FOX Attacks! The Environment

Written by: Sheri Divers on Jul 11, 2007 9:00 AM EDT

It's FOX Attacks time... again.

In March we all took on Fox and we beat them. Bad. The Nevada Fox-sponsored presidential debates were canceled when our videos showing Fox's distortions were spread far and wide. Local bloggers worked like crazy, activists around the country wrote and called, and MoveOn used their strategic strength and smarts to bring it all home.

Now Fox is at it again. The only surprise this time is the amount of time and energy they are putting into denying that the sun sets in the west. Okay, well not exactly, but pretty close. They are fighting the scientific truth of the climate crisis and are claiming it just isn't so! I'm not kidding. Take a look at the video evidence, you won't believe what you see. (Well, maybe you will)

Seen enough? Now it's time to get to work. Join with us, the Sierra Club, and MoveOn to put an end to this propaganda and distortion by appealing to Fox's advertisers. Specifically, Home Depot. Why? Because Home Depot says they care about the environment. So we're giving them a chance to prove it by asking them to stop advertising on Fox until it changes its lies and distortions about the climate crisis.

Tell Home Depot to stop advertising on Fox! http://action.sierraclub.org/foxattacks

No responsible company claiming to support the environment should be advertising with a corporation that consistently deceives America about the climate crisis. Rupert Murdoch says he wants to "get their house in order." Let's help him along by applying pressure to his bank accounts.

Thank you for joining us in this next FOX ATTACKS battle,

Robert Greenwald, DJK, and the Brave New Films team

It looks like I'll have to spell it out to you.

You persistently elevate Edwards to Presidential material (which I agree his is) as do others, especially in the MSM, elevate H Clinton (ditto, IMO, presidential).

Well I find it interesting how both the Edwards and Clinton camps paint Obama as not being ready for primetime -- that the best that the Edwards and Clinton camps can say of Obama is that he is though ready for sub-primetime (ie. vice-president). Well, IMO he's ready for primetime just as much as the other two.

So to rephrase my statement:

IMO, Hoke (Colburn, ie. Obama) won't be driving Miss Daisy (Werthan, ie. H Clinton) or anyone else (ie. Edwards, etc.).

Levin is still gaming the system on Iraq--proposing legislation that probably won't pass and will be vetoed if it does.

So he and other Democrats can say "We tried, but don't have the votes to overide".

What a cynical bunch of hypocrites!

Woman who had sex change declines Obama invite

Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Four supporters of Barack Obama were getting a rare chance to dine with the Democratic presidential candidate Tuesday night, with one change to the guest list.

Florida firefighter Jennifer Lasko, chosen from among thousands of small-dollar donors, declined her invitation after local media reported that she used to be a man named John.

Aides to the Illinois senator said they weren't aware of Lasko's sex change before inviting her, but they encouraged her to attend after the news reports surfaced. Lasko decided that she did not want the attention that the dinner would attract.

"We would have loved to have her at the dinner with Senator Obama and the other guests," said Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki. "We hope they have the opportunity to meet at another time."

The campaign invited Christina Cheatham, a rising senior at Georgia College and State University, to take Lasko's place. Cheatham entered the dinner contest with a $5 donation and was rewarded with an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, including a site-seeing tour and dinner at a steak restaurant.

Doesn't it give one pause that the Homeland Security Director is telling us he has "a feeling" that we might get attacked this year?

I do hope those those feelings didn't eminate from the VP's office or the many reports that may be coming to them, as in years past, that they are trying to ignore.

The Live Earth Concerts were a huge success. Sold out crowds at the venues, but billions more tuned in around the world, all receiving one message. Any trying to sway it's accomplishments by focusing on the carbon footprint by some of the entertainers to be able to perform, are missing the point. Or maybe not.

Keep the momentum going and growing.
Sign the Pledge:

1.To demand that my country join an international treaty within the next 2 years that cuts global warming pollution by 90% in developed countries and by more than half worldwide in time for the next generation to inherit a healthy earth;

2.To take personal action to help solve the climate crisis by reducing my own CO2 pollution as much as I can and offsetting the rest to become "carbon neutral;"

3.To fight for a moratorium on the construction of any new generating facility that burns coal without the capacity to safely trap and store the CO2;

4.To work for a dramatic increase in the energy efficiency of my home, workplace, school, place of worship, and means of transportation;

5.To fight for laws and policies that expand the use of renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on oil and coal;

6.To plant new trees and to join with others in preserving and protecting forests; and,

7.To buy from businesses and support leaders who share my commitment to solving the climate crisis and building a sustainable, just, and prosperous world for the 21st century.

