetoric, Dodd strives for nuance

By Globe Staff  |  November 3, 2007

Chris Dodd helped set off the biggest dust-up of this week's Democratic presidential debate by disagreeing with Hillary Clinton on whether New York state should issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

But, as the Connecticut senator explained to Globe editors yesterday, his position on immigration is far more nuanced than his 30-second answer in the debate might have suggested.

He said that while he opposes giving driver's licenses because they are a privilege, he has no problem providing healthcare and education to illegal immigrants, because they are more of a right.

What's not been widely noted is that making a person's citizenship or resident status a criterion for issuing a license to drive an automotive vehicle, subjects EVERYONE to providing evidence of their status.  In other words, it's another step towards a national identification system.  What the bureaucrats haven't been able to accomplish directly, they're now trying to achieve on the back of an increasing phobia of illegals.

Never mind that "illegal immigrant" is an oxymoron.  "immigrant" is ipso fact a legal designation.  it's not possible to have an illegal legal.

The fact of the matter is that the constitution defines the limits and obligations of the agents of government regarding PERSONS.  Whoever happens to be here, regardless of how long or any ditinguishing individual characteristics is entitled to equal treatment.

I don't, btw, agree with the apparent designation of a license to drive as a privilege.  If Justice Kennedy is to be believed, then a permit or license to drive a vehicle must be issued, if the appropriate conditions, having to do with the ability to drive safely, have been met.   Efforts to use a license to drive as a backdoor way to impose a national identification system should be opposed.

Linda*in*SFNM 25:

Thank you for reporting that there are many more DLC members that are not on this list, I do know that.  Would you be so kind as to let us know who the other members are?   When someone  actually does something it becomes fact and the fact is truth.  Lies are when someone does not actually do something.  All members on the combined list at Post 15 have factually joined the DLC and were placed on the DLC's lists.  The DLC is an organization subjunct to Congress that is working against the greater population of the United States, the 70% majority common population and it will behoove the general population to not let a DLC candidate get into office.

DENNIS KUCINICH AND MIKE GRAVEL ARE THE ONLY DEMOCRATS WHO ARE NOT MEMBERS OF THE DLC.

I fear the spoiler is Richardson, I am not sure after the debate that he isn't on the Clinton team and playing Wes Clark's role of the last campaign.(splitting the field)

But I don't mind advocates of Out Now or single payer playing a role in the debates and campaigns and if they actually win the delegates on Feb 5th more power to them.

But as to what is being said about Gore, if he is pulled into the race by a groundswell, it is participatory democracy at it's best.
