Jim Dean Responds to Rep. Jay Inslee's Impeachment Resolution Against Gonzales
BURLINGTON, VT – Yesterday, Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) introduced a resolution calling on the Judiciary Committee to consider impeachment proceedings against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America (DFA), issued the following statement in response to the introduction of this impeachment resolution:
"One thing is clear. Alberto Gonzales is no longer fit to serve as the Attorney General of the United States. If President Bush won't fire him, then Congress must exercise its constitutional authority and impeach the Attorney General. Democracy for America supports today's resolution calling for the Judiciary Committee to investigate impeachment of the Attorney General. Only after Gonzales is gone can integrity be restored to the Justice Department."
Democracy for America has been conducting a nationwide Impeach Gonzales campaign for the past 4 months. Our local groups delivered a petition signed by over 80,000 concerned Democracy for America members to the office of Rep. John Conyers, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee and several other pertinent committee members earlier this summer. This petition was a culmination of our Impeach Gonzales campaign including a two minute video Impeach Gonzales II: The Crimes and a series of prominent ads which ran in The Hill, the New York Observer, Detroit Metro Times and the Los Angeles Daily News. Insley IS mine! Or close to me anyway. McDermott is actually mine, but Insley's office is about 4 miles from my house and he attends our LD meetings regularly. McDermott signed on to Kuchinichs' for impeaching Darth Cheney, so I'm fairly confident that he will sign on to this one as well.

So when do impeachment proceedings against Cheney begin?
Obama has many young people supporting him. What do they know or remember about nukes and the devastation they cause? Do they have a clue about Pakistan? I doubt it. It's style over substance and the Obama campaign knows this is how to capture the naive youth vote; hence the offensive, IMO, Obama girls, who,IMO, are being exploited sexually. Frankly I find him and his campaign manipulative, deceptive, sexually exploitive. Between his views on the *war on terror,* Pakistan and AIPAC, I find him downright scary. And he's bright enuf to fool enuf people to get elected.
In the Kos poll, Clinton is leading with Obama in second.
Is the fix in?
Well I do, and I won't stop putting pressure on this administration until I know they have a plan to bring our troops home safely.
But it's not just that Cheney doesn't think Congress should have oversight -- he thinks those of us who do are "reinforcing enemy propaganda."
It is time to find out exactly where the Bush administration stands on this issue. I'm going to send a letter to President Bush, and I want your name to be on it. Join me in calling on him to plan for the safe withdrawal of our troops.
Here's the whole story. Back in May, concerned about the administration's failure to plan in Iraq, I sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates asking him to provide Congress with briefings of contingency plans for withdrawal -- or an explanation of why no such plans exist.
Two weeks ago, Under Secretary of Defense Eric Edelman responded in a letter that said discussing plans for withdrawal "reinforces enemy propaganda." It was an outrageous response -- and a dangerous one. Planning for withdrawal isn't just common sense. It is vital to ensuring our troops return home safe.
Secretary Gates quickly disavowed Edelman's letter, saying he encouraged Congressional oversight and promising to respond to my original inquiry.
But in an interview with Larry King that aired last night on CNN, Vice President Cheney said he agreed with Edelman's assertion that Congress asking the Pentagon to plan for our troops' safe return "reinforces enemy propaganda."
So which is it, President Bush? Do you support the safe return of troops from Iraq, or are you going to continue to play politics with their lives?

The final ethics bill, which has already passed the House, includes a strong lobbyist gift ban, tough new restrictions on privately funded travel and corporate jet flights, much needed additional disclosure of lobbying activities, unprecedented new disclosure of all of the ways that lobbyists provide financial support to members of Congress, including bundling campaign contributions, a provision to slow the revolving door between the halls of Congress and the lobbying world, and earmark reform.
This is an issue that I've worked on since first coming to the Senate in 1992. And while I wish the final bill would have been even stronger, this legislation represents a dramatic change in the way business is done in Washington, D.C.
Now there is much more work to do. Congress still isn't moving as fast as either you or I would like on a number of issues - specifically on safely redeploying our brave men and women in uniform out of Iraq. But passing this strong ethics reform package is a giant step toward getting our country back on track.