Al Gore rocks the world, but will he save the planet?

Oliver Burkeman
Monday July 9, 2007
The Guardian

Among a number of things that did not happen yesterday in the wake of Live Earth, the world's carbon dioxide emissions did not plummet to zero, and international air travel did not immediately cease. Rock stars did not rise as one to trade their private jets for bicycles.

And yet - as the shock that the planet had not been saved in a day began to fade - the scandalous possibility presented itself that Al Gore's seven-continent, 24-hour concert series had been really rather impressive, and might yet prove to have been hugely important.

[snip]

Still, it would have taken steely cynicism not to acknowledge something in the air at Wembley, however intangible. It was not a politically angry event, and perhaps it should have been - but the call to personal action was unmissable. "In Africa there's a proverb that says 'if you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,'" Mr Gore said, live from Washington. "We have to go far, quickly."

Yet another reason that Obama is not qualified to be president:

An invasion of Iran is imminent, because that is the only solution the Bush gang and the corporate mafia it serves can conjure to rally the American people behind their quest for global dominance. The Democratic Party is one with the Republicans in the mission to subjugate Tehran. Although the Iraq war failed to establish a New American Century, the century ain't over, and the imperial ambition remains. Barack Obama stands in the wings with a proposal to add 100,000 new troops to the military - reinforcements for a depleted and overspent machine that has been ground to a halt by Iraqi nationalists. When the ruling class demands unity of the people, they call for war. The next one will be against Ayatollahs whose names none of us can even pronounce.

Having just purchased carbon offsets to cover this year's car and home, I can understand if others can't take this step, it's not cheap.

But you can get a smart thermostat that lets you shut (or cut back) the AC or heat when you're out of the house.  They're not expensive, and so easy even I can install them.  I'm replacing incandescents with compact fourescents as the bulbs die (no need to throw away perfectly good bulbs) where practical.  Small steps, but if we all take small steps a lot can be accomplished.

WASHINGTON - The number of refugees worldwide increased by nearly 2 million last year, driving the total to nearly 14 million, the highest level since 2001, the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants reported Wednesday.

The rise was due in part to a continued exodus from Iraq, where 790,000 people left last year. Syria took in 449,000 and Jordan 250,000, the private refugees committee said.

Some 80,000 went to Egypt, while the United States accepted 202 Iraqi refugees for resettlement.

Rich, COOL. Congrats and thank YOU. While I am in this temporary housing, I still tried to do what ever I can. I too think, where ever the florescents fit, less power to them :)

I told my neighbors even though they look different, they (florescent)work terrificly in the bathroom fixtures and I felt a HUGE difference on the heat a lone that they threw off (or didn't).

So many simple steps we can make, that benefit ourselves and the environment.

Putting a blanket on my water heater (in the GARAGE) saved a lot of wasted energy. You can feel the difference when to touch, it was cool, once the blanket is on and you reach inside, it is warm.

I'm looking forward to starting my own rain collection, too.

Data on Americans Mined for Terror Risk

Jul 10, 11:25 PM (ET)

By LARA JAKES JORDAN

WASHINGTON (AP) - The FBI is gathering and sorting information about Americans to help search for potential terrorists, insurance cheats and crooked pharmacists, according to a government report obtained Tuesday.

Records about identity thefts, real estate transactions, motor vehicle accidents and complaints about Internet drug companies are being searched for common threads to aid law enforcement officials, the Justice Department said in a report to Congress on the agency's data-mining practices.

In addition, the report disclosed government plans to build a new database to assess the risk posed by people identified as potential or suspected terrorists.

the good news is that the system to protect from terrrorisssts is the last to come on line. What idiots voted to re-authorize this crap. Wasn't it VERY obvious the incompetance of this Admin by then??? sheeez mabye Howard needs to resign in pritest over the stupidity of his own party members - and COME HOME HOWARD!!

(cont. from above)

All but one of the databases - the one to track terrorists - have been up and running for several years, the report showed. The lone exception is the System to Assess Risk, or STAR, program to rate the threat posed by people already identified as suspected terrorists or named on terror watch lists.

The system, still under construction, is designed to help counterterror investigators save time by narrowing the field of people who pose the greatest potential threat and will not label anyone a terrorist, Boyd said.

But it could be based, in part at least, on commercial or public information that might not be accurate - potentially ranking an innocent person as a terror threat. Watch lists, for example, have mistakenly identified people as suspects based on their similar names or birthdates to terrorists.

