For more than three hours Monday night, Rep. Brian Baird was verbally flogged by hundreds of his constituents for no longer supporting the quick withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

More than 500 people packed a high school auditorium in Vancouver while another 175 or so were unable to get inside. And virtually everyone who got a chance to address the Vancouver Democrat were harshly critical - including several who said they had been long-time supporters and friends.

"You have just broken my heart," said Phil Massey, a Vancouver ship's pilot who wasn't swayed by Baird's explanation that the U.S. was finally starting to make some progress in bringing peace to Iraq. "You have screwed up, my friend. You have screwed up and you have to change course."

That was two hours into the meeting and the crowd was still loaded for bear as the room broke into loud applause. At several points in the evening, Baird simply leaned against the stage with his arms folded, his head down as he let the crowd vent. But he also vigorously disputed several points made by the speakers and defended his independence from the Bush administration. He insisted that he is taking the courageous path.

"The easiest thing in the world would have been to go over there...and just say, using partisan rhetoric, 'Get out now,'" he said.

This was the first of two town halls Baird is holding in the wake of his about-face on Iraq earlier this month after returning from a trip to the Mideast. His new support for the surge has attracted national headlines and been prominently cited by Republican House leaders as a sign that the U.S. troop surge was starting to pay dividends. Baird, who voted in 2002 against giving President Bush authority to go to war, will also meet constituents at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cowlitz County Expo Center in Longview.

Hey there....what the heck do you guys think about a Democratic Party county chairperson in Florida actually hinting in an email that people should call the donation line for the DNC....and I guarantee you she did not mean to donate.   This is getting very ugly here .

Bill Richardson has a credible plan to get all of the American troops out of Iraq. I guarantee he will be viable in the Iowa caucuses. who does his support come from? Biden? Obama?

Obviously, getting ALL THE TROOPS OUT under the bush administration and his modus operandi would light years better than ALL THE TROOPS IN.

But such an absolutist disposition, while feeling warm and fuzzy to the core, may be far from the best liberal position should the policy and landscape change, with a viable political solution, from either a new policy by Congressional override, or from another President.

If a Bosnian-type implementation were possible,  and did succeed, it would require a number of U.S. troops close to 40-50,000 troops, as part of a peace-keeping force, such as we still have 20,000 in Bosnia, none of which have been killed since the plan was implemented.

The  consideration of possible residual troops remaining for such a purpose, if publicly expressed, takes much wind out of the sails of  Republican  moderates' and moderate-rights' opposition to something like B-G or the forthcoming Biden-Boxer-Brownback legislation, which would bring an end to the genocidal war and gradually have Iraqi refugees return from Syria and elsewhere.

Leaving Iraq, per se, is not as important as healing the wounds and damage as we leave.  This would definitely have the broadest conscenus of the country of both parties and would ensure a victory in 2008

No need to comment here because according to some you have to regester as a Dem. to be part of DFA.  Bernie Sanders would not be allowed to comment here, and I guess It used to be ok for Leiberman to make comments here before he became an Independent.    I regret reading the earlier thread comment and the ignorance of some views of Democracy, and DFA.     Good luck swaying the Indys to vote. No wonder no candidates commented from Iowa on the blog.  I love to not comment !

I wonder if the DSCC and the DCCC will be as honest and as courageous as our members have been in discussing the Florida primary matter. Doubt it !

Regarding rules and changes. why do Dem. candidates accept money from corporations? Maybe the Dems could change, or make that rule for them.   Otherwise....

I enjoy town halls with Bill Richardson, he has an engaging personality, plus the best plan for getting us out of Iraq. he gets his staff involved too.

BTW chuck, Senator Dodd did join us on the blog, if but briefly, and his staff made us a taylored video at my request and they delivered

since blogging here my Congressman has been an occasional lurker as he was an A List finalist last fall and is a DFA fan

That is in direct violation of the rules in my state. If I did that, I could be removed from my position or lose my voting privilege. The rules may be different elsewhere.

Choices, always come with consequences. The consequences of her choices are something that the Florida State Chair needed think before the vote. Rules are rules and in a civil democratic society it's important that they are respected.

In politics you win some and you lose some.

They lost on the ruling, period.

But the Republican rules are even more stringent, and the national party said today that it would not hesitate enforcing them.

The actions by Republicans and Democrats to move against states holding early contests is a rare instance of the two parties moving in concert, in this case to regain control over a rapidly evolving primary calendar that has thrust the nominating system into deep uncertainty just months before it is to begin.

Yeah, DFA 1.0 chose to bail out on the campaign fianance and it cost us matching funds (when we could have used them to go to all those states Howard rattled off in 'the scream').

I've been hangin' with this outfit ever since that disaster, so if anyone knows consequences it's me.

The consequence of that is hundreds of billion of dollars and thousands if not hundreds of thousands of lives.

How does that compare to an 8 days difference??

Not all, i went all about here and advocated against. I had every right to do that. I understood the implications. I was right. The loss of Howard's campaign due to not having the funds to continue had the effects, possibly, i sighted above.

It's on everyone else's conscience about that, not mine. I've fought ever since to recover something... anything.

The loss of Florida in the Presidential general will have the same implications.

... and i'm making the call now, just as then.

I care a lot. I see beyond their protestations, the kickoff of the war (and it will be I'm afraid) to unseat Howard so the Clinton machine will have total access to the money at DNC. I'm sure Hillary couldn't care less if 50 states participate. If Hillary were to be elected, it would be very difficult to hold on to any gains in reforming or taking back our Party. Howard and all of us have worked too hard for the last three or four years to get steamrolled by the Clintons again. Thanks for spreading the word.

Floridians can use their primary like a straw poll if they like as I read the offer from Dean, it just can't count for the official allocation of delegates which must use a process within the rules. Every other state follows those rules. What is the big deal about following party rules? We don't set our delegates in the caucuses either. just allocate % you can win the electoral vote without, just brings other states into play which should be in play anyway

Did anyone else do the vigil tonight? I took my candle and my sign that said OUT NOW to the next little town 8 miles down the road where it was indicated there was a vigil. Sure enuf there were about 10 lol's in pink with signs -- apparently they go there every Monday from 5 to 6. I asked if they were Code Pink and they just said they are in support of Code Pink. This area is about as RED as you can get so it is brave to stand on a street corner here. On the other hand the people are very Southern and not likely to do anything mean or say much to a bunch of grannies so in that sense we got away with something. I had a good time. It felt good to do a little something. I wore my Dean for America shirt. It was hot as h*ll.

I will stand behind Dean, altho we have to change this antiquated system.  Is is too late to have one day for primaries in all 50 states?  IRV?  I really don't like the 15% rule.