Another pawn will somehow be put in place or perhaps there will be an *event* here at home...or how about a recess appointment after Gonzo decides he needs to spend more time with his family? Remember, they are running out the clock and doing it masterfully.
To restore integrity, we have to get rid of Cheney. Period. IMHO
Last week, the minimum wage rose for the first time in ten years, a real victory for the millions of Americans who struggle to make ends meet.
We have also produced other common-sense legislation that is popular across the political spectrum. Yet, despite the support of a clear majority of the American people, President Bush continues to oppose public sentiment and has even promised to veto these bills.
It's the same approach we have seen time and time again with this President, especially regarding his refusal to change course in Iraq.
I want you to rest assured that Democrats are listening to the American people, and we remain firm in our commitment to bring our troops home as soon and as safely as possible.

The U.S. doesn't currently give much aid at all to Sierra Leone or any other African country (excluding Egypt). Great Britian, which has troops fighting in Afghanistan against al Qaeda and the Taliban, is the main supplier of aid to Sierra Leone.
The people of Sierra Leone have not forgotten what Britian did to help weed out terrorism in Sierra Leone (the terrorism of the RUF that hacked off civilians hands and feet) in 2000, by Tony Blair ordering in British commandos into the heart of the capital of Freetown, where the rebels had conquered half of the city.
Seven years later, next week on 8/8/07, Sierra Leoneons, including many expatriates, will be voting in long lines for a president and a parliament. My wife and I will be visiting there next Oct.
As for Obama, he's already indicated that he's interested in giving more aid and attention to his ancestorial homeland continent of Africa.
Finally, IMO we'll have a president who can walk and chew gum the same time (not choke on pretzels or pork rinds).
I already said that if Gore decides to enter the race for U.S. President, I will seriosuly have to make a decision if my support for Obama for president still stands as strongly as it does now.
But since Gore has not announced, for now I'm not on the fence and obviously haven't been since this past Jan when Obama announced.
(FYI - I don't want a repub, the likes of a Romney, as our next President, and will do whatever I can to ensure that. I've already seen what he can do as my governor and IMO it was not a pretty sight.)

I guess, that terrorism speech earlier today he gave must have really hurt him.
I hop on my bike this Saturday. This race raises money for cancer research and treatment. We've made great strides in those areas; I'm living proof of that -- but those we all know and love who weren't so lucky remind us we have more miles to go than there are miles in this race.
So, please, go here and support my ride with a pledge of support. Help raise money for this important cause.
The money raised will go to the Jimmy Fund. Anyone who grows up in New England knows all about the Jimmy Fund. As a New Englander, I still remember those photos in the newspaper and those ads between innings -- the images of our heroes Ted Williams and Yaz asking each of us to pitch in to help children struggling to beat cancer. There's a reason The Jimmy Fund sign is there on The Green Monster in Fenway Park, a fact which will be brought home to all of us in Red Sox Nation when Jon Lester pitches from the Fenway mound for the first time very soon on his own courageous comeback journey. This is an outstanding charity that has done decades of important work, and last year this race represented a full 50% of the income of the Jimmy Fund. So this is a very important event for a cornerstone organization in our fight against cancer.

Passage Follows U.N. Security Council Decision to Authorize Peacekeeping Troops in Darfur
Washington, DC – Last night, just hours after the U.N. Security Council announced its decision to authorize the deployment of peacekeeping troops to Darfur, the Senate passed a bipartisan resolution (S. Res. 276) sponsored by Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-DE) and Ranking Member Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) which calls for the immediate deployment of a peacekeeping mission to Darfur and lays out benchmarks for that mission