(.... etc)

It’s true that some people with agendas are dismissive of the role of the President as Commander in Chief, and so you will see these casual charges by Glenn Ford, to which John gives an audience here, that Obama will add 100,000 troops to the country’s armed forces. Unadorned by any sort of context, the charges can be alarming. However, the context for such statements is of considerable importance. Make you own decisions but at a minimum, don’t take the charges at face value the way John encourages you to do, without reading the full statement. This particular proposal is from Obama’s extensive remarks to the Chicago Council on Global Affairs last April. The following is a very small excerpt:

"In a speech five months ago, I argued that there can be no military solution to what has become a political conflict between Sunni and Shi’a factions. And I laid out a plan that I still believe offers the best chance of pressuring these warring factions toward a political settlement – a phased withdrawal of American forces with the goal of removing all combat brigades from Iraq by March 31st, 2008.

"I acknowledged at the time that there are risks involved in such an approach. That is why my plan provides for an over-the-horizon force that could prevent chaos in the wider region, and allows for a limited number of troops to remain in Iraq to fight al Qaeda and other terrorists.

"But my plan also makes clear that continued U.S. commitment to Iraq depends on the Iraqi government meeting a series of well-defined benchmarks necessary to reach a political settlement. Thus far, the Iraqi government has made very little progress in meeting any of the benchmarks, in part because the President has refused time and again to tell the Iraqi government that we will not be there forever. The President’s escalation of U.S. forces may bring a temporary reduction in the violence in Baghdad, at the price of increased U.S. casualties – though the experience so far is not encouraging. But it cannot change the political dynamic in Iraq. A phased withdrawal can.

"Moreover, until we change our approach in Iraq, it will be increasingly difficult to refocus our efforts on the challenges in the wider region – on the conflict in the Middle East, where Hamas and Hezbollah feel emboldened and Israel’s prospects for a secure peace seem uncertain; on Iran, which has been strengthened by the war in Iraq; and on Afghanistan, where more American forces are needed to battle al Qaeda, track down Osama bin Laden, and stop that country from backsliding toward instability.

"Burdened by Iraq, our lackluster diplomatic efforts leave a huge void. Our interests are best served when people and governments from Jerusalem and Amman to Damascus and Tehran understand that America will stand with our friends, work hard to build a peaceful Middle East, and refuse to cede the future of the region to those who seek perpetual conflict and instability. Such effective diplomacy cannot be done on the cheap, nor can it be warped by an ongoing occupation of Iraq. Instead, it will require patient, sustained effort, and the personal commitment of the President of the United States. That is a commitment I intend to make.

"The second way America will lead again is by building the first truly 21st century military and showing wisdom in how we deploy it.
"We must maintain the strongest, best-equipped military in the world in order to defeat and deter conventional threats. But while sustaining our technological edge will always be central to our national security, the ability to put boots on the ground will be critical in eliminating the shadowy terrorist networks we now face. This is why our country’s greatest military asset is the men and women who wear the uniform of the United States.

"This administration’s first Secretary of Defense proudly acknowledged that he had inherited the greatest fighting force in the nation’s history. Six years later, he handed over a force that has been stretched to the breaking point, understaffed, and struggling to repair its equipment.

"Two-thirds of the Army is now rated ‘not ready’ for combat. 88% of the National Guard is not ready to deploy overseas, and many units cannot respond to a domestic emergency.

"Our men and women in uniform are performing heroically around the world in some of the most difficult conditions imaginable. But the war in Afghanistan and the ill-advised invasion of Iraq have clearly demonstrated the consequences of underestimating the number of troops required to fight two wars and defend our homeland. That’s why I strongly support the expansion of our ground forces by adding 65,000 soldiers to the Army and 27,000 Marines.

"But adding troops isn’t just about meeting a quota. It’s about recruiting the best and brightest to service, and it’s about keeping them in service by providing them with the first-rate equipment, armor, training, and incentives they deserve. It’s about providing funding to enable the National Guard to achieve an adequate state of readiness again. And it’s about honoring our veterans by giving them the respect and dignity they deserve and the care and benefits they have earned.

". . . .

"We must take these steps with the knowledge that while sometimes necessary, force is the costliest weapon in the arsenal of American power in terms of lives and treasure. And it’s far from the only measure of our strength.

"In order to advance our national security and our common security, we must call on the full arsenal of American power and ingenuity. To constrain rogue nations, we must use effective diplomacy and muscular alliances. To penetrate terrorist networks, we need a nimble intelligence community – with strong leadership that forces agencies to share information, and invests in the tools, technologies and human intelligence that can get the job done. To maintain our influence in the world economy, we need to get our fiscal house in order. And to weaken the hand of hostile dictators, we must free ourselves from our oil addiction. None of these expressions of power can supplant the need for a strong military. Instead, they complement our military, and help ensure that the use of force is not our sole available option."

Ford: Hydrogen Cars Close to Production

TOM KRISHER | July 10, 2007 07:33 PM EST |
DEARBORN, Mich. — The relatively quick-and-easy answer to foreign oil dependence and automotive greenhouse gas emissions is circling the grounds every day at Orlando International Airport in Florida, according to a top Ford Motor Co. official. It's a utilitarian 12-passenger parking lot shuttle bus powered by a 6.8-liter internal combustion hydrogen engine, which Ford officials said is their hydrogen technology that's closest to mass production.

So will hydrogen cars blow up like bombs? Someone explain pros/cons to me.

"I'll tell you the point where I really turned," said Spc. Michael Harmon, 24, a medic from Brooklyn. He served a thirteen-month tour beginning in April 2003 with the 167th Armor Regiment, Fourth Infantry Division, in Al-Rashidiya, a small town near Baghdad. "I go out to the scene and [there was] this little, you know, pudgy little 2-year-old child with the cute little pudgy legs, and I look and she has a bullet through her leg.... An IED [improvised explosive device] went off, the gun-happy soldiers just started shooting anywhere and the baby got hit. And this baby looked at me, wasn't crying, wasn't anything, it just looked at me like--I know she couldn't speak. It might sound crazy, but she was like asking me why. You know, Why do I have a bullet in my leg?... I was just like, This is--this is it. This is ridiculous."

Sounds very patriotic...., I would say too patriotic.
Anyways Obama's is a "yesterday's" agenda...., of the days where PNAC (and alike policy) were wholeheartedly and widely adopted by America. The consequences of such an adoption we can see now in Iraq.

Obama IS FAILING for whatever smart/election_caused/strategic/political/etc. reasons to adopt progressive agenda which is targeting TOMORROW not YESTERDAY and which HAS NOTHING TO DO with MILITARY power!

Young, promising Senator seems too "professional" to be able to look into tomorrow. He should learn, imo, from "old" professionals like Paul and Gravel!

Did you watch the video? The Congress gave the President authority in October 2002, few thought he would use that authority to disregard...
---------

That's correct: "few" and Biden is NOT among them.
Enough said.
(Let "professionals" who were NOT among those "few" to retire from American politics....forever..., lol).

===================

So are you going to plit the party on the basis of a 2002 vote and disregard everything the Senator has said and done since then?

That is the kind of hubris that snatches defeat from the jaws of victory for Democrats.  I suggest you stop getting your jollies from cheap shot diggs and listen to what he had to say.  It was a great speech.  You denigrate a vote on a resolution four years ago, but won't  see what good is being done today?

It's called "hold themselves accountable."

=================

Then you have to hold the whole country accountable, because many in Congress were doing the will of the constituents.

Heres what the 2002 Iraqi resolution said and there is nothing in it about the detour the President made from it.

The resolution cited many factors to justify the use of military force against Iraq:

  • Iraq's noncompliance with the conditions of the 1991 cease fire, including interference with weapons inspectors.
  • Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction, and programs to develop such weapons, posed a "threat to the national security of the United States and international peace and security in the Persian Gulf region."
  • Iraq's "brutal repression of its civilian population."
  • Iraq's "capability and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction against other nations and its own people"
  • Iraq's hostility towards the United States as demonstrated by the 1993 assassination attempt of former President George H. W. Bush, and firing on coalition aircraft enforcing the no-fly zones following the 1991 Gulf War. -
  • Members of al-Qaeda were "known to be in Iraq."
  • Iraq's "continu[ing] to aid and harbor other international terrorist organizations," including anti-United States terrorist organizations.
  • The efforts by the Congress and the President to fight the 9/11 terrorists and those who aided or harbored them.
  • The authorization by the Constitution and the Congress for the President to fight anti-United States terrorism
  • Citing the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, the resolution reiterated that it should be the policy of the United States to remove the Saddam Hussein regime and promote a democratic replacement.

The Resolution required President Bush's diplomatic efforts at the UN Security Council to "obtain prompt and decisive action by the Security Council to ensure that Iraq abandons its strategy of delay, evasion, and noncompliance and promptly and strictly complies with all relevant Security Council resolutions." It authorized the United States to use military force to "defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq; and enforce all relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions regarding Iraq." UN members commented it is not up to one member state to interpret and enforce UN resolutions. Subsequently Kofi Anan remarked that these arguments do not constitute the legal requirements set forth in the laws of war prohibiting wars of aggression

ETHICS -- INTERIOR DEPARTMENT OVERSIGHT CHIEF LEAVES TO JOIN FIRM THAT LOBBIES THE DEPARTMENT: Last month, "the day after J. Steven Griles, former deputy Interior secretary, received a 10-month prison sentence for his involvement in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal," Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne issued a memo detailing his ethics plan for the department. The plan included "more comprehensive training and standards for all department employees, including political appointees." Emphasizing his commitment to ethics reform, Kempthorne noted in the memo that he had created a Conduct Accountability Board headed by Assistant Secretary for Water and Science Mark Limbaugh. But Limbaugh, who is "a distant cousin of radio host Rush Limbaugh," announced two days after the memo was released that he will soon "leave the department for the Ferguson Group, a lobby firm that advocates for several local and state water authorities before Interior." "From my perspective, these are temporary jobs. You have to make a living," Limbaugh said. "When you are in a business like natural resources, you are not going out to work for a tire store." "Limbaugh’s departure comes on the heels of his deputy Jason Peltier’s resignation. Peltier left the department in late June to join the Westlands Water District in California, which has interests before Interior, as its chief deputy general manager." Peltier's departure caught the ire of House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV), who wrote a letter with Rep. George Miller (D-CA) to Kempthorne, saying they were "deeply troubled by the potential impact Mr. Peltier's use of the 'revolving door' will have on the Department's policymaking." Facing similar questions of impropriety, "Limbaugh says he will adhere to federal rules and not lobby his old post during the one-year 'cooling-off' period."

It's called selective emphasis on the little negative and ignoring the great positive.  We need to support each other as Democrats, and if you simply only agree with those who voted against the resolution and reject everything from those who voted for the resolution, you will destroy the party.  It is total ignorance of objectivity - and 20/20 hindsight.

YOU DON'T DISCREDIT A LIFETIME OF GOOD WORK AND GOOD WORK OF THE LAST FOUR YEARS BASED ON ONE RESOLUTION VOTE

The real reason you don't like Biden is that he doesn''t have start quality and is not young and pretty - you insinuated that yourself - by saying he should retire.

Being a Democrat is about more than politics.

We're a group of Americans dedicated to improving our country, both through the choices we make at the ballot box and those we make at home. That's why we're dedicating this year's Democratic Reunion to a challenge we can all tackle together: the fight for a cleaner environment.

This year's Reunion won't be your normal house parties -- we're going to be planting trees, cleaning up local parks and beaches, and kicking off local recycling programs.

Will you host an event on July 28?

http://www.democrats.org/DemocraticReuni...

We're also planting the seeds of something a lot bigger: the field organization we need to take back the White House in 2008.

President Bush, Vice President Cheney and the Republican Congress stood in the way of progress on energy independence and climate change. They've spent years denying the existence of global warming while turning over critical decisions to energy executives.

Jeremy Symons, who represented the Environmental Protection Agency on Vice President Cheney's energy task force, described the Bush administration's "carefully orchestrated policy of delay":

"It's a charade... They have a single-minded determination to do nothing -- while making it look like they are doing something."

Democrats have already taken the lead on conservationism and energy efficiency. I've personally signed and live by former Vice President Gore's Live Earth pledge, and Speaker Pelosi is leading with a legislative agenda in the House focusing on energy independence. In June the Senate passed an energy bill that will save Americans tens of billions of dollars each year, while:

Reducing our dependence on foreign energy sources right away;
Cutting our oil consumption by 7 million barrels a day within 20 years; and
Taking critical steps in the fight against global warming.

The Democratic Party believes we have a moral obligation to lead our country in a new direction, for a cleaner, healthier environment. Now it's up to each of us to do our part.

Will you help the Democratic Party take on one of the greatest challenges of our time?

http://www.democrats.org/DemocraticReuni...

Last summer, tens of thousands of people participated in the first Democratic Reunion to take back Congress in 2006. That's the idea behind the 50-State Strategy -- that no matter where you live, you can make a difference.

But the Democratic Party and the 50-State Strategy can be more than a driving force at the voting booth. By working together in towns across the country, we can fight for Democratic principles like energy independence -- while building our organization for future elections.

This summer, let's work on making our towns greener places to live -- it's a good start to cleaning up the Republican mess in Washington.

Roll up your sleeves on Saturday, July 28 for a stronger Democratic Party and a cleaner America:

http://www.democrats.org/DemocraticReuni...

Thanks for your leadership,

Gov. Howard Dean, M.D.

It is total ignorance of objectivity

I would say that ignoring the record is anything but objective.

and 20/20 hindsight.

Most of us here knew Bush was lying and that invading Iraq was wrong. So we can't be accused of hindsight now when we were in fact engaging in foresight then.
